Yeah... because wheat, barley and rye are the only food sources of protein on this planet.
04:42 PM on 08/22/2012
Oh: sorry, let me rephrase:

A protein [exclusively from grain sources for the overly-pedantic]-free diet huh? well, ok.

I am so incredibly sorry, I hope you will find it within your heart to forgive me.

More people need to go Gluten -Free. It is the root cause for many disorders from diabetes to cancer and is constantly overlooked. The blood test measures the levels of antigens in the blood caused by Gluten from wheat, barley and rye. The scale is 100 to 400. Personally my test was over 570 and they still wanted to take a biopsy. My gut says anything over 150 with this blood test should seriously take Gluten out of their diet. It has been a life changing choice. For most of my life I had low iron and now my iron is just fine and I dropped over a 150 pounds and need to drop 80 more. I got fat on eating the very grains that were killing me. Try it for 6 months and see how you feel, don't take my word for it.

More power to you. Celiac disease was killing me. I was bone skinny and food was going right through my body. Doctors were dumbfounded. I was misdiagnosed twice. I'm so happy I finally got the right doctor who thought to test me for Celiac disease. I'm so glad that awareness is spreading and there is more options in the gluten free food isle lately.

Gluten free diet is silly for losing weight. Gluten is one of the proteins in wheat. It's not protein one should be avoiding to lose weight. A reduced carbohydrate diet would make much more sense. Carbs are in all grains and baked goods. Reduce those things to lose weight.

People are more interested in fad diets and what celebrities are doing than actual science. Sadly.

You obviously don't have a problem with gluten. I get fat on gluten and unhealthy and depressed and feel generally horrid. Gluten free diets are not silly for losing weight.... do some real research, please!

You gain weight by eating too many calories, of which wheat/gluten contain tons of because they are very calorie dense, especially in carbohydrates. Replacing calorie dense food (wheat based) with calorie sparse, yet filling food (vegetables) will obviously make you lose weight. Maybe gluten plays a role in your mental states as described, but total calories ingested along with your big 3 macronutrient percentage splits (fat, protein, carbohydrates) are the only things that matter when structuring your diet to lose weight/gain weight. Also, I'm speaking of diet only, obviously exercise plays a role :-).

Have you tried quinoa? It's gluten free, yet it is still calorie dense/carbohydrate dense. If by, your theory, you replaced gluten based food (i.e. pasta) with quinoa (non-gluten), I guarantee your weight would stay the same, if portions were kept the same.

Was she still having corn? Was she still having grains? If so, she didn't go on a complete gluten free diet and these other irritants caused her to keep the weight on.

Thanks HP for helping to perpetuate the myth that going gluten-free helps you lose weigh. It doesn't matter what you say in the last paragraph, the damage has already been done with your AOL-ish headline. Leave the gluten-free to us celiacs...please. We need it to stay alive.

Here's a whole conversation on the Lady Gaga gluten-free saga: http://glutendude.com/celebrities/lady-gaga-may-be-gluten-free-but-baby-i-was-born-this-way/

"Leave the gluten-free to us celiacs...please. We need it to stay alive." - As far as I'm concerned, the more people that get on board the better. If people keep buying gluten free food that widens the demand for it and one day they will sale gluten free doughnuts, cookies and granola bars (for example) at every convenience store and I won't have to drive out of my way to a specialty grocery store to get the gluten free breakfast bars, pizzas and basic food needs for myself and my daughter every week.

Thank you GlutenDude for trying to set the facts straight. Between 0.5 and 1.0 percent of people in the United States are sensitive to gluten due to Celiac disease (http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/celiac/index.aspx). Without Celiac there is little science to suggest any health benefits from a gluten free diet. In many cases the opposite is true. Individuals who don't eat gluten often times gain weight and miss essential nutrients. I say eat what you want but making fake, trendy claims doesn't help anyone out.

whatever, she's gorgeous and talented and doesn't need to change a thing.

Good, she needs to look more like a rocker --- like Gwen Stefanni.

Lady Gags has some meaty/cheesy looking hips.

I agree Gags, tighten it up for your fans (which I am so NOT one of).
04:05 PM on 08/22/2012
If you're not even a fan, why did you even bother to read/comment on this article?

To say that someone needs to lose weight because they have "cheesy looking hips" is disgusting and you do nothing but contribute to the distortion of perception of women's bodies in America and elsewhere.
To say someone needs to look like someone else goes against Gaga's philosophies of being an individual. Maybe you should try it some time instead of trying to be somebody else. Get over yourself and get a life.
