The NY Times ran a poll on how people feel about the president's announcement and how it is likely to affect their vote in November.

So far, the reaction has been overwhelmingly positive.

He doesn't need to excite people who read the NYTs. They'll vote for him anyway.

We became a country in the first place to pursue the right to believe things in our own way. Sexual orientation and religion are matters of the heart and soul and no one no matter how powerful should ever dictate those things to us. We have the freedom to chose, and the intellect to be respectful of other's choices. Who you love and what you believe are the warzone of the narrow minded. I can't understand why anyone still worries about whats going on in other peoples minds. Let's assume we all studied the american revolution in third grade, and focus on crime or poverty instead. We should all stop irritating each other with petty things and try to improve ourselves.

You have a great way with words. I am personally against gay marriage because of my beliefs. Which is christianity. But your words made me see things from what if it was my religion people refused my right to have. How would I feel about that. I would be outraged. I believe to each their own as well but maybe with refusing to allow my self to see it as a right people have to live their life I was closeminded in my thoughts. You have given me alot to think about. Many people try to push things down peoples throats which causes resistance. You however to me have made it a little clearer by opening my mind to what if it was you.

Well duh, Hollywood supports all the things the libs and lefties want. Obama probably evolved into the support so he could go to George Clooney's fundraiser for his campaign. LOL

I have no issues with gay marriage but, the fact that the President decided to support gay marriage then say it's a state issue is ridiculous. Why then is the Arizona immigration law or states that want to have ID's at the ready when people vote a fed issue and not this? If re elected we will see if he really does believe in gay marriage and make it a federal issue or it was just a tool to collect votes. It's funny that the federal govt feels that it's a civil rights violation to question or deport someone who shouldn't be here in the first place but, for the citizens of this country gay marriage is a matter for the states.
11:11 AM on 05/10/2012
Ummm it IS a state issue. Read your constitution again, it delegates powers to the federal government, then says everything else essentially, is the responsibility of the state. Obviously, we don't do that these days because Americans are ignorant and charge the federal government to solve everything

Not so fast. I think it might well be a civil rights issue, which is Federal territory.

If Obama and Congress tried to get every state to recognize gay marriage by law, a legal challenge would be brought instantly, and Obama and Congress would lose.

...Obama has pleased a lot more than Hollywood celebrities--he's pleased anybody who believes the Constitutional language that we ALL are created equal, and that equal rights are not just for the few who can scream the loudest or have the most cash to buy attack ads. The implications of this historic stance are going to be felt for many years.

There will be alot happening in the next few months that will make Obama look like a hero and the good guy. Luckily alot of people leaving comments are intelligent and can see that this is just a political ploy to get him re-elected. Let's look at his track record and what he stands by and done for this country that is what we need to base our decisions off of not what he is saying now that he is campaiging. His charm is what got him into the office in the first place people please remember that. I have been saying this over the next few months there will be more that happens that shines light on Obama making him look good. Don't be a puppet and fall for fancy tricks, he will say what he needs to to be re-elected and that's the bottom line.

I believe the fast moves towards ensuring the Civil Rights of African Americans and the War on Poverty by LBJ and Congress were used to distract from the war crimes of Vietnam and the assassination of JFK.

Gay rights are important, but, please, don't let this be used to distract from other injustices, like the civil war in Central Africa instigated by foreign powers that keeps the people from organizing the raising of the prices of the rare earth elements we need for every computer and cellphone we use and whose atrocities rival those of WW2.

Do not let this victory allow us to forget that Eisenhower was right about whom to "beware", that we were lied to for the reasons for two wars that have caused untold destruction and misery for so many.

So, enjoy this victory, but use it to make the place better for others and not just for yourself. Many people have sacrificed themselves who are not gay so that progress could be made for gays. It is only fitting not to forget your own past struggles by helping others who at this time need the help that your group once needed.

When celebrating victory, remember that nobody is safe unless we make sure to protect the rights of all people and the earth all over this world.

"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." MLK

Please. He has been the most progressive president in history on gay rights, and he has been pounded for it endlessly by the right (and lauded of it by the left). This announcement does not impact the constituencies in the least. If you want to study blatant pandering and spineless position dancing, look no further than your candidate, Myth Romney.
