I was a stay at home mom and managed to raise two children WITHOUT drinking wine or smoking weed. Seriously, neither group of women have anything to brag about.

Uhhh... this is just so dumb. Pointing at other mother's who get drunk or drink wine heavily to use as an argument to prove that smoking marijuana is okay is beside the point. A) drinking heavily is NOT okay if you are caring for a child, and personally I feel that drinking heavily at anytime is a poor choice just as drugs are. 2) Smoking marijuana is illegal except for a few that allow you to smoke it if you have a prescription-- still not okay to parent a child while high.... And then the argument about it being "natural" yea so what!?! A lot of other things ex: mushrooms, night shade, water hemlock, etc.are natural but two of which will kill you... my point being that just because something is "natural" doesn't mean it's good for you.

And just because the Gov't CALLS it a drug doesn't mean it's bad for you. Agreed?
09:27 PM on 07/26/2012
Yep, so if you drink alcohol responsibly in moderation, everything's cool.

But roll a joint & you might get ... (wait for it) ... a $100 ticket (a civil citation on the level of a parking ticket).

What would your kids think?

Im a mother and i smoke pot, im not lazy iam very active i got a job and i love my job, i rather smoke pot than get drunk and get mad take it out on the child and or something stupid.

Productive parenting is not easy..but to use a now illegal drug to get thru the day..well being stoned or drunk...the kids suffer.
If you cannot handle the day to day- exception possibly being for those who have chronic pain-doings then do not have children. You are only hurting them.

Whilst i don't agree with your first statement. a bowl or two is unlikely to cause any issues other than the potential for arrest, I do agree whole-heartedly with your second.
Now all we have to do is somehow teach all Women and Girls what hardships they will encounter being a parent and how to avoid being brain-washed into becoming one by society, their mothers, women's magazines, etcetera. Good luck to the Girl who manages to choose to remain child-free as she will endure a constant barrage from almost everyone she knows about how wonderful, or fulfilling motherhood is.
From what I see I'd say a vast majority of parents shouldn't be and many shouldn't have been allowed to be.
09:30 PM on 07/26/2012
In most places today, possessing small amounts of marijuana is not even an arrestable offense. Rather, it's a civil citation (same as a parking ticket) that isn't considered criminal.
11:25 PM on 07/24/2012
The kid is much better off if the parent is buzzed on pot than on booze.

"Mother's Little Helper?". Go get yourselves straight. You are breaking the law in front of your kids. Great role models, you are. Wine is not illegal, Pot is. Shjould it be decriminalized? Yes, absolutely, but it is not yet, so set the example for your kids and abvoid illegal substances.

Don't judge if you have not walked in her shoes. Her kids will be fine. No one is getting drunk and no one is getting hurt. Oh My God its illegal so glad you told us that, I would never have thought.
11:41 PM on 07/24/2012
Something may be wrong with the system if we legalize alcohol, the one substance that causes soooooooooooo many deaths, while on the other hand, criminalizing the use of pot which has never been proven to cause death strictly from that use alone. Can we say "Tax" anyone? As the whole reason for alcohol being legal.

My dad was/is a stoner and a drunk while I was growing up. It hurts a child when they realize that their parent isn't happy around you unless they are in an "altered state." Kids pick up on these things sooner or later. Did it mellow my dad out? Sure. Did it inhibit his ability to parent? Absolutely. To this day, he is more interested in smoking "secretly" in the garage than spending time with me when I visit from college. He's too lazy to cooperate with me on FAFSA, too forgetful to pay my health insurance...

I'm sure being a parent is stressful. If you can't deal with it sober, don't be a parent please. Kids suffer while you enjoy your precious high.

NO ONE MENTIONED PRESCRIPTIONS! Those are just as bad, especially when mixed with alcohol. Personally, I've seen both types and the Marijuana mom was WAYYYY better with kids and responsibility.
10:38 PM on 07/24/2012
Woes me I can't cope so I have to get high on weed or a snoot full of wine boo hoo woes me. I feel sorry for your kids they deserve a mom that is not high or s___t faced. Do your kid (s) a favor Grow up or get some counseling.

Seems to me that the vast majority of the world's population finds a way without getting high. So that is alane duck excuse if I ever heard one. Don't want the responsibility of being a parent which involves being there 100% for your kids? If you are a woman, keep your legs closed. If you're a man, keep it in your pants. Can't deal with the idea of the pressures of married life? Stay single. The minute kids become a part of the equation, it's not just about YOU and what makes YOU happy. Your kids should come first. They aren't pets you can just feed and leave hanging. And I don't care if you THINK you're on top of everything. If you are high from weed or buzzin' from alcohol, you are not 100% there for anyone.

I'm a single man. I drink a few glasses of Sangria now and then. When you're buzzed, you are not fully in control. Walking 20 feet to the bathroom is an exercise in motor control. If you are a wine-drinking parent and God forbid something happens to your kid while you are buzzin', The warm and fuzzy sensation just might prevent you from reacting fast enough to do what needs to be done.

If your glass of wine or your joint is something you feel you cannot do without, then you are on a dangerous road. The best thing for your kids would be to have them taken away from you.
11:44 PM on 07/24/2012
That is unfortunate and I'm sorry you are going through this. But do you think that being high or inebriated when caring for a child is the answer hell no it's a recipe for disaster.

Why in the world would anyone want to expose their unborn child to anything that could potentially hurt them.

"Eases morning sickness." I'm sorry unless you got pregnant in the 3rd grade then you should know that comes with the territory. SUCK it up!

There should seriously be an application process before people should be allowed to have children!!!!

I followed your link and some of the links provided there and it's a terrible case. We've turned crimes that should be nothing more than simple citation and fine into jail terms and crimes that should result in fair punishment into revenge fantasies that serve no purpose other than to help a DA get reelected as being 'tough on crime'. We have become a society that punishes people forever for indiscretions in their youth and we are a worse society, a less free society for it. This woman should've been charged with manslaughter/murder two (if NC has the distinction as some states do) and never sentenced to LWOP. However, we've also become so hard -- so tough on crime that people are afraid to speak out let alone defend people who made mistakes.

We're under the illusion that criminals are a separate species when in reality one cop who decides to put you through the wringer when you're innocent (and it happens I've seen it) or one unintentional action, foolishly so but unintentional nonetheless, can ruin a life forever. The biggest threat to the freedom of all Americans is the prison systems and the cops, DAs. and Judges who feed it because their performance is judged not on whether they act justly but whether or not they lock people up and for how long.
