In the video above, Romney is repeating an already debunked lie that Obama promised the stimulus would keep unemployment under 8%.  No such promise was ever made by Obama, nor any member of his administration.

After his election, prior to his inauguration, Obama’s team released a January 9, 2009 report entitled: "The Job Impact of the American Recovery and Reinvestment  Read More...  by Christina Romer, chairwoman of the president's Council of Economic Advisers, and Jared Bernstein, the vice president's top economic adviser.   The 8% figure appears on a table in the report modeling the relative effect the stimulus would have on expected unemployment.  As of November, 2008, when the stimulus plan was being hatched, unemployment was 6.8%; one month later 7.3%, and when Obama was inaugurated, 7.8%.  By the end of February, 2009, when Obama’s watered-down stimulus package passed, 8.2%.  One month later unemployment hit 8.6%; three months later 9.4% and still rising.  Bush policies were responsible for this unemployment, not Obama policies.

The stimulus could not be implemented immediately; it required several months to organize the administration of the policy, to receive, review, evaluate and prioritize proposals, and actual stimulus spending did not begin until just after the beginning of Obama’s first budget year, which began on October 1, 2009.  By the end of October, 2009, unemployment hit its peak of 10.1%.  As soon as the stimulus spending began, unemployment began to fall.  Most of the stimulus was scheduled to be spent in 2010 and 2011.

"Eric Cantor said in a PBS interview on July 8, 2009. "We were promised, the president said we would keep unemployment under 8.5 percent. We're now over 9.5 percent, on our way to 10 percent." [Cantor referred to the Romer/Bernstein report]  Either Cantor lied about any “promise.”

 http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2009/jul/09/eric-cantor/Cantor-and-other-republicans-say-obama-promised-s/

Eric Cantor, R-Virginia, House Republican Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, Reps. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., and Lynn Westmoreland, R-Ga., Sean Hannity and others on Faux News  called it a "promise."  They all either knowingly lied, or were clueless.  Now Romney has joined in this long-debunked lie, and his pants are on fire with the rest of them.

Who was it who STARTED the Afghanistan war, i.e., decided to send our troops into war? Who started the Iraq war? Who couldn't find OBL even though he was hiding in plain sight? Who started the gun walking Wide Receiver program (one of the dumbest ideas EVER) that morphed into Fast and Furious? Who lied about the football player turned soldier's death to his family? (My apologies for not remembering his name) Who gave away TARP money without any oversight or accountability? Who said, "You're doing a heck of a job Brownie" while shrugging his shoulders. And you have the audacity to call President Obama stupid and incompetent. George Bush left a disastrous legacy.

Why do people even bother telling Obama his plans are stupid and prone to failure? He is much too stubborn to give them any heed.

And Obama ignored Biden, so bin Laden is now dead. Biden was wrong, Obama was right.

The US lost 50,000 in Vietnam vs 2,000 in Afghanistan. We were attacked from Af, not Vietnam. The Afghanistan war was the only justified US war of my lifetime, except maybe the Gulf War. It will be remembered like the Gulf War, one of the most justified and successful wars in history.

All of those who died in Af under Obama were volunteers. They wanted to be there, believed in the mission. Vietnam was fought mostly by unwilling conscripts, and 25x as many died there as in Af.

50,000 US soldiers died in Vietnam, compared to less than 10,000 in all wars since. The years since the draft and the Cold War ended are the most peaceful in US history, fewest soldier casualties per-capita. The generations after the Boomers have sacrificed less than any other in US history. Volunteers fight minor police actions against puny foes, yet the young think it's major warfare.

Being a soldier in Af is about 3x as dangerous as a US fisherman. 2,000 died in ten years in Af, versus 4,000 US pedestrians killed annually by cars in the US. Soldiers in Af are cops, you don't take them off the streets because it's dangerous - it's why they are there, duh.

The young aren't drafted now, those in Af want to be there. Why the whining?
08:33 PM on 06/25/2012
the last "war" that was justifiable, was WWII...one man's "soldier" is a another person's 19y.o. son, so the "numbers" matter, particularly when based on lies and political distortions.
08:52 PM on 06/25/2012
The War in Afghanistan was as justifiable as any war America has ever fought. The Government of that nation gave aid and comfort to those who attacked us on 9/11, murdering 3,000+ innocent Americans, literally going about their days work.
Only the very foolish will trivialze that attack on America.

If Bush hadn't squandered our opportunity in Afghanistan by invading Iraq, there would be no Afghanistan War any longer. There have been casualties and we should be out of Afghanistan, if America had helped rebuild Afghanistan after we helped oust the Russians, Bin Laden and the Taliban would probably have never gotten a foothold and there wouldn't have been a 9/11.

2,197 comments? So this is "writ on water." As "MikeDu" points out, the Iraq war was doomed to fail. There was no good way to end it, but we needed to get out in all DUE haste. It took Obama over 2 years to leave with minimal damage, but neither a "good" nor immediate exit was possible. A decent future for the Iraqi people is unlikely. The same sad future is likely for Afghanistan. We had a better rationale for being there to rid us and them of the Taliban and al-Quaeda. When Soviets retreated in the 1980's, we, in effect, declared victory in our proxy war and left Afghans to their own devices--and tragic fates. So we decided in 2002 to stick around a while longer. The tragic Iraq sideshow drained almost all resources for a US supported recovery; and Taliban resurged. Now, once again, we cannot "win." Obama probably knew Biden was probably right, but had to make a last ditch effort to try to stabilize the situation minimally to permit at least a non-catastrophic retreat with fewer losses than would occur with an immediate run. Nothing "good" can happen during the retreat nor after we are gone. The devices to which we leave the Afghan people may be slightly better than those of the 1980's--slightly. Nothing good could happen if we tried to stay indefinitely; nothing good can happen when we leave. As always, it's a "lose-lose"situation.

It's encouraging, though, that your view is changing.

If we'd listened to Biden - bin Laden would still be alive. Biden would disagree with you now, he knows Obama was right. He thought Obama shouldn't go after bin Laden, either. Dems have always been surrender monkeys. Voters don't trust peaceniks, it's why they elect Repubs. They only voted for Obama because he promised to escalate in Af, otherwise McCain would now be President.
