Dr. Watkins,
I think that your article clearly indicates how disparate views are drawn along color lines. It is a helluva shame that even now, in this century, we can imagine that what you want for yourself and your children (as a black man) is different from what I want for myself and my children (as a white man). Have we really reached such a point that the superficial things that separate us carry more weight than the intrinsic things that unite us? Have we really reached a point when the difference in skin color supersedes our spiritual connection?
President Obama is the president of the United States of America. True, that makes him the president of black America; but that is inclusively, not excluding all other Americans.
I wish we could get past this childish urge to label ourselves as "B"lack or "W"hite Americans, and imagining that the label implies certain things not accessible to the rest of America. I'd rather honestly confront long-held resentments, and talk through them, than perpetuate this division over color lines.

I dream of a day when we are all just "Americans". When skin color is no more of a big deal than eye color, or hair color. I think to label ourselves are black, white, hispanic, whatever, does nothing except continue to divide us.

i totally agree with u...the sad thing is it actually seems to be getting worse, our country is so divided it's really heartbreaking. i was lucky enough to be raised by a mother who taught me that racism was not acceptable on any level and i will always be grateful for that.

This "urge" is neither childish nor is it out of a vacuum. For most of this nation's history it was the law. Some were able to take advantage of that law, others were kept from access and participation by law. Whatever intrinsically united us was entirely theoretical, even absurd, as we have never been intrinsically united even in war.

That you are unaware of the difference in what we may want for our children actually speaks to your naivete far more than any possible astonishment.
07:16 AM on 08/11/2012
I disagree; I think the "urge" is incredibly childish. That "for most of this nation's history it was the law" is no reason to perpetuate it. In fact, it is the best argument to end it.

I understand what the Dr. is saying in his piece. The question I now have is "what exactly does he want Obama to do?" Support African-Americans more. Ok. How? Policy specifics please. Policies that will either pass through Congress, hold up in the Supreme Court or have the ability to be enacted through executive order. Policies that will be deficit neutral, or they won't fly. Policies that will create more equality of opportunity, not equality of results as those too so often fail.

Let's get down it- specifics please!

People like you constantly make excuses for Obama because when Blacks like Smiley and West try to put an agenda before Obama,you cry foul.I'm sick of the doublespeak .....
12:46 PM on 08/13/2012
Okay, did you support the Smiley/West Agenda? Please enlighten me as to how you and your followers signed on to this agenda, sent it to the White House and got a rejection letter. If you have not done so, please do not get mad about not getting something you did not ask for. The good news is, it is not too late. Go to RebuildAmerica.com and sign the contract OR if that agenda is too broad go to Smiley and West, CBC, NAACP or the Urban League to sign on to the Black Agenda and let's confront the President with specifics. Only then will our needs be met.

He does not have to. He has the power of the bull-pulpit to broadly paint ideas and concerns to the American public. That is in part the power of the president.

People tell us to "stop begging for a handout" and "pull up your bootstraps". But whenever do we such, we get called racist. The goalpost keeps on being moved. Everyone wants to be Black people's friends until we try to cut our dependence on white society and become self-sufficient by building our own business communities. Case in point: The Black Wall Street, Rosewood, Greenwood, Harlem Renaissance.

They only love a Black person when we do what we're told like obedient little pets. They would NEVER treat gays, white women, or Jews that way.

And we still haven't gotten our reparations yet. We are not on equal economic footing with every other race. THAT is why a multicultural/multi-ethnic approach simply does not work. Black people will just go to the back of the line and end up at the table with an empty plate again.

Something has to give soon. {{-_-}}

If there were more jobs, we would have had them by now. Doesn't help that the only way for us to get jobs or get to a place where we can provide jobs is to beg you people for jobs first. If you want that to change, a little help is appreciated.

Besides, America got handouts from African slaves and Native Americans for hundreds of years. {{-_-}}

I am no fan of Obama but your assessment of him here is unfair to say the least. In addition your assessment of black America doesn't seem very fair either. The CBC is a racist organization meaning they exist to only help one specific race although they are elected by all races. There is no way to deny that and he is right to ignore them. I look around my neighborhood which is a reasonably affluent neighborhood and I see black families who are my friends and neighbors and who do not subscribe to that "we're all the same" mentality that for some reason black leaders insist on anymore. They are people who made and effort and succeeded and they are people who consider themselves Americans on an even level with whites. It seems to me that this collective mentality thing doesn't help matters

Yes and look where the individual mentality has taken the country. A Wall Street engineered economic collapse. A sweetly progressing libor scandal. I am not even going to get into institutionalized racism and the prison industrial complex aka the New Jim Crow.

