of course they would use the enriched uranium to make warheads-why would any country believe that they wouldn't?
And it is high time the US stopped using oil all together, there are viable options out there, we rely far too much on the middle east for our oil, we need to cut the apron strings already

You can't make nuclear warheads with 20% enriched uranium.

If there are alternatives to oil why has the US wasted 40+ years (since Carter) and not invested more than pennies in completely rebuilding the US energy production, distribution and usage infrastructure?

Your goal of getting the US off oil-based energy is a good one, but Americans completely lack the political will to spend trillions of tax dollars to make it happen, so the US will continue to pay the increasing cost for using oil.

To call the West bullies is pretty far fetched, especially from a country that held US citizens hostage for 444 days. The issue to me is simple, it's not if Iran enriches Uranium, it's what they'll do with it. Uranium 235 has a half-life of 700 million years. Even if they do nothing but have it...in 700 million years it will be on top of the Himalaya's due to plate tectonics. Enriched Uranium is a poison to this planet and to date the US has destroyed 25,000 nuclear warheads and still hasn't found a suitable "permanent" disposal sight. The US hasn't enriched any Uranium in almost 50 years, and our planet doesn't need more. Talk about dishonesty, every time Iran tries to justify production or more U-235 they're not even being honest with themselves.

With a shelf-life like that it's hardly surprising that the US doesn't need to enrich any more. I guess they have loads. Hostages? Erm... Guantanamo anyone? Good grief... the trouble with one-sided arguments is that they just go round in ever-decreasing circles until... well, you know the rest.

You of course realize that they weren't US citizens but embassy personnel?
And that the Iranians had only just overthrown a brutal dictator which the US brought to power in a CIA backed coup?
And that that same dictator was granted political asylum in the US?
And that there was talk that the US was planing to bring that dictator back to power?

You missed my point completely....It's not about the past, it's about making radio active isotopes with a 700 million year half life. It was only 65 million years ago that dinosaurs roamed the earth. It's bad enough to enrich to a 3% fuel grade, which exposed how dangerous it is in the recent tsunami in Japan. My point was aimed at the insanity of the very idea of producing highly enriched Uranium 235, period. Simply put, there is no acceptable justification to produce something so poisonous.

Look who's talking. The pipsqueak mouthpiece for an illegitimate, unelected government that hijacked an entire country by using the force of arms.

Instead of negotiating nukes we should be negotiating terns of their departure from government.
12:41 PM on 06/21/2012
That, obviously, is the goal of the United States and Israel. The negotiations will go nowhere until the Iranian government falls.

There is no interest in the possibility of some future Iranian nuclear threat. Israel and the US want a regime change.

Once again Israel wants to be the Centre of the Universe. The world must resolve around this little country of 17 million. Ubbelievable!!! If Israel faced the exact same thing we would never hear the end of it and constant victimhood. The Hyprocrisy of the West/Israel is astounding. No one is talking about the nuclear fallout in Japan either I wonder why!!

Iran can do what it darn well pleases and to hec with the West/Israel. They have no right whatsoever to who and who cannot have nuclear energy. These so called Gods who supposed know what's best for the 'Greater Good."

Myop really! Israel has been going on about Iran's nukes for a decade now. These talks wouldnt be happening if it wasnt for Israel declaring the sky is falling. Bibi brought us to this point.

China/India are still getting OIl from Iran which the West/israel doesnt like. Everyone must bow down to West/Israel because Israel doesnt want to loose power and control in the region. US/Uk want the OIl. The Banksters want control of the Iranian Bank to be put under their PRIVATE wing like the rest of the banks in other nations.

Iran has shown much restraint holding abck against these constant acts of war done by Israel/US. At least the Iranians have been honest about the talks. Iran has given the West/Israel everything yet they have to surrender completely to be yet another puppet dictatorship like the other ME nations. They learned a lot since 53 so the Iranians wont be fooled again.
12:47 PM on 06/21/2012
They are not afraid of some possible Iranian threat. They are afraid that Israel will start a war that it can't finish and go nuclear.
President Obama isn't going to start the war (unless something huge happens) - he'd be lynched and I don't think he wants war.

"Rafsanjani heads an advisory body to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's Supreme Leader, who has final say on all state matters." Now, as someone who has had to explain the peculiarities of more than one form of democratic government to someone who doesn't really pay attention to the peculiarities of their own, this is a rather simplistic and somewhat misleading characterization. Though technically an advisory body to the Leader of Iran's executive branch of the judicial side of their government (Americans tend to consider the executive branch of the legislative side of their government as a completely seperate branch, but Iran has two executives, one similar to the American executive branch, and this second one) most of what it does is sort of the equivalent of the body/committee that takes the different versions of bills that are passed by the Senate and the House and creates a unified version that will pass in both. And though the Leader of the judicial executive is the highest legal authority, ruling on what is and is not constitutionally permitted, and so has the final say, he 'serves at the pleasure' of the directly elected Assembly of Experts, who regularly review his rulings and decide whether he can continue to serve as 'Leader' (no, there is no appeal for their determination, and they don't even have to specify why they decided to remove him from office)

Nonsense.
Assembly of Experts has about as much influence on Supreme Leader as Politburo had on Stalin-- none.
Just as anyone of these Experts who would try to remove the Supreme Ruler from power will quickly find himself ( they don't accept women as Experts) on a chopping block or exile. There are a few examples already.

Fact-- the imposition of theocratic Supreme Ruler is a Direct violation of the ideals of 79 Revolution.
Iranians ended up with one despot instead of another. Ayatollahs certainly butchered more innocents that Shah could ever even dream about.

Iran harbors terrorist, and would give nuclear weapons to them. You can put a nuclear bomb in a brief case. They would be reckless with them. Its not about being a bully, its about being responsible. Funny they want nuclear capability for electricity and, they have yet to build the power grids to supply it.

Spin, hype, or outright lie? You decide. "want Iran to stop enriching uranium to a level that is just steps away from its use as the core of nuclear warheads" 'low-enriched uranium (LEU)can not be used practicably to build nuclear weapons' according to America's own nuclear weapons scientists. The 19.75% enriched uranium that is the highest grade Iran is producing is, according to IAEA and those American weapons scientists, Low-Enriched Uranium. So, I'd like to hear what you HuffPo readers think, is that phrase, a standard phrase you hear from politicians, pundits, and the media, spin, hype, or an outright lie. Or do you think America's nuclear weapons scientists had it wrong, and the politicians, pundits, and media are better informed than the folks who know exactly how a nuclear weapon works? I'll post a later summary of the quantity and quality of the responses.
