Or..............it displays the difficulty and strange limitations of Spanish.

What she said is poetically interesting, yet strangely unclear in her meaning.

I take it she said almost literally, I cannot remember what it was to be Mexican.

- Yet the Spanish can have nuances, which influence meaning, that we simply cannot understand coming from English and German which are much more cut and dried.

Spanish revels in ambiguity, we detest it.

Yeah, a lot can be lost in translation or just wrongly translated especially from one language to another to another, it is the same with any language.

"And all this violence that's happening there, it's done with American arms.”

I'm no gun nut or IRA member but if the mexicans couldn't get American weapons they would get Ak47's or Saigas or whatever from other parts of the world. Nothing could stop weapons coming from other parts of the world into Mexico, there is little stopping that unlike we do here in the US.

That's a blunt statement. She could at least explain it a little. Why not? How old was she when she left Mexico? Has no family there?

Given that she's of Arab ancestry, I'm sure she felt more Lebanese than Mexican while growing up. Her childhood among the elite certainly didn't give her any insight on how ordinary Mexicans lived.

What an amazingly stupid thing to say. Just because you've become rich and famous is not an excuse to forget who you are and where you came from. What kind of person says something like that?

Umm...just about everyone who calls themselves Americans...everyone except Native Americans. You all are basically immigrants who came from somewhere else. Who knew?

People like Salma Haylek are amazing. She was born into a family of millionaires, and grew up being waited on hand and foot by peasant servants. She gets recognized for her talents and makes a small fortune in her own right. America and the American people made her what she is today by paying money to watch her performances.

So Salma shows her thanks and gratitude to America for making her internationally famous by claiming America is responsible for 30,000 Mexicans getting killed in drug wars. If it wasn't for those rotten Americans, Salma believes, those 30,000 people never would have never been killed.been killed. Hey Salma, those 30,000 people were killed by MEXICANS....not by Americans. Your own murderous, violent Mexican people killed every one of them. No American killed any of them.

And how do you know the weapons that killed them came from America. If you're going to shoot off your fat mouth blaming American guns, then you ought to stand up and offer evidence about where those weapons came from. So how about it, Salma, give us the evidence about the origin of those guns. I bet you can't do it because no one knows where they came from. Go connect with those wonderful Mexicans you love so much, and leave America......OK??

It's the lax firearms laws of America which supply weapons traffickers, criminals, and terror groups so easily.

Stop blaming America.  America is the greatest country in the world.  America does  more to help humanity and save lives around the world than all other nations combined.  America cured Polio in 1957 and found cures for hundreds of infectious diseases to help the world, and you sit there and all but declare America to be a bad, bad country.  According to you, everything bad in the world is America's fault.  Open your eyes and thank God you live in America....if you do.

It is also lax law enforcement in Mexico that causes all this violence, not to mention all the corruption in all levels of government, but hey, we have that here as well.

Hate...is how whites remind you of what race you are...maybe her Lebanese background had something to do with the loss of her Mexican heritage...Mother is Spanish and father is of Lebanese ancestry, actually she is not Mexican per se....but Mexican born.

I used to really like this actress but as time has passed she has dissapointed me. She part of the extreme wealth in Mexico and that country is very status consciene (like this country) and I she has not done much for the Latin community. Eva Longoria is doing great things for her people but not Salma.

She is also part Lebanese, so why hasn't she even acknowledged that and all Hispanics/Latinos can focus on her not having any memories of 'being Mexican'? I would say that is much more an insult to the Lebanese, to not even be mentioned. By the way define what 'being Mexican' means? Jose Antonio Vargas can 'Define American' for himself and all those DREAMers out there who also claim that, they too, do not have any connection to their homelands. So if she wants to be remembered for doing great things, why not do them for ALL peoples, and not just your own?

Because in all that I have seen she only talks about being Mexican, hence the conversation and the fact the article is discussing her Mexican roots.  Jose Antonio Vargas is from the Phillipines, which is NOT a place that in Arizona and other parts of this country is considered public enermy #1.  Let's face it... Mexicans are probably the most misunderstood and may I say hated nationality and all media is negative.  So when an individual such as Salma has the opportunity to dispel any negative ideas but does not, and makes a comment like she did, it may confirm ideas in my some ignorant minds.  This is not her responsibility but many individuals would appreciate it when they face daily racism.  You mentioned people doing great things for all people, I agree, but it's common for people to indentify from where they are from, like the recent Olympics.  I am third generation Mexican American in Arizona so I dont have the anxiety a lot of Mexicans have in this country, but I work in a mostly "white man"  industry where I had to at a very young age work harder than most because some thought I was fresh out of Mexico.

At least she's honest. It's better than her trying to over-compensate by proving she's Mexican enough.
