WOW a good news story. I would do the same. Honesty is best policy and you will be rewarded in many ways in the future. Wait until you get to heaven and God says - Peter play video clip #124897 and there you are finding the money and returning it to its rightful owner and God then says - You get the express pass to our luxury cloud.

Good for them! But that's what they should have done anyway. They did the right thing, especially consider that he is a teacher.

The law requires the finder of lost items take it to the police and make a report. The police is to try to find the rightful owner. It is up to the owner to give the finder a reward or not. If no righter owner is found after 6 months, the item is given to the finder. If they had kept the money (to pay off back taxes or student loans), that would have been stealing and they could be charged. Since it's more than $500, it's a felony theft.

He is right that it is such a shame that someone who did the right thing and follows the law is haled as a hero and as "one in a million". Very sad statement about our society!

I was thinking the same thing.

"...it is such a shame..." You are absolutely right. Back when I was brought up being taught right from wrong was a mainstay of good parenting.

"It's the right thing to do and its just a shame that people now think that doing the right thing is extraordinary," ...

If I were the mother of each of these people I would be very, very proud. It's true that doing the right thing is too often seen as extraordinary. I can remember being thanked by customers for being courteous. My kids hear, "Wow! Your parents are still married?"

Wow, what a nice story to offset the invective on the other blogs. This is what I like about America, people voluntarily helping people in need, because it is in their heart to do so. May their life be abundant for their goodness to the sick man.

They did not do it to "help people in need" or to "help the sick man" out of their kindness.
They found the lost money that "belonged" to the sick man. They can either return it to the owner which makes them honest people or they can keep it which makes them thieves.
It's so sad that not being a thief is now considered a heroic act and generous goodness.

I think that they were blessed a long time ago by having wonderful parents that taught and demnstrated good moral character.

Finally! A good story. Its really getting old hearing about all the bad things happening in the country. It’s nice to see there are a few good people left.

What goes around, comes around in this world. I'm wishing good things for these people. They deserve it.

Gee an honest teacher- every conservative government official thinks that teachers are undeserving and should work for far less while taking more responsibility- go figure.Given the low pay, I'm mystified teachers don't garbage pick and go dumpster diving more often.
04:46 PM on 06/28/2012
Hopefully you are not a teacher. Your thought process is bizarre.
08:50 AM on 06/29/2012
No, I'm not a teacher. I would not want that job. But thanks for noticing my thought process.
03:45 PM on 06/28/2012
all they to do was look around and see if everything had been caught by video. at that point you have to return it. i don't think its all about two people with nice shiny souls here. may also have a little "well they saw us pick it up so we better give it back or might get in trouble"
03:52 PM on 06/28/2012
Maybe that is something YOU would have done but not these people.

Good for him! I hope the owner has the decency to give him a reward. I realize he doesn't owe this man anything but it is the right thing to do. Losing 10% in the form of a reward is a lot better than losing 100% of everything.
