Found something intersting in Japan Times, the reactors that they are so hot to start again, well, there's more back-up then just Oi. Seems somebody is full of it. 1.2 million kilowatts is a hell of a bunch.(morning WMDB)
http://www.japantimes.co.jp/text/fd20120520bj.html
On the other hand, Aera (May 14) suggests that while it won't be easy, Japan can make it through the summer without nuclear power. Even the Kansai area, which faces a serious shortfall, is said to have latent capacity in the form of thermal generators such as two with 1.2 million kW at Misaki-cho, built in 1977, that were shut down in 2005 due to low demand. Another thermal generator in Miyazu City, Kyoto, can produce 750,000 kW. If these are put back on line, they can supply approximately 83 percent of the capacity of the shut down Oi nuclear plant in Fukui.

Shukan Taishu (May 28) shares Aera's view, quoting Shunsuke Funase, an authority on environmental issues, who asserts that if the country practices the same level of conservation that was in effect last summer, things should work out all right.

"Japan has a number of thermal generation plants currently not in use, along with dams that generate pumped-storage hydroelectricity (which operate by pumping water from lower to higher levels during the night, when power demand is low, and then releasing the water to drive turbines during hours of peak power demand).

"Large Crack on South Wall of Fukushima Nuclear Reactor Number Four?" (Photo) May 20, 2012

“We could have a disaster much worse, many times worse than Chernobyl.”

Dr. Michio Kaku on the precarious state of the spent fuel rods in the severely damaged Fukushima nuclear reactor Unit Number Four building

Recently, TEPCO released a petulant press release they plan to inspect the heavily damaged reactor Unit Number Four for signs of tilting. The press release coincided with photos published on the web purportedly showing a large crack running from the foundation to just below the fifth floor of the south wall of the Unit Number Four building where all the spent fuel rods on the site are stored, “open to the elements because a hydrogen explosion blew off the roof during the early days of the accident and sent the building into a list”….

High possibility of Mt. Fuji’s eruption | Fukushima Diary
http://fukushima-diary.com/2012/05/high-...
Professor Emeritus, Kimura from Ryukyu university warns eruption of Mt. Fuji in 3 years is the bigger risk than possible earthquake caused by the active fault.
Like we saw in Dutchsinse's video yesterday, this volcano is belching out ash and smoke which can be seen hundreds of miles away.

1. From North east to South west of the crater, water eruption is observed. This is the water version of eruption instead of magma, but the mechanism is almost the same as normal eruption. In Fujinomiya city beside Mt. Fuji, water has been springing every few months since 2 years ago. Water level became higher all of a sudden at Fujigoko lake located at North to Mt. Fuji.

2. Huge holes appear in the Fuji maneuvering ground of Japanese Self Defense Force. Natural gas is coming up from the holes. The temperature is 40℃ ~ 50℃. It is not the volcanic gas directly coming up from magma but considering water eruption as well, it is highly likely to be the omen of major eruption.

Lamarsh gives an equation:

A(t) = 1.4e6 P (t-0.2 - (t+T)-0.2) ) Ci

where
P is power produced in MegaWatts
T is time in days in the core
t is time in days since removal

To calculate per kilogram, take Mega-Watt days per ton, and divide by about 1000 days active (3 years), then divide by 1000 kg/ton. the result will be P, and T will be 1000.

1 Ci = 3.7e10 Bq

Ok, think car engine, drain radiator. Will it get red and white hot quick, if it didn't seize?
1.5 horse power is about a kilowatt and they are talking mega, if you remove cooling it's going to eventually vaporize.
Then this chart of whats there.

Or just go to the NRC web site. They have tables for specific power from decay heat in BWR fuel.

So the first one isn't going to post?
No matter, Lot of problem if any spent fuel pool has a problem.
Fort Calhoun came really close BEFORE the flood. The pumps were frying and nobody checked out the smell of burning wires to spent fuel pools and now we know a NRC guy (Head of Regional) was going to give the plant a pass because it was too much trouble for him to investigate throughly.
Yeah the sounds way too common (pun intended).

