If my son tells me that he wants to be a Catholic priest I would kill myself.

What a way to die then. If I have a son I would be happy if he wanted to be a priest. In fact, I'd feel blessed.

I hope they tasted the fruit of a normal life, before they took orders.

That way they can better advise others. And their celibacy will be that much more powerful.

Celibacy taken to justify chosen virginity is not of much point.

What a wonderful thing for one family to experience. I know two priests well, and both have brothers that are also priests and one also has a sister who is a nun. I don't think that there is anything in the world that they would rather be doing.

Good luck to the three brother Padres in their mission herding their flocks! If it is truly God's calling, may He bless them a thousand times over.

Helping other people is very useful.

But I usually don't presume to tell other people what to do with their lives.

Becoming a priest is mostly not about helping people. Sorry.

Also, I am just giving my opinion, as you are. Glad you tried to act superior though, shows what kind of person you are.
11:32 AM on 07/26/2012
I've told my husband, who is in the military, many times that if something happens to him, I would become a nun after the kids were grown. My Dad is a Deacon, my brother is in seminary, my cousin is a nun, and I have another brother who is discerning becoming a Priest. I find this world a hard, negative place. People who sacrifice what they planned to serve people are rare. My husband sacrifices in the military, but he can have a family, a wife, kids. Priests are called to serve the people, to help them get to Heaven, while being only answerable to God (no spouse) and that is beautiful... You can say what you want, but these brothers are living a life that only few accept and are really blessed to lead...

I think that there are more people like you than you would think. I've been happily married for more than 20 years, and if something happened to my wife I would seriously consider becoming a monk and a possibly a priest. I recently spent time with a monk that convinced me that it could be a wonderful way to spend the rest of my life. He has 5 daughters but later in life was ordained a monk and a priest. While there is sacrifice involved, everybody seems to focus on that, when there is a joy in serving God that comes in abundance.

The priest shortage doesn't have to be. The wacko old man in Rome is responsible for this shortage--a shortage all over the world. Open up the presbyterate and episcopate to women and openly gay men and lesbians. Have each parish select their religious leaders, and, if need be, remove them.

The professional, career, full-time priest and bishop are quickly becoming a thing of the past. Consign the entire seminary trained hand-picked clergy to the trash heap of history. Nobody selected these guys, but the old boy's club in the diocese and the prancing purple divas in the Vatican. Both filled with reprobates and criminals awaiting exposure for centuries of sexual abuse activities and continuing cover-ups of those activities.
LA is just the tip of the iceberg. There isn't a diocese in the world-wide Church without it's share of these pederasts hiding out and endangering the welfare of children. The Justice Department needs to step in on a grand scale and seek out the thousands who are still at large.
02:27 PM on 07/26/2012
It is not true that priest shortage is "all over the world", it is more so in America and Western Europe than anywhere else. The problem is when you bring priests from Africa, or India, or Brazil, or Mexico, or... to America, most Americans have a hard time understanding their accents. The Church is bringing more and more young priests from around the world to minister in America. Any Catholic on the thread would confirm this.

Yes, and these imports are often extreme right-wingers, sexual predators themselves. Just look at the numbers of clergy brought in who are being tried, convicted, and imprisoned for rape, robbery, and other crimes.. Best to abolish the career priesthood and the episcopate and elect local good lay folk--men and women.
11:10 PM on 07/26/2012
The Episcopal Church has done all of these things - and they still have a priest shortage.

Of course, they also have a parishioner shortage, too...

WRONG,  The Episcopal Church has an over supply of clergy.  I know this from Anglian clergy I've known. There is nothing Protestantism which can begin to equal the breadth and depth of sexual abuse going back centuries not just decades.  Get real and climb out of the clouds.

What a wonderful story. Too bad there are so many negative comments. I think that the people that have a problem with religion in general or the Catholic Church in particular should deal with their own issues instead of trying to dictate to the rest of us what we should believe. As to these three brother Priests, well done!
09:19 AM on 07/26/2012
Is being a priest the same as being on welfare? They both live off of other peoples money.
02:32 PM on 07/26/2012
No, it is not the same, because they actually serve those people who give or contribute money to make the Church's and the priest's mission successful. In your time of needs, you go to the priest for spiritual advice and guidance, for prayer, blessing... just as you go to your shrink or doctor when you are depressed, delusional or sick. Are your shrink and doctor the same as being on welfare? "They both live off of [your] money."

Where did I wish misfortune on anyone? All of the sons have chosen to lead a celibate life. Kind of a self limiting move wouldn't you agree? If I were the Pope, I would not allow this. A Catholic answer to "Saving Private Ryan" is required here.

Congratulations to the entire family. With all the bad news in the world, this was a breath of fresh air. The parents should be commended for raising children who would want to give up everything to follow God's orders.

It's all in your faith.  If you believe strongly in something, you'll follow that belief.  Whether it's God or a dream or anything else.

I never heard of anyone dying because they didn't have sex. Sex is great, but is it the most important thing in life. I agree with many here that these comments are angry. As the parents stated, they never encouraged or discouraged their sons to pursue the priesthood. I don't know of any parent who can force a child to be something, at least not in the 21st century. Young people have a mind of their own. I think it's a good thing to see young people pursuing the priesthood, inspite of all the problems with the Catholic Church. The sex scandal was bad and I can't stand it, but I look to the good things in the church. Now if this was another situation where people were casting a general statement on a group of people based on race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, there will be outrage from all sectors. But there's no outrage when people go around calling all Catholic priest molestors or calling Catholic or religious people stupid, dumb or whatever hurtful words people use.

Is sex the most important thing in the world? Only when your not having it. One of the prerequisites before a Jew can enter the mystical world in the Kabbalist tradition is a healthy sex life. I believe the Sufi tradition in Islam holds that man reaches the purest point of clarity in a mystical experience when he is ejaculating. The key here is that a mandatory celibate life is not healthy. The numbers cited above about American parishes not having resident priests is only the tip of the iceberg. How many American parishes have only one priest now but may have had three or four 40 years ago? Most of the priests I have had contact with over the last several years always looked beat and over worked.

Sex cults go way back. That's not evidence that they are correct.
The Scriptures teach not to focus on such things but on the spirit.
