All respects Mr Lear, but denying flame retardant's affecting public health is not the only safety concern that was initially denied but eventually proven true and addressed belatedly. Think safety belts in autos, food additives, pesticides, hazard of smoking tobacco, , climate warming the list goes on. Corporations have hired scientists to back up their denials but in the long run, truth and statistics win the day.

To quote two lines from a comedy-play I once read;

K: When Ronald Reagan said "Let business be business" more clueless words were never spoken.

B: Charles Dickens had a few words to say on that subject as well.

NIcholas Kristof is absolutely right about the dangers of toxic flame retardants in carpets, bedding, household goods. These flame retardants are toxic and bio-accumulative. The flame retardants are making children and pets sick and in some cases killing them.

Mr. Lear is clueless, he has NO background whatsoever in chemistry or biochemistry and is clueless how halogenated chemicals and the chlorines and bromines in flame retardants affect biological tissue.

In urging that business sue anyone who shows the dangers of corporate chemicals, Mr. Lear is urging the abrogation of the First Amendment, wanting Americans to shut their mouths and silence their voices instead of speaking up against poisons and injustices. Mr. Lear would take away from Americans the right to speak out against corporate poisoning of our children and our world, and lock up the scientists.

Big business is not nice, it is destroying the planet with its toxins and bioengineered Frankenfoods. Personally, I am disgusted that HuffPo would even print this unAmerican opinion piece.

Do not listen to right wingers like Lear. Instead, educate yourself, listen to what the scientists say, the Union of Concerned Scientists and the Green Science Policy Institute.

Read what some biochemists have found about the harmfulness of flame retardants to human health: Check it out: http://www.greensciencepolicy.org/

Ahem! Norman Lear is throwing out the glove, so to speak, to the polluters and the toxic chemical industry to bring a suit that would require a thorough investigation of the testing and safety of their products.

Well somebody should definitely be sueing somebody, especially if it makes the truth come out, but unfortunately it doesn't always work that way, since most lawyers seem to be little more than professional liars.

A CLICKING IN THE AIR - CT Whistleblower's Story

Business is fighting back--by intimidation, cover-ups, collusion, threats, bribery...and as I have encountered in my investigative journalism on interrelated crime and corruption in the public and private sectors of the Connecticut legal system, bribery of judges, false statements, defamation in the guise of investigation, false arrests, illegal wiretaps and other surveillance, working with sympathetic individuals in state security agencies and in the political system, programs of incrimination, and hiring rent-a-thugs.

Everyone knows that the free market magically imparts ethics and morals to the business world and that those people maimed or killed in an unregulated market are willing sacrifices on the altar of freedom so that business can free of that same regulation.
02:42 PM on 05/22/2012
I wholeheartedly agree! Since we know the Obama administration will not go after Kristof and the Chicago Tribune for these slanderous attacks on reputable businesses, these corporations should take on their defense, especially since it was a government agency and Congress acting to protect children, not their profits. A good offense is a good defense.

You make me sad.

The gullible Righties never get that they're being had. That's why this country is in the trouble it is. Big business has been "having" them for some time now. At the expense of the rest of us.
