So Apple goes to China enslaves a large group of Chinese people and put them in labor camps where something like 15 a year commit suicide. Apple bypasses China's own union laws and the only the thing they get sued for is the ipad name. Wow!

Have you never read anything about Foxcon? Not a good place to work, and Apple doesn't make it any better for the employees. It's been on this here website many times.

In the 1970s India decided not to recognize American trademarks like Coke and Pepsi....they allowed local companies to use the logos and brand value and basically tossed the real companies out of the country.....you take a huge risk when you go into this part of the world

Apple is smart to pay the Chinese off. Same thing happened with French food and beverage group, Danone. By Chinese law, a foreign group cannot hold more than 49% of a company operating in China, so Danone had to work with a Chinese firm.

That company eventually stole licences and made off with much of Danone's distribution rights. When Danone objected, they were faced with losing their entire presence in China worth tens of billions of euros. They eventually settled. That is how the Chinese do business. It is not just Apple but any foreign firm. We are talking about a truly ruthless govt and businesses in China!!

You are absolutely right about Chinese predatory business tactics when it comes to foreign companies doing business in China. Not only do they want to control your Chinese subsidiary, they want all your trade secret, technology, know how and licensing rights, if you want to do business in China.

I want to feel bad for apple on this one, but its kind of hard while it's using the same ridiculous tactics to try to stomp out it's competition.

The only thing ridiculous is your lack of knowledge combined with your boisterous claims. Apple claims that Samsung has copied its technology so such an extent that they are building their entire success by marketing products that not only look like Apple devices but actually have the very same features!!

Yes I know what apple is claiming - and it's a ridiculous claim - because everyone copies.  Apple is guilty of the same thing (i could rattle off a list of things if you like), yet feels it should sue everyone over it - and as the industry is built off copying - other companies have sued apple back.  Who wins? no one.  It's ridiculous, and the consumer is footing the legal bills. Copying is how progress is made.  If everyone had to start over from square one every time, we'd still be living like cavemen.
12:48 PM on 07/02/2012
...and yet, no one can explain what exactly Samsung has "copied" other than blathering on about superficial resemblance to the iPhone's form factor, which predates the iPhone industry-wide.

As far as "the very same features", it's hard not to since Apple has been copying their featureset from Android for a couple of years now.

Wow... they really got ripped off on with this one. The people in the Chinese IP department should be fired.
12:23 PM on 07/02/2012
Chump change. Probably the cost of fueling the corporate jets for a year and throw in the cost of a couple of Xmas office parties. Access to that market is worth incredibly more.

Love the irony of a payout, as Apple sues its competitors for even following the form factor of its products. Meanwhile, everybody's product innards are crafted in Taiwan/Korea and assembled in China.
