Just like you can't believe women are allowed to vote, own property and decide for themselves who to marry, right?

This is the problem with appling feminist logic to the real world. Female tennis players concede that they are not equal by not competing against men or even competing in matches as long as men. Then turn around when it is time to pass out money and demand that they get treated as an equal. If the female tennis players want to earn the same prize money as men the sould compete in men's tounaments, they do it in golf and racing I'm sure they could do it in tennis.

Your argument assumes that time on court or purely skill are the criteria for payment. Payment in modern sports has nothing to do with anything other than who can bring in the most revenue. Who is bringing in the paying fans? Who is helping the sport get good television ratings? This is why women's basketball players don't make very much money...they don't bring in the revenue. Tennis on the other hand is a very different story. It has nothing to do with feminist logic and everything to do with profit.

Professional athletics is about viewership. That's what drives money. I'm sure professional arena football players work very hard...but they make less money than I do because no one cares to watch them compete.

Tennis and ice skating are the two sports where women dominate (probably gymnastics too), in terms of popularity...so they make the most money. If men started bringing in the same number of viewers they could make the same money even if they only played one set.

With the newer technologies over the last 20-25 years, I absolutely get why women's tennis is more popular. The men's game is not as exciting. It's too focused on aces. I'd be curious to know if men's games are actually longer in minutes, even though they certainly play more sets. They seem to have far fewer rallies, which is the most exciting part for the viewer.
06:39 PM on 06/28/2012
To cmarsh and onionboy

First of all, prize money does have something to do with skill, that is why the winners of the tournaments receive more money than anyone else. Secondly, the men's game is more popular than the women's game. The men's matches consistantly get hire TV ratings than the women's matches and tickets to men's matches cost more. Men's matches a typically longer which means longer veiwership which means more time to sell to commericals to sponsors and more money spent on consecions at the venues holding the matches. There is a wide held perception that women's tennis is more popular than men's but the data does not support that veiw.

Make it equal and the debate goes away. It doesn't hurt the male players at all.

Except maybe some male players' gigantic egos (paired with a small you-know-what).
03:10 PM on 06/28/2012
Agreed, Simon, to certain extent.

For those matches where the guys have to grind out the best of 3 sets, they should be paid more. But when both the men and women are playing best of 2 sets - same pay is in order.
03:44 PM on 06/28/2012
I think you mean, best of five and best of three.
07:35 PM on 06/29/2012
You're absolutely right.
06:00 PM on 06/28/2012
So a really dominant male player who wins in straight sets should be paid less than a less dominant male player that is pushed to 5 sets?
07:38 PM on 06/29/2012
You could apply that same rationale to the women players winning in two as opposed to three. Either way, the men are required to play longer than the ladies and thus are paid more.

guys going to get himself in trouble for this one, but its true, the men play longer, more difficult matches and play at a higher level. equal work, equal pay........ i seem to remember hearing about this somewhere before. but hey, guys have been dominating money for as long as there has been money, so if these girls get theirs, then who is to suffer from it ?

"Equal work for equal pay."  Objectively equal. How can I make that more clear?
01:13 PM on 06/28/2012
Suddenly, I'm not a fan of his anymore. Needless to say his comment is extremely sexist!

The reason why women do not get paid as much as men in sports is NOT because they don't put on a better show, because I think they do. It is more entertaining to watch them whack the ball with so much passion it utters a grunt! Plus they have the cutest outfits! I think that sports is something males enjoy because of the competition and testosterone involved! As a woman I have less interest in playing and watching competitive sports than watching a drama or comedy or shopping, socializing with friends etc. Why are talk shows geared towards women? I think that if there was a talk show (not about sports) geared towards men, the ratings would be poor and the host(s) would be paid less than Barbara Walters, Oprah, the hosts of "The Talk" etc.
01:53 PM on 06/28/2012
Do you think it's sexist that women will play at most 3 games to win a set where men always have to play at least 3, with up to 5 games total for the "same" goal of completing a set?
02:54 PM on 06/28/2012
agree, Let's women play minimum 3 sets for an equal pay....

Perhaps, then, women tennis players should just wear cute outfits and run around grunting, instead of playing all that complicated tennis stuff. With the extra energy they save by not playing, they could grunt and sweat for 5 games worth of time, making it all better!

In the name of 'fairness' and 'equality', why do we even have male and female sports?

Why not just one category - all. Everyone competes, everyone is ranked, and we don't separate people by gender. If a female can compete with the best, so be it.
01:53 PM on 06/28/2012
"everyone is ranked"

I read that as "everyone is naked". Suddenly, women's only leagues started sounding like a great idea.

Simon is correct.

Women should not be paid the same...they don't draw the ratings, they don't play the same number of sets. There's no reason to give out the same prize winnings.

This is progressive engineering at its worst.

my point is that if he's going to make a statement like that, he'd better be greater than 13th. notice that even the men who are ranked above him aren't this silly to become involved in an issue that they have no control over. if he doesn't like the terms of the game, quit and come back when the terms change. until then, work.