Yeah why not look at where the group mentality has taken the black community. Gangs, entitlement, single parent, unwanted kids, highest unemployment, highest crime rate, murder rate, teen pregnancies, drop out rate, prison population, yeah you just keep listening to those black leaders and democrats. They've had 50 years, theirs must have been a long term plan

Actually, your logistics are wrong. The Congress has been the racist organization all along. The Congress has historically resisted any measure of progress. Do you realize the years of struggle to achieve voting and civil rights? Do you realize how many people died, in this modern era, to get those acts enacted?

To make a statement that the CBC is racist is the purest nonsense, when it is clearly demonstrable that the Congress has long been in opposition to the rights of Black citizens.

They are NOT African Americans if they are legal citizens. They are AMERICANS, who should get the same treatment as everyone else...no more or no less. Like Frederick Douglass said, "Don't treat black people any different than anyone else. If they fail, they fail." The only thing holding back black Americans is their own mindset. There is nothing they can't do today because of the color of their skin.

This is not a debate about semantics, i.e., African Americans vs Americans. And taking Frederick Douglas' words out of context to diminish and render insignificant the impact of the real challenges and concerns expressed by an entire race of people who are merely seeking representation by their elected officials does not augment your argument in the least. In fact it makes you appear less informed than you apparently want others to believe you are.

...on that note what race are you? Attention young black HuffPost bloggers...know that crooks are here to deceive you into believing they are black and speaking for you. I believe that African Americans particularly the younger ones are MORE INTELLEGENT than some of you bloggers give them credit for and that includes Dr. Watkins. Don't get bambozzled by the fringe right and the good ol' boys that are throwing hokey-puck in the game at this point. They are either seeking a victory for the TEA PARTY candidates or DEFEAT for President Obama. Don't allow your vote to be compromised by their personal agendas and deception. They are doing whatever they can to suppress the minority vote...and this article is just part of it. Obama/Biden 2012!

First they say Pres.Obama is not Black enough, he's not one of us, he's half White, and not vote for him to boot. Then to turn around and blame Pres. Obama for tricking us by not acting and doing Black is a Neg-geredly indeed. Your tongs should be dragged from your stinking lying mouths.Obama is not a King that can order Whites to hire Blacks. Like the man SAID get the Boots on that's a leader talking; that's right, that's what we had to do to win our Civil Rights. Pres. Obama is not a King, he cannot Order, Command, or Demand, the Steam Fitters Union to take African Americans into the Apprenticeship program.
African American's need leaders not cry baby finger pointing political mombo-jumbo talkers. People are afraid of the truth and some people play on that. All this is crap in comparison to what is about to befall this country that no damn Black or White president of people can do about it. If you are listening to the economist, "All we can do is ride this thing out, which may include printing money, but not Jobs." In time 3-4 years the economy will 'begin' come back.
No dam amount of Pres. Obama "simultaneously improving for whites," manipulating positioning African Americans is going to lift or rise Whites out of crap. Another thing we've always known; We are the First fired and the Last hired, not Obama or Romney can change that.

Well said! Well received! Lucky its not the time for a black female president. I'll return us back to the 50's. Lol.. Where it was about self respect. Determination. Initiative and education. Race relations was evil to bare. But To me the worst thing that ever happened to the black community was segregation welfare n Democrats! It took away our hard work ethics and independence. It gave us co-dependency and ghetto projects. Before that most black people owned their homes and businesses. Fathers raised their children n most women had children by 1 man. People were married. Not multiple baby mama's n multiple baby daddy's. The black family was stable n powerful. Race conditions was messed up. But it was almost unheard of in the 50's- 60's that a black man was in prison. When my grandfather died he had a Laundromat n 2 small convenient stores. My grandmother ran them until she died. When she died I watched my aunts n uncles sell their legacies for the BLING.. now the bling is gone. Just about every older couple had a mom n pop restaurant, laundry, store, mechanic shop or landscaping company. Now we WISH we could have our own small businesses, convenient stores or dry cleaners n landscaping, restaurants. We gave them to the asians, Mexicans n hinde and sikh ppl. Barack can't save ppl from themselves. He's not Jesus.
