Unfortunately, if she indeed was on Prozac one of the most serious side effects of many antidepressants are THOUGHTS of suicide and homicide.

Wow, this poor woman clearly had problems. I feel for her and and her child. May they both rest in peace.

Was she schizophrenic? Seems like it. Poor baby, poor mentally ill woman. :/ They should've noticed the red flags & kept her in a hospital.

Where was the omnipresent, omnipotent God? Oh yeah. Doesn't exist.

It appears to me you just acknowledge God and no one had to force you into doing so. You just felt the need to. Oh yeah....Thanks for the capital G.

He "acknowledged" him as NOT EXISTING, and the capital G was part of that sarcasm. (Why exactly would *you* even try to thank other people for such a reference? Only you-know-who would have reason to do that.)

Its really sad to see how the government and the system has failed not only the child but the mother as well. We have our late former President Regan to thank for all of this when he set the precedent to discontinue the funding for mental health causing many mental health facilities to close and causing the mentally ill incarcerated to be let loose on our streets. It is time for the government to take some responsibility in this. Instead taking care of problems on the other side of the world, how about diverting some of that much needed cash here to take care of our own Americans who are in need. Let the world take care of their own problems. Veterans coming home without any real guarantees of assistance after serving and risking their lives for their country. Homeless people being forgotten and left to fend themselves. The government refuses to close our borders so that we can stop taking care of the people other countries need to care for themselves. We just cannot fix the entire world's problems. Hell Charity starts at home before you take care of outsiders.

You are blaming Reagan for a 33-yo woman killing her child? Really? Do you know how many years have passed when mental health facilities could have been restored? Unless this woman had been locked up and been forced to undergo sterilization, how could the government prevent her killing this baby?
03:54 AM on 08/25/2012
First of all, take a chill pill. Secondly, The mental health system has been steadily getting placed on the chopping block when it comes to making decisions about the budget whether locally. Perhaps if you would have kept up with the news through the years you would know that. Thirdly, I never blamed Regan for this child's demise. Get your head out of your kooloo. Fourth, America is not a dictatorship you cannot infringe on a woman's reproductive rights to force women to undergo sterilization. The government could have done plenty by releasing the federal money to make available more trained personnel not only in Mental Heath but to train DCFS personnel to more effectively to recognize mental issues, better psych meds research/development of more effective meds, and more available mental health services/facilities. You want to understand the impact that has been going on steadily through the years, start with Reagan & proceed to the current. This is what happens when uneducated people like yourself try to read more into something than it really is. What I stated is that the system failed this family...PLAIN & SIMPLE. BOTTOM LINE!! Her mental condition regardless of the diagnosis is an ILLNESS that was not properly treated or taken seriously.

As much as I hate to admit it, liberals played a part in closing mental health in the interest of personal freedom and dignity for the mentally ill. It's true that many were committed who shouldn't have been, but how many tens or hundreds of thousands are now not committed who should be?

It's due to our dysfunctional legal system. CPS is by far the most ineffective. They take the child from his or her home, but usually for only a short time before returning the child back home to his or her abusive parent. And sadly, the cycle repeats itself until something tragically happens to the child. That poor baby should not have been returned to his mother at all. They should have put him up for adoption because there are many families with or without children of their own who probably would have adopted him and taken him in as their own. His life should not have ended this way at all, but alot of the times, the courts grant these unstable parents the right to take back their children. OMG, that makes me sick.
11:45 AM on 08/27/2012
Well the thing about it Patricia, the family has a plan that they have to work for the State once a child has been removed. Once the plan is completed and things appear to be satisfactory to the judge, then the child is returned to the family. Most plans are pretty extensive. There are workers who check and evaluate the home situation once everything checks out. In most cases there are other agencies that are placed in the home as well, such as mental health case managers etc. in such cases of mental health situations. The State or CPS has no way of knowing this woman was going to go off her meds or what ever was going on with her. Although my understanding is that there was a history of mental illness with this woman for a long time. CPS has guidlines that they have to follow. I just hope they were following ALL of them in this case. I see a law suit coming on!!!!

*sigh*. So sad. Is it just me or does it seem like the dispatcher wasted a lot of time talking? Hopefully that poor child wasn't suffering during that time.

Mental problem abound and their effects are staggering as seen here. However, when I was reading the 911 dispatcher report I was wondering why they didn't do the same in the Trayvon Martin case. Deceit and duplicity strikes again.

Clearly, this woman suffered from more than depression...unless she was in a substance induced psychotic state. As someone who initially wanted to be a social worker I learned very quickly how UNDERPAID and OVERWORKED they are. I couldn't bare the thought of being responsible for helping children that due to a caseload busting at the seams I couldn't help effectively.

This child was failed on so many levels...let me be the first to say cutting funds for government programs does not help prevent this.

Whenever I hear about the death or abuse of a child, I want to puke. I think about this poor, beautiful little baby who was entrusted to this, obviously, mentally ill, drug addicted mother, and now he's gone. My heart cries when I think of the countless women who would give anything to become a mother, yet women like her get the chance, and she and the system fail these poor, helpless babies.

Shanda, girl! I wanted to be a social worker at one time too, but after becoming a CASA/guardian ad litem and meeting/talking to the social workers and seeing how overworked and exhausted they are, I said, "NO MA'AM!" It's grueling.

two of my friends are social workers. some social workers are handling 10 or more cases when they are not suppose to and also try to follow the law even if they knowingly when a child goes back to abusive home, the child may not survive.
Not all foster care are good, the child goes goes to foster cares all screwed up and they come out more screwed up. I wouldn't being a foster mother.
