Great work Mr. Jealous!
This is a civil rights issue and always has been.
I remember reading many of what I have read posted on this thread before, white folks tearing it up about how wrong it was to mix the races. It was garbage then, as it is garbage now.
PEACE.

Marriage should be preached and upheld according to instituted by Jesus Christ, to be observed and followed between man and woman, and not between same sex. Thus the rights to equality of marriage in same sex marriage are not what Jesus Christ intended it to be.

Black people, we don't have to agree with every decision Obama makes, you know??? It's like we can't think for ourselves anymore. So afraid others will shun or ridicule us. Real sheep herd mentality. It's funny hearing all these churchy black women go along with this. And any black male who backs this nonsense is either openly gay or closet gay. Blacks in this country will continue to fail. Just give us a HALF BLACK PRESIDENT and we will support him unconditionally regardless of how dysfunctional his views are. All he has to do is look brown and sing Al Green songs at the Apollo. Church folks, what would Jesus say about gays marrying? Seems like we care more about fitting into mainstream culture than morality.

Jesus did say, "love God and love your neighbor".
so let your neighbor love his.
10:20 PM on 05/21/2012
They can love their neighbors without making a mockery of marriage. This all comes down to legal issues. This has nothing to do with love. This is about belongings and property and carrying your lover on your health insurance.

Absurd! You can hide sexual behavior. Two men wearing identical suits, shoes, and have the same hair style, go on an interview. Would the interviewer know which is gay, but he can distinquish them by race, ethnicity. Its a not Civil Right. The right to have relations with whomever is a civil right, but not so that it must be in legislation.
08:21 PM on 05/21/2012
It is hard to know where to begin. Each sentence of that paragraph is patently absurd. Marriage is not about sexual behavior, or clothing, or a job interview. Sexual orientation is not a choice, any more than race or ethnicity. And, marriage absolutely is a civil right. The Supreme Court has said, "Marriage is one of the basic civil rights of man".

"Sexual orientation is not a choice..."

This is your opinion, not a fact.
06:26 PM on 05/21/2012
I suppose that Mr. Jealous has just as much right as anyone to voice his opinion as to the legality of the laws of marriage! But that is always just what it remains, his opinion! But for him to use the auspices of of this historical association, that is outright negligent! I suppose that his next move will be to change the acronym from NAACP to NAALBGT! It is ludicrous, in my opinion, to claim that the thing which is natural, (men and women in cohabitation) is not the ONLY thing that is natural! The force of his tenure has been diminished in the eyes that are watching. Mr. Jealous, in case you didn't know it, your mother and father are male and female. The Gay Agenda is just that, it does not fall under the purview of civil rights.
07:14 PM on 05/21/2012
I agree with you, he needs to be fired from the NAACP, its a game changer alright, and I'm not talking about the crying game change neither.Next, we will support same relationship marriages of our family. ALL OF THIS IS A SIN, PROMOTING SIN ADVOCATES.

This issue is and has always been an attack on the veracity of the Bible. In the eyes of the world, God is being removed. In the eyes of the faithful He is being upheld since the bible speaks of these things. The thief only comes to steal, kill and destroy.
10:18 PM on 05/21/2012
Mr. Jealous did not decide this. He merely announced it. The resolution was passed by the Board of Directors of the NAACP by a margin of 62 to 2. The Board is a very diverse group, representing every part of our nation. Check them out at naacp.org . The resolution speaks to CIVIL marriage as defined and controlled by government, and makes clear that RELIGIOUS marriage remains in the hands of faith communities.
01:29 AM on 05/22/2012
Jealous struggled to speak while recalling how his white father and black mother confronted marriage laws that forced them to marry in Washington, D.C., in 1966 because interracial marriage was illegal in Maryland and his mother's hometown of Baltimore until 1967. Jealous noted that the civil rights organization has opposed laws barring gay marriage in the past. When Mr. Jeaslous made the statement, he cited the example of his white father and black mother, which clearly indicates HIS PERSONAL STANCE on the issue at hand. I understand that the God of heaven instituted marriage and its laws, including marriage being between a man and a woman. The NAACP has no business stepping in and trying to make a statement that is directly opposed to clear biblical teaching.

The Supreme Court has said, in several different cases, that the right to marry the person of ones choice, by mutual consent, is a civil right. In Loving v. Virginia, the Court declared "Marriage is one of the basic civil rights of man".

So, it is not a civil right just because Ben said so. It is a civil right because the Constitution says so, and the Supreme Court has said so in multiple cases.

Bravo for coming out on the right side of this civil rights issue. Hopefully this will trickle down quickly among black churches to open their eyes at their own hypocrosy and embrace/support same sex marriage as a civil right that all American citizens deserve.
07:28 PM on 05/21/2012
Sorry, but it's not a civil right for 2 men to marry each other. Gay men have the right to marriage, but not to another man. Gay marriage does not fall under the umbrella of a "Civil Right"

consider the fact that many verses talking about the tribes of Israel not intermarrying with other cultures was used to justify the ban on interracial marriage.

Marriage rights are NOT civil rights! Homosexual peoples are asking for EXTRA rights! They want the right to marry as male and female and if that doesn't work out male to male and female to female! They already have the right to marry! Just not to whomever or whatever they choose.

You don't have to support someone else having their rights for it to be appropriate for them to have it. That's the point. Civil Rights should NEVER be subject to popular opinion. If they are not convicted felons and American citizens they are ENTITLED to the same rights the rest of us have. My religious beliefs should not dictate how SOMEONE ELSE should live. We Christians have become so arrogant that we think OUR beliefs are the way EVERYONE should be FORCED to live. That not right. Let God be the judge of ALL OF US!

The problem is most black people no longer care about the NAACP. Until you get that message coming from the churches, it is no a representation of what some in the black community think.
06:37 PM on 05/21/2012
How can you say with certainty that "black people no longer care about the NAACP?" Something tells me that if you were Trayvon Martin, their support might be one of the first you sought! As long as there are limitations that fail to advance the causes of the people they serve, there will always be an NAACP and people who care about them!

I will submit that since "minorities" are apparently becoming the "majority," institutions like the NAACP will become less and less relevant in relation to their "current business model" or focus. Jumping on the "gay bandwagon" is likely the result that such outcome.
08:31 PM on 05/21/2012
There will always be hateful people in the world. We cannot change their minds by force, or by law. We can ask them to think. Most pastors are educated people, and are capable of thinking.

The question that every pastor of every church must ask him or her self is, "How should this church minister to those people?"

As soon as any pastor asks that question, they stop condemning and start ministering, because the only right answers are pretty obvious. All of the right answers to that question begin with "This church should".
