"What could Romney's handlers be thinking when they hyped his connection with Donald Trump -- fundraising with Trump, offering supporters the possibility of a meal with Trump, relishing Trump's attention and endorsement"

You kind of ignored the same type of fundraising with former NJ Governor and MF Global crook Jon Corzine when it came to Obama.

At that point Corzine was just an ex Goldman Sachs CEO and governor... the universe hadn't yet crashed and the facts weren't yet known. It wouldn't happen with Corzine today. On the other hand we know all that is wrong with Trump, his bankruptcies, his serial polygamy, his hubris and his self-adoration. Why Romney gets near him has only one explanation: $$$$

What Clinton gave this country, and Reich refuses to admit, is a start down the path that led to the Great Recession. Glass/Steagall was repealed on Clinton's watch and the push to make homes ownership available to even those who couldn't really afford it was started on Clinton's watch.

The above shouldn't be construed as an endorsement of Romney or Trump.

Don't blame ME. I voted against the Multinationals

Absolutely. It just took 10 more years of Bush temporary Tax cuts for the wealthy, and further deregulation to bring the world economy crashing down.
While your at it be sure and blame Carter for our addiction to fossil fuels.

Romney and Trump were both born rich, that's the important similarity.
They are hereditary rich, not self-made. The US is a plutocracy, not a meritocracy.

The US has begun to give capitalism a very bad name by reconfiguring our economic system to be corrupt crony capitalism.

Amen - time for a 100% estate tax with 100% of the collections passed to the graduating high school class of the next year to give them a start in life.

It isn't how much money a person makes; it's HOW that money is made.

To often when Mitt Romney ran Bain Capital, money was made the WRONG way.

Here's the way Romney's Bain did it:.

"Romney’s Bain would buy a company and increase its short-term earnings through firing workers and shuttering plants in order to borrow enormous amounts of money.

"The borrowed money was used to pay Bain dividends; however and those businesses needed to maintain a high level of earnings to pay their debts. When they couldn’t, that meant plant closures, more layoffs, bankruptcies, and in many cases, the end of the business.

"And there's more. The bankruptcies still meant huge profits for Bain’s investors. Furthermore, Bain continued to collect management fees even as companies failed."

Money made the WRONG way.

And a cruel, heartless way. Workers lost their jobs, their life savings, and their pensions. Many were older workers with no clear prospects of further employment.

It's unforgivable.

And it's the HUMAN COST of Romney's Bain Capital that is the point.

Our nation DOES NOT need as its President an individual like Mitt Romney who made money the WRONG way.

Think about it.
What goes around, comes around.

Little late on that idea Rob, I called for the Romney-Trump ticket months ago. There should be a Romney draft Trump movement.

Didn't you all just love Romney's justification: I don't always agree w/ people, but I need their money/ delegates.

It is a shame that things have been allowed by us, the people of these United States to spiral downward to the depth we find ourselves today. Our love and worship of money and all it has bought is finally showing its underside in the persons of the current crops of political candidates and what they intend to do for those for and against them. So many of us complain bitterly about the"handwriting on the wall" but so many others are fast asleep at the switch; don't care, unaware of the pending consequences or a feeling of helplessness. A large unammaginable consequences for our failure to standup and do the right thing in so many instances is fast approaching and we are all to blame. Most of us do not consider that crime is rampant everywhere, deception is being revealed in every strata of societ like never before. The gluttony of wall street barrons and their sins of greed is ever being exposed and no one is making anyone accountable. The love of money andthe worship of them and the lack of any sort of morality is rampant.
Just you watch and remember who warned that this day of reckoning is even at the door. Remember I told you and your readers. Its no longer a political race based on respectful and dignified competition, but of HATE, HATE,,and more hate. Win at all cost.

These two are a joke, but don't take anything for granted. Any democrat who feels overconfident about Romney losing his bid should remember 2000. A lot of strange things happened then.

Rounding out the cabinet:

SecDef, Sarah Palin because she can see Russia from her property in Alaska.
SecState, Herman Cain (though he'd probably prefer Ambassador to Beki-beki-beki-Stan)
SecCommerce, Newt Gingrich because he's gonna need to pay off those primary debts.
SecEducation, Michelle Bachmann who can appoint her husband to "fix the gays"
Rick Perry...knows he wants a Cabinet position, but can't remember the name of the agency.

Rick Perry could only be Secretary of the Interior! He could televise executions, maybe Rupert Murdoch could help with that.

If Rick Perry were to be Sec'y. of Interior, he has no control over what is televised, yet. FCC has that under it's thumb. As for televising executions - it will never happen. FCC has a penalty that can cost you several thousand dollars AND a long time in the slammer

Mr. Reich, you echo my 'sentiments' from yesterday. Thanks. I called it the 'Dream Ticket Extraordinaire.' Because it WOULD be. For the 1/2 - 1%r's. And for the Obama team, too. They'd be in a 'battle' of wits with unarmed opponents; Mr. Romney's 'Amercia' team could hope Mr. Trump's 'fan base' would swing millions of votes. (I only half-jest, there...but still, I jest with that last part.)

Besides all the reasons you mentioned, there's also the fact that there are NO bars too low for the GOTP to stoop to. I also wouldn't put anything past them. With Grover Norquist and Karl Rove holding reigns; with Mr. McConnell & Mr. Boehner being held hostage by the Tea Party; with the intractable uncohesive cohesion of their own numbers, it'd be the perfect rabble-rousing 'event' for them. And would serve their purposes admirably. (And The Don would be happy just to sit at the same table and consider his considerations important, most likely.)

My conclusion included disaster...a social conflict that could/would rival most. Including most of our current, semi-current, and historical examples. But perhaps that's the purpose: to give a big, grand, ole "You're fired!!" to the last, hardly-breathing, wisp of democracy left in this country. Once again, sir, you are correct!
