Pardon me, but aren't we in the middle of having a HUGE debate regarding foreclosures and who does and does not own mortgaged homes?

If the bank owns the property, shouldn't they pay the tax, not the mortgage holder? And if they don't pay the taxes and don't own the home, can they really legally kick people out of mortgaged homes? And if they do own the homes, giving them the  right to  Read More...

"Homeowners" may be happy, but the ones who are the happiest are the corporations who pay substantial property taxes. Eliminating property taxes will deprive communities and schools of vital revenues. Sales tax rates could skyrocket, putting the biggest burden on the poor.

The Property Tax one of the least regressive taxes. Those who own more property pay more. It is their contribution to the community, because property taxes are the financial basis for collective community services such as police, fire, road maintenance, and other services. Eliminating the property tax is a corporation's dream come true. They can build and demand community services and not contribute a dime to their upkeep. It is the ultimate theft, the ultimate way to disconnect the company emotionally and financially from the physical location it is in.

Why then is the Chamber of Commerce opposing the bill? Sales taxes are fair taxes. The more stuff made in china you buy the more tax you pay. Why should I pay a tax on my HOME and you shouldn't have to pay tax on your IPAD?

Because the quality of life in the place where you live is largely determined by things you cannot directly control; quality of schools, roads and other infrastructure, crime rates, stuff that is directly influenced by the quality of the government services property tax covers. And THAT directly influences the value (price) of your property.

But I do understand your point about the iPad. What is regressive about sales tax is the fact that poor people pay a MUCH larger portion of their income to it, mostly on survival items like transportation and food, than the wealthy do.

For years N. Dakota had the least population for its size of any state, and nobody wanted to move there. Now these people have a real bonanza with oil revenues boosting their economy out of sight. Question: is any Canadian crude oil coming into the state to be refined?

"Opponents argue that foregoing the $800 million per year generated by the property tax could strain local government budgets."

Labor unions and politicians oppose - gee, I wonder why?

These referendums need to be conducted nation-wide. If you want to stop the onslaught of big government - starve it into submitting to the will of the people. Keep feeding it and it will consume all of us.

Yeah, how dare they have an interest in making sure civil services are funded. All those firefighters are really destroying America with their big government ideals.

I love it - the left always brings up services - firefighters. police, teachers.

How about planning and zoning offices staffed at 2006 levels and not a house permit one applied for in years. Should I go on?

Hmmm, the rich (property owners vs. non-property owners) want to do away with their taxes. Did they ever consider that reducing a sales tax would impact everyone, or an income tax would impact most people, misght be a fairer way to go.

I am glad to see that the ND economy is doing so well that the state has too much money, and needs to give its citizens a refund. Way to go Obama!
01:41 PM on 06/13/2012
Rich property owners? Do you really think most property owners are rich? You are a child. Obama doesn't have anything to do with ND's oil boom. Did he make the oil? Did he drill it out of the ground?

What this proposal actually says, if passed, is that the state would then fund all local costs to the tune of 800 million a year, so all local control of revenue and expenditures would be lost at the local level and would be totally dependent on whatever state legislature body decides. Sounds pretty stupid, and polls in the state show strong opposition.

Do you know the irish do not pay property tax? They own their land straight out. In fact they consider the land in the USA owned by the goverment and not by the individual because you pay rent (tax) for the land. If you do not pay the rent (tax) they take your land from you. Just a little fun fact.

You get it. The property tax is a holdover from the days when the Kings owned all of the land, and a tax was paid by the serfs to live on and farm the property.
One way to eliminate the individual homeowner from this burden might be to apply a property tax to those properties that generate income i.e. farms, apartment buildings (rents), commercial properties etc. Since most single-family homes aren't income-generating, they would be exempt from this tax. There should be no reason that the loss of one's job means the loss of one's home for non-payment of property taxes.

Rather then paying rent (taxes) for the land you own... tax another source. It is rent because if you have to pay to keep the land you own then really you don't own it do you?
01:01 AM on 06/13/2012
Totally agree. We should eliminate property taxes and income taxes. Why is labor taxed for working?! Instead we should generate revenue from tariffs on imports alone.

The best part is the haters on talk radio today had their heads exploding because they have always said Obama was anti-drilling, anti-oil, anti-business and this kinda shoots that theory down. So now they have twisted it around to a ' What if Obama stops the flow of oil..' story.
