America needs to seriously take a look at legalizing marijuana, mostly because the one big reason that it is illegal is all because Hearst didn't want hemp to compete against his lumber company. The Rockerfeller laws need to be repealed as well, all they do is lock away people who would benefit more from receiving help for their problems, than sending them to prison to learn worse habits ( of course there are some people who should do time, but a majority of the people in on these laws would benefit from rehab). There are real medical uses for marijuana, and it does less damage to a body than alcohol or cigarettes.

The biggest reason they outlawed marijuana was because they accused black men of raping white women because of being under the influence of the plant. The history channel told me that so take it for what it's worth! lol

That was the propaganda they used, not the real reason. Hearst, DuPont, and Anslinger had a meeting and they all had their own reasons for wanting it illegal. Hearst because he had a paper mill and a lot of money invested in using trees for paper not hemp. DuPont was about to make a killing off of petrochemicals and didn't want competition. Anslinger was gonna be out of work with prohibition of alcohol ending so he needed a new prohibition.

The “Stop and Frisk” law is an anti-minority law.

When you're a cop you go where the crime is and most of the
crime is in minority areas.

Yeah, it's not like white people sell, smoke or possess marijuana. If NYC justice held them accountable for anything, we'd know for sure.

Do some reading on how policing really works in minority areas. The Village Voice had a great series drawing on secretly recorded tapes made by a policeman in Bed-stuy: cops are judged by the number of arrests they make(strangely enough, the system only requires a lot of arrests in minority areas), creating a system where people are arrested for talking on their stoops, chatting with friends on the sidewalk, throwing out their garbage, waiting out the rain under an awning, etc. to juke the officers' stats. On the other hand, the system highly discourages the reporting of arrests in high-crime areas so the police refuse to take reports(or give would-be reporters the run-around in the hope that they'll give up out of frustration) and if they do, they'll often wrongly classify it as a misdemeanor to keep the statistics looking good. The end result is that innocent black folk are much more likely to be arrested (and forced to plead guilty) for non-crimes like being near a policeman when his quotas are due, they are more likely to be harassed by police and they're far less likely to ever see justice.

Interesting comparison.

Cuomo seeks to decrease marijuana arrests.

Obama, despite being an admitted marijuana and cocaine user, and despite his solemn campaign promise not to, instructed his DoJ to crack down on legal medical marijuana dispensaries (increasing the number of marijuana arrests from the Bush administration).

Every president over the last 20 years fall into that category. As a president it's not beneficial politcally to be honest on this issue and we know everything is about politics and money!

Why?

Just legalize marijuana already and stop interrupting NYS citizens lives. The ONLY reason the NYPD has the numbers of arrest from the racist Stop&Frisk policy is because they force those they stop to empty their pockets, something they aren't allowed to do . If the person has any marijuana they are arrested and "put through the system" to check for outstanding warrants. What's interesting is that the arresting officer can give the person a DAT (desk appearance ticket) as opposed to arresting them. The NYPD give DAT'S to White suspects they find marijuana on more than Blacks &Latinos who they arrest more than Whites for the same amount of marijuana.

It won't help. If Cuomo wants to help, he should ensure Bloomberg and Kelly stop violating 4th Amendment rights of US citizens. AND, expunge the record of every individual who was targeted and entrapped by the NYPD.