OpEdNews - Article: Is Fukushima's Doomsday Machine About to Blow?
http://www.opednews.com/articles/Is-Fuku...
There is no way to overstate the media's complicity in concealing critical information about the tragedy that is presently unfolding at Fukushima. If there is another earthquake, the media will certainly be every bit as responsible as the government officials who saw the danger, but chose to do nothing.

Call on Secretary General Ban Ki Moon to address this urgent emergency immediately

Low dose ionising radiation IS harmful to health - http://www.independentaustralia.net/2012/life/health/low-dose-ionising-radiation-is-harmful-to-health/
First of all, let me explain why this report is so important and so timely.

It’s now just over a year since the tragic Fukushima disaster. So the nuclear lobby thinks that it’s time to restart the nuclear renaissance, and to get people to stop worrying about ionising radiation.

To this end, the industry, and particularly the U.S. Department of Energy, and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission have projects under way.
Project 1 – weakening emergency safety standards.
The USA’s Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Federal Emergency Management Agency have, in recent times, quietly downgraded nuclear emergency procedures. In particular, the new rules almost entirely ignore the radiation hazard.
Project 2 – discrediting the radiation risk model
The U.S. Department of energy funds research projects worldwide that promote the theories of “radiation hormesis” and “adaptive radiation”.

Radiation hormesis holds that, at a low level, radiation is not only harmless, but actually good for human health.
+++++
Liars! What is more important? The Nuclear Industry and it's profits or HUMAN BEINGS!?!?
SHUT THEM ALL DOWN! STOP SUBSIDIZING THESE K I L L I N G MACHINES!!
09:04 AM on 05/20/2012
Or somebody is planning a war with tactical nukes, or going to target reactors and or processing even with conventional weapons.
Iran and/or North Korea, and not real sure about Pakistan, I don't think they are stupid enough to go after the major powers but they cpould jump in.
And when they strike back at "friendly" nuclear facilities they want everybody to think it's alright, not so bad, we will get over it, could be worse, ect. and so forth.
Most of the old radiation studies were financed by DoD to see how much troops could take and how close they could be to a detonation and still be able to fight, not concerned about women and children or even what happens 5 years later. But I could be wrong and just real cynical.

BIG NEWS, A MUST READ...
SAN ONOFRE’S STEAM GENERATOR FAILURES COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED
snip
The implementing procedures for the 10 CFR 50.59 regulations have eight criteria that are important for nuclear power plant safety. (These eight criteria are provided in Table 1, footnote A below.)

These implementing procedures created for 10 CFR. 50.59 require that the license be amended unless none of these eight criteria are triggered by any change made by Edison at San Onofre. If a single criterion is met, then the regulation requires that the licensee pursue a license amendment process.

By claiming that the steam generator replacements were a like-for-like design and fabrication, Edison avoided the more rigorous license amendment process. From the evidence reviewed, it appears that the NRC accepted Edison’s statement and documents without further independent analysis. In the analysis detailed below, Fairewinds identified 39 separate safety issues that failed to meet the NRC 50.59 criteria. Any one of these 39 separate safety issues should have triggered the license amendment review process by which the NRC would have been notified of the proposed significant design and fabrication changes.

We have issues also at our aging Nuclear Plant in FL also, so much so that the Federal Government just step in. This plant is St. Lucie Nuclear Plant C/O FPL. They are old and coming to there designed life span. One is circa 79 and the other is 83. They just recently renewed there licenses for another 30 plus years and are modifying them to pump out more juice. Even with the manual shut downs that caused the Feds to get involved. They are trying to push these suckers to the limit at the expense of a LARGE population of people and environment between Daytona & Miami! Could you imaging not being able to inhabit that part of Florida anymore! They can and they really don't care!
