I can't help but sense a bit of "she's making us normal brides look bad" tone from the author.

Not only does she obviously have issues--but what's his story? Egads...how could anything ever be quasi "normal"?? She's a time bomb who will ultimately need medical intervention...I hope they can afford it.....

Sorry, but anyone who is defending her doesn't know the whole story.

C'mon. It's not just expectations for brides vs. grooms, it's expectations for women vs. men.

This woman needs help. Anyone who eats 30,000 calories a day has an eating disorder. People are always up in arms about anorexia, making comments like "they are killing themselves" or "starving themselves to death." This is just as bad as anorexia, but some people want to treat as a normal lifestyle and say if she's happy with herself then everything is fine. Well it's not. If Eman were an anorexic, people would be saying, "Eat something you are killing yourself." They wouldn't be cheerleading her telling her to "just be yourself and keep starving yourself if it makes you happy". Eman is eating herself to death and making it into a contest no less. She needs an intervention not encouragement to keep repeating the same unhealthy behavior.

The bride invites that sort of coverage with her stated desire to be the "largest woman." She is not being victimized, she is a willing participant.

I feel sorry for this girl, because wanting to be the move overweight person on the planet is obviously not a physically or mentally healthy desire. But- if she has found someone to love, who loves her and wants to share her life, she deserves to be as happy as any other bride on her wedding day. I hope that the 'freak-show' attention isn't PART of her happiness or what she has sought out, but in these reality show days, maybe she just feels that any attention is good attention, even if it is mocking her. Too bad if she buys into that- I hope she has a good wedding and that a happy marriage will show her that she doesn't need to pursue some crazy record weight to find happiness in life.

Any person (man or woman) who desires to be the largest person in the world is suffering from some kind of mental disorder. Their morbid obesity will certainly result in a premature death.

However, what I really have to question is the people that enable this kind of behavior. Who is cooking for/feeding these people? A diet of 30,000 calories daily? Sweet Jeebus! And people who supposedly love and care for this person are enabling and assisting her? When she dies, can they all be indicted for "conspiracy to commit murder"? Who is paying for all that food and supporting this woman as she eats herself to death?

For all of you people who rave that "I love that she doesn't care what society thinks of her!"—I hope you're founding and supporting a charity to indulge this woman. That way, the rest of (rational) society won't have to support her deranged and reckless behavior.

Who pays? The men who pay to watch her stuff her face on her website and the State of Arizona.

Who shops? Her two young sons each push an overloaded shopping cart while she rides along giving orders.

Outrageous.

she's a selfish, foolish, attention seeker, wasting her life on something that is meaningless. "So how did your life count for something?" "i purposely became the fattest woman, while fashioning my wedding dress from a tent awning."

450, maybe. she certainly does not weigh 800 pounds.

Having heard of her before, my first thought was where does she get the money to pay for all of her food and a custom wedding dress?

The author misses the obvious - Uribe was trying to lose weight while Eman is intentionally gaining weight trying to become the heaviest woman in the world. You can't complain that someone is treated like a sideshow when she seeks to be a sideshow.

Unless you are a feminist writer...in which case it's your job to feel victimized or claim victimization for all women EVEN...or sadly, ESPECIALLY when it's their own responsibility.

Well, one big difference between the two compared is that Uribe is trying to lose weight, whereas Eman is trying to gain it. She is trying to make herself into a freak and he's trying to become healthy, so I think she's doing it to herself. If she didn't want the attention, she wouldn't let these companies have access to her life.

I'm not sure I completely agree with everything in the article here...especially the comparisons between this young lady and the former "fattest man." As I recall, there were numerous news stories, documentaries that were pretty salacious and sensational for a few years. People seemed to amazed he'd found someone who loved him and wanted to marry him. With the exception of her appearance on shows like Inside Edition, I haven't seen her story covered as extensively. IE seems to treat everybody - celebrity or not like a circus freak - that is their style. That is also why I don't watch their show.

I'll say this once and won't belabor the point. Ever since the 1960s and the twiggy era - when JFK started his initiative on American physical fitness we've gotten fatter and fatter. The continuous focus on diet and exercise, the pressure to be thin is leading to eating disorders, and increased obesity as we destroy our metabolisms while at the same time spend more and more time in front of our computers, TVs with 1800 channels, and game consoles. What makes this story "freakish" is that this woman is happy with herself. Regardless of size, color, social status - how often do we ever hear of a woman satisfied with her appearance - we have created no social construct where that seems to be acceptable - and in the case of an obese woman - well she'd just have to be looney right?

I agre with you. Manual Uribe's coverage was equally salacious.

Do you not believe that the fact that she's actively seeking further weight gain and seeming to court the attention of numerous media outlets might be signs that she could have some serious issues she's dealing with? That is, do you believe she really IS happy? I have seen patients who're at what are normal weights for them, those whose happy normal is higher than average by, oh, up to 65 pounds or so. But I've never yet met one of these supermorbids who is not contending with a history of trauma, terrible depression, and real hopelessness. I agree that yo-yo dieting is what has set them--and now a full third of our population--on this path. But I also know that healthy, truly happy people don't pursue the binge-eating version of self-mutilation to this degree.

but she is happy with her situation. the man was not. she is drawing attention to herself and gaining weight. she enjoys it. he was miserable and wanted to be healthier. thats why he was treated with more respect. he was struggling to change. she is good where she is and is reveling in it. at least she is her own person and doesnt care what the rest of the world thinks. too bad she wont get to be a rebel for too long though. there is no way she can live at that size for much longer. i also think that if she were getting the worlds biggest wetsuit, people would be just as fascinated.
