Reports have been made that companies like the H2B program, because the workers they find do work cheaper, even though there ARE enough american workers here to fill the jobs.

Hate to say it folks, but we can't survive as a country if we don't continue to provide opportunity for the best brains in the world. The real issue with the GOP is that they are doing ABSOLUTLY NOTHING BUT WRONG in the quest to produce more of those brains in the US.

I know, I know CHARTER SCHOOLS! Forget about it, charter schools are just a way to pump public school money to the 1% to pay their kids tuition in private schools. It's also away to allow each of the cuckoo, fragmented constituencies to form their own segregated education system on the public dole. It's a travesty and absolutely the wrong policy for a free, Democratic nation. We need ALL of our children to compete with nations that are our educating us with THEIR PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

There are some union issues, some tenure issues, some benefit issues, and some parental/political interference issues that are tearing our schools down, but nothing more than the money culture that has lured people out of education and into more lucrative careers. We can fix our public education system if we want to!

True. They can't find folks willing to work for such low wages doing tedious work. How about a fair wage? See what happens, then.

How does $17/hour sound to you? Damned good to most people but, when GA farmers offered that money to pick their crops, they had seven, SEVEN, people show up! Out of that seven, four quit the same day and the other three didn't last the week! One farmer's neighbors showed up to help him gratis! This was last Summer. Heaven only knows what will happen this year! People always say what you have said but, when push comes to shove, the out of work and desperate don't want to do hard work!

09:24 PM on 06/14/2012
If the repubs, create another depression, have massive bread and unemployment lines, and then tell the untruth, that it's the president's fault, some people will be desperate enough, to work for less than minimum wages, which they want to kill anyway. And mittens, will fire enough to make it possible. Don't let these rodents in, stop them now. They are a blight on the economy, almost creating treason.
09:42 PM on 06/14/2012
Truth is the they ripped off the country and are pretty well prepared to weather a depression, AND add wealth at the same time by taking advantage of the misfortune of others. Best of all, this would complete their quest to 'starve the beast' and eliminate all programs that support people in favor of programs that support corporations.

Wages are going down because there is a world glut of labor, and at the same time robots, and automation are displacing humans in almost every industry. Here in the US that is compounded by the fact that large box stores (Walmart, Target, Lowes, Home Depot, Food Franchises, Supermarkets, Super Cuts, Starbucks, et al) have all but eliminated ALL traditional middle class entrepreneurial opportunities. The ladder to success has had all but the bottom 3 or 4 rungs removed by large corporations.

We need to stop the rodents AND find new ways to generate solid middle class opportunities, OR, we need to jetison a large segment of the population quickly.

The Republican approach that designed to provide subsistence living jobs for all but the 1% is not getting my vote :-)

That's true. And they're on their way with private prison's being made for the last ten years. If they get in, those who don't adhere to the monopoly, will be instant slave labor, residents of those prisons. Cheaper and closer jobs, than those they've sent oversea's already. Some by the same guy running now.

The ultimate GOP plan is to create a massive crisis....yes much worse that this one, .......and then dissolve all social programs and sell off the national assets to private industry. The is not a conspiracy theory, it is dead fact, and follows the exact game plan that was framed over 40 years ago. Too many Americans are buying into the far right idealism, and will be the ones who cry the loudest when they discover that if they don't have a fortune hid in the mattress, they will be in those bread lines, and out of work. Then there will be no going back. This isn't a warning....it's a promise.

It's about time some people got it right. Same lies have been floated around for a decade. I can't believe they can't find construction workers. There are so many siting since the collapse of the housing industry. Same thing with skilled workers that have been laid off for years. Their only problem is they are qualified and business doesn't want to pay
09:54 PM on 06/14/2012
Building houses is no longer requires skilled labor :-)............and it shouldn't...........and that's the problem throughout the economy. Most jobs don't require skills and those that do require significant skills. The opportunities, including entrepreneurial opportunities, for the people in the middle have all been gobbled up by monopoly corporations. This, couples with globalization and a 'glut' in the world labor pools is bringing a few birds home to roost: (1) the generations of people who grew the American dream are no longer necessary. The corporations own the intellectual property and they are spreading it around the world to increase their profits.......none of that goes back to those who built it, except the 1-10% who are invested in it :-); (2) Workers around the world want our lifestyle (and who wouldn't), and their willing to work harder, longer, and smarter than we are; (3) The world is awash in people. The majority of those people live in abject poverty. Have we reached some sort of Malthusian tipping point between the number of available humans and our ability invent, build, and market new goods and services that are needed to employ them?

What you say sounds good in a university debate, but not the real world. In my area for example they added several housing developments about 8 years ago. They hired laborers and tradesman that were not union workers. They had no training. I talked to a building inspector that was working for real estate companies. Typically he would find a few minor problems in homes in the older subdivisions. When he looked at the new homes with the "imported" labor he would typically find multiple pages of defects. I knew one lady that had saved her money to buy into the suburban dream and she was crying and wishing she had stayed in her old neighborhood.
So yes they want the jobs and will work for less, but you get what you pay for....no skills. I'm afraid too many people are buying into this cheaper mantra. People are starting to look at quality for many things and when all industry realizes this, things may change. But hiring cheap or going to the cheap labor market brings law suits and problems with crapy goods. I will add that there are many foreign companies that embrace quality and understand that it does have meaning.
