There's something scarier than witches in those woods - Christians.  In this context, "Paddle faster, I hear banjos," isn't funny.

For those of you who don't get it, imagine that just because you are who you are, a bunch of people decide to beat you within an inch of your life and or sexually assault you or kill you just because they don't like you or "your type". You manage to survive (after a lengthy hospital stay and some reconstructive surgery) and although you have spoken to the police and they have found the people who assaulted you, they are let go or get off at trial. Do you think that's okay? What if it were your little brother or sister? Or your favorite uncle or aunt? etc..Or what if it were you because you were wearing the wrong shirt and someone identified that shirt with being gay?

This case may be difficult to prove as a hate crime, but others are easier. Bigots usually make explicit manifestations of their feelings towards certain groups.

At best, the existence of hate laws will maximize penalties for violent offenses; at worst, it is a symbolic law whose very presence in our judicial system will remind us that discrimination is any form is unacceptable.

That having been said, at the end of the day, there is always Karma. Prison is a good place for it to come back at someone who hates homosexuals.

As ever, I am grateful to have been born in a big city. For me, Middle America is what´s "down there below" when the plane flies over.

They do in a lot of places now. Gay Pride Days are usually fun for families, too. People should attend and take their kids.
I´m sure that I´ll get slammed by someone for saying that but PEOPLE SHOULD ATTEND AND TAKE THEIR KIDS.

That county has no bars and 116 churches... and it's incredibly poor, riddled with drug use, and hosts this kind of hatred and violence. Best of luck to Pennington and federal prosecutors. Thanks to Lila Shapiro for an excellent, detailed article.

You know why gay people don't go around beating up people for being strait? Because they don't care who you are with
Wwhy are some people so preoccupied with what other people do in bed?

More right wing redneck whining.  Pathetic and disgusting.  Let's see, the last time black folks lynched a white guy was.....never.

If they are beaten because they are white or straight, then it IS a hate crime. Though, last I checked, gay people weren't maiming and killing a lot of straight people.

I can't justify a law that puts the value of one life above that of another. This law in itself is prejudicial...

Then I assume that you do not support any of the archaic anti abortion laws that are being discussed which put the life of a nonviable being above that of the woman who is hosting it?

Is my micro bio winking at my "But..."?

"...to carve out a safe space for gay citizens by outlawing homophobic violence."

Impossible, of course, and tragic because so much of the hate comes from the very ones who have brought them into the world (family, incl parents), been charged with tending to their spiritual selves (religious idiots), and who are sworn to serve and protect them (authority figures of all stripes).

But, when one is decidedly, proudly, righteously and courageously choosing to live honestly and freely, one should use special caution when living in hostile lands...just sayin'.

The animals in this case should be prevented from breeding, seriously.

Mercy on us all.

Wide in scope & context - in conflict & pressures, the dynamics here are way beyond intense, yet no matter how the dynamics push on each other, the human being in the center of this story is the center of his own life - & there's been grievous harm done.

Minority or not, gendered or not, sexualized or not, no individual should have to endure what has taken place there. It cannot be minimized by any 'perception' frame - of any angle. Federal action, indeed. There probably should be laws of this type for a few other kinds of 'situations,' as well.

Indeed, indeed. Thanks for the reply, & the encouragement. I decided against a few other words, multitude among them!, in order to keep my statement a little more neutral vs. inflaming...THIS Is a tough moment/happening/incident/event, w/ MUCH that could be said of it. None of it being (+) reflection on us, or Harlan Co.

Hate is an emotion that flourishes in the U.S. and is a direct result of some religious cults and the Republican Party who want to keep these cults in their base. When you hear some of the comments made on Fox and from people like Limbaugh it pretty much defines what America is all about.

For a second there I was really shocked. I thought it said violence WASN'T occurring in Kentucky. Honestly people. it doesn't matter if you are gay straight woman man black or white, you got the short end of the stick if God dropped you off in Kentucky.
12:36 AM on 05/24/2012
West Virginia and Eastern Kentucky are as bigoted as any place could be. I was born and raised in that area but left in early adulthood. Although I miss it, I know as a gay man I could never live there.
