An empty box, put into another empty box, and then lowered into the ground... pretty creepy stuff.

Check out Bonnaventure Cemetery in Savannah. I've never gotten the feeling that the cemetery itself was haunted, but some of the burials are pretty eerie. Many of them have objects of all shapes, materials and themes that have been cemented to the stones by practictioners of witchcraft that you see in the South. Child graves are the creepiest where people have cemented pennies on the stones which is supposed to bring them good luck. On my first visit back about nine years ago, I parked near a marker carved as a grand piano, black and gold, that caught my eye. When I looked around to the right of the piano, I saw a stone with my surname (not a common one) that was waiting for its occupant. Creepy.

Bonaventure is indeed pretty creepy, but beautiful at the same time. Colonial Park Cemetery in Savannah is gorgeous. Less creepy.

I totally agree, and love the creepiness of Bonnaventure Cemetary! When taking the tour, you learn of the ghosts that supposedly inhabit the lovely place with the huge trees draped in Spanish moss, and the stories of people who have had encounters. I love the different tombstones and mausoleums there.

Weak. The spookiest cemeteries are in New Orleans, particularly the one on Esplanade and Moss, called St. Louis Cemetary #3

I agree. Above ground cemeteries are more creepy, in part because there are more shadowy hiding places!

Hate to mention this, since it concerns my ancestors.

But there is a cemetery outside of Lancaster, Ohio called Stonewall Cemetery. It is an octagonal structure. The largest non-mortared sandstone structure in the Midwest.

It was built by the Wilson family and allegedly deeded to the President of the United States. (The Clinton WH could find no evidence of such a deed)

It was built without speaking, with the family patriarch reading from the Bible.

It is not spooky, it is beautiful.

A very Scottish,, or make that Celtic structure.

Always wondered if my being related to the Wilsons has anything to do with my overwhelming urge to build standing stone monuments?

I, too, have ancesters buried in Lancaster, Ohio. All of them Methodist-Episcopals from way back. But I gotta tell ya. Lancaster has it's share of strange people.

There is a cemetery in Marysville, CA that has some of the Donner Party buried there. It's flooded there many times and is in such disarray that many of the stones are just laying on the ground, no one knows where they go anymore.

Ya, thats when you take so much LSD that you start speaking in phrases such as "Beauregard, come hyeah boy" and stroking the long gray beard you happen to be hallucinating.

There are many times actually family cemeteries on farmland that go back for generations. I know of one that is now lost in a wooded area of a farm. Now thats spooky to run across on a walk in the woods !

there's a cemetery in des moines called Woodland/Emmanuel Cemetery. it's VERY spooky, even in the day, very hilly, very forested, very windy roads.

there was a murder in there last summer. this schizophrenic had a dream his girlfriend was going to be murdered by an unknown assailant... so in an act of pre-emptive murder, the schizo was walking in the Woodland/Emmanuel Cemetery, came upon a 20 year old guy jogging, chased him down and stabbed him. Because in his dream, the jogger was the unknown assailant.

so come on down to the Woodland/Emmanuel!
