Instead of running these loans through banks looking to make a profit, wouldn't it make a lot more sense for the government to return to the policies of past years and provided low interest loans themselves? Exactly, what value do the banks add to the process?
08:30 PM on 05/24/2012
Banks were removed from the path by a provision in the ACA (also known as Obamacare).

Prior to 2010, federal loans were also divided between direct loans--originated and funded by the federal government--and guaranteed loans, originated and held by private lenders but guaranteed by the government. The guaranteed lending program was eliminated in 2010 because of a widespread perception that the government guarantees boosted student lending companies' profits but did not benefit students by reducing student loan costs.

The Federal Direct Loans (Stafford Direct loans) however have aggregate limits of $57.5K for undergrads and $138.5K for grads.

that is already taken place, BUT what is happening is the interest rates were dropped for a specific time and that time is about to run out. The GOP wants to sit back and watch the interest rates triple on these loans. We, as a nation, work better when we have highly qualified people available for Businesses to chose from.

Why don't the Democrats start calling this a GOP "tax hike on future job creators"? You have to use the language they and their slavish followers understand. Because this IS a tax hike on future job creators, as much as any tax hike on job creators the GOP has ever denounced. Simple linguistics folks.

Every worker pays a Medicare tax of 1.45% on every dollar of income. A relatively small group of self-employed business owners use an accounting procedure under which they pay themselves a minimal salary out of their business income and declare the rest of their income to be "profit". They pay Medicare tax only on the salary portion of the income and do not pay any Medicare tax on the profit portion. The Democratic proposal is to revise the accounting procedure so that these persons will pay Medicare tax on their entire income, just like everyone who works for them.

Once again the filibuster is abused and the minority rules. What a sad state of affairs.
07:39 PM on 05/24/2012
I thought I heard the ones on the right that even signed a oath to a man not the country to never raise taxes. That said if you raise what a student pays on interest from 3.4% to 6.8% Is that an increase? They can cut the riches taxes and want to cut more but the middle class and the poor don't count.
07:31 PM on 05/24/2012
These are direct federal loans administered by the Department of Education that is borrowed by the Federal reserve on which they a currently paying 1.8%.So for those Senators who say that having it reflect the cost maybe they should undestand what the cost is.You can now get a fixed rate mortgage for thirty years at about 4%.These clowns need to get their stories straight and fix this problem. The clown procession is in full parade mode.Say anything and do anything to protect the tax advantages your donors receive at the expense of those that wish to help themselves to a better life adding value to our country.

It is ridiculous that these loans are not kept at a low rate considering a 15 year fixed mortgage is 3.12%.

The real crime here though is tuition costs.
In 1999-2000 The University of Colorado In-State tuition & fees were $3118 (under grad)
2012-2013 tuition & fees will be $9482 (under grad)

I realize tuition is a state issue, but states need to start investing in higher education more than just enough for naming rights of the university.

You know all of those schools have to have their very expensive Sports Programs and insure that the Head of the Schools get a very large salary and bonus package, THEN they turn around and get MILLIONS every single year from Tax Payer Funded grants to build buildings that have no benefit to the local community or local Tax Payers. These schools need to stop putting their hands out for Tax Payer Grants and hit up their Alumni to help pay for new buildings and their premium sports programs.

Only in America where a 51 to 43 vote isn't a majority win.

Anybody wonder why this country can't move forward with any progress to fix its ills? It's called the 24/7/365 day Republican Filibuster courtesy of "King Mitch"

Vote every Tea Bag/Republican out of office and let's get this country back into the hands of the adults. No more immature Tea Bag/Republican "Party Before People" rank amateur stupidity.

In every other Senate in history, the Democratic sponsored measure would have passed with a majority vote.  Only in today's bizzaro world of lazy journalism and absolute GOP intransigence could their filibuster be reported as the majority rejecting the Democratic bill.

Why don't the students give up their daily latte? That would pay for the small increase. Just another liberal bail out. This is why we are in debt.

I know if you get a loan you pay it back, even if the interest rate goes up. It is their debt.

That's okay. If Mittsy comes into office who will be heading to college anyhow. If your momma and dadda can't loan you the 50 large to go and if you can't even afford to shop around for the right priced school -- the Acme School- is you will, then you don't count any longer. Only the uber rich, can go to the TOP schools. Us lessers, no matter how smart will be applying at College of Podunk and rooting for the mascot -- The Podunk Skunk.

What mass employer like Google or other Fortune 500 company will be doing major recruiting at the Podunk Skunk School?

Yeah -- Mittsy --- I thought so.

As obscene as it is to cut healthcare coverage, it is patently bizarre to raise FICA taxes - which pay for Social Security, Medicare, etc., to offset the cost of keeping the interest rates low.

"Democrats proposed raising Social Security and Medicare payroll taxes on HIGH-EARNING owners of some privately held companies and professional practices"

This would close another loophole for the rich, not put an additional burden on middle-class taxpayers and small business owners. The Democrats proposed closing a tax loophole for Subchapter S corporations.

Here is a different explanation of it:

Try giving it to the Filibuster Tea Bag/Republicans first. Tings will get done right after that.
