Stop calling animals "it"! HE was a captive wild animal who behaved quite normally under abnormal circumstances. Tragic.

I agree 100% with you. I keep wondering why they had to kill this tiger. My condolences to the keeper's family; but, you can't blame an animal for doing what it does naturally. This isn't a pet that went wild, it was a tiger doing what tigers do. I don't want to second guess; but, I think a tranquilizer dart would of been a better choice.

That's right, kill the endangered tiger and put it out of its misery. Zoos are evil displays of non-human species for human entertainment anyway. Besides, I need a new rug.

Very tragic incident that could have avoided just by being careful and showing due deligence towards ones job. A similar incident happened at Florida zoo a few years ago when the keeper was mauled to death by a White Tiger...the Tiger was not put down!

An armed citizen uses a GUN to stop a killer before the police arrive on scene and no one seems to think that is relevant......

This was the zoo's director, a person who deals with large predators and must be able to deal with a situation like this. It would be surprising if he did not have some means to kill an animal to protect humans.
09:51 AM on 08/26/2012
Not sure where you got an armed citizen. The story states...... the zoo's director managed to kill the tiger by climbing onto the storage building and shooting it through a skylight using a high-caliber rifle.

I feel bad for the keeper and the tiger, the tiger was just being a "tiger" and the humans were just being "humans".

What a tragedy and senseless loss of live, both human and animal. At least there was only one human killed. As for mistakes, in an era of electronics and better monitoring, why wasn't there an alarm on the gate or a better locking mechanism. There is NO excuse for a wild animal being able to escape!

My best guess is human error, and so very unfortunate a person lost their life and a magnificent creature was killed, although I'm sure the zoo did what had to do, but still very sad anyway you look at it.

She'll never make that mistake again.Maybe she lost some respect for the power of that animall and forgot to check the gate.

And, thanks God (the zoo keeper also), the might beatiful tiger who lost the respect by men was also eliminated.

Many people that are attracted to a zooeeper's job are romantics .... while the job requires a perfect attention to details and a person that thinks quickly during crisis situations... and it is unfortunate that the only way to find out if they have what it takes is fatal for some . Even when you have what it takes your luck can run out ... nothing you can do about that but accept it . For her family the main thing to remember is that She liked her job and wanted to be there , and that she passed doing what she loved ... a good way to go

A double tragedy -- a dedicated zookeeper dies and a magnificent animal is put down. A very sad day.
