Her son's sexuality should not have been made public by this

Good "church lady" is a paradox.  Voting against and fighting against your childrens rights makes you a bad "church lady".  I have no respect for people who put religion ahead of humanity.

The reason her family should not be included, is she is neither voting her conscience, nor her demonstrated choices, but simply catering to the right wing extremists who now rule the Republican party. I believe the official term is "Hypocrite"

These 'holier than thou' elected by the People officials are Selective on who should be entitled to 'the equal protection of the law'. 'Equal' apparently doesn't apply to everyone.

I think the post about elderly parents needing their adult children later in life is the bottom line. When Marsha Looper is demented and can't feed herself her son will stick her in a nursing home never to see her again. I hope she's got the conjones to handle that end of the deal!

What a sad, sad story this is for me. We have all read the stories of public harassment, bullying and the recent suicides of young gay people. Growing up gay in our country is difficult. As a gay man I know how truly difficult it can be.

When I was young, the psychiatric community said gay people were psychologically ill and maladjusted. Fundamentalist Christian, Jewish and Islamic religions told me I was sinful and since I was raised Catholic, I was taught I would burn in Hell for eternity.

So when the time came to tell my single mother that I was gay, I was scared to death ... afraid she would reject me and not accept me for who I was. But she was wonderful and supportive and said that the world would be a better place if people would stop labeling others. She showed me nothing but love. And that was so important to me because I felt she was the last one on earth I could turn to for support.

And what makes this story so heartbreaking for me is that this son's mother may be the only one he can turn to for love and support and she chose to let him know how she feels about him, his future life and his happiness by her vote. I can only hope he has someone in his life who accepts him for who he is and gives him all the support and love that he deserves.

Great post. I have a sister who is gay, and even lives with her gf. My parents have never really aknowledged it, however, even if they are both still very fond of my sister and polite to her gf.

I know that my mom at least, who is Catholic, is not in favor of marriage equality and it greatly disapoints me that my parents, who are wonderful and supportive in every other way, can't seem to expand their horizons a little further for the sake of my sister. I think that they probably expect my sister to "grow out of" being gay, like it's some phase for her.

Hopefully, they'll adjust in time. And if they don't...well, thank God neither of them has any power in politics beyond being able to vote.

I am sickened at the Homophobia and Hate Agenda pushed by the GOP/Right/Tea Party bigots.
If you can truely vote against equality for a group of people that includes your own child, then all this talk of preserving traditional marriage and family is nothing but lip service to the extreme right in the GOP to attain votes. If there is a God, He/She/It would no doubt be furious with the hypocrisy displayed in the GOP Platform. Any laws that are passed or defeated in an effort to take away the rights of any gorup of citizens is UNCONSTITUTIONAL as each would go in the face of the 14th Amendement that ensures "Section 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws".

I do love the bait and switch they oppose marriage for gays that would be wrong why can't they just call it a civil union but then again I will vote against civil unions as well.
