Camels, alpacas, and llamas also do not eat their placentas.

I was pleasantly surprised to find out this piece was done with a more critical and scientific perspective than the majority of articles I personally come across featuring this topic. When you look past all of the hype and claims and focus in on the research and evidence, it is difficult not to agree with the following from the author of this article, "What only seems to matter is that they expected it to work before they did it. This is a classic formula for a placebo effect -- an improvement based on expectation, not on pharmacological mechanisms."

I'm a vet tech, so I've seen placenta-eating a number of times. I can't help but find it disgusting when dogs and cats do it, even though I know there are valid evolutionary reasons for them to do so. There are no valid evolutionary reasons for humans to eat their placentas; we don't typically have predators roaming the halls of hospitals sniffing out fresh meat. We now know better, or at least we should.

This is just another move in the parenting wars (see the Orange Slice moms column today) among those who don't have enough to worry about - how do you out-parent placenta eating?

We usually eat placenta on Meatless Mondays.

The kids don't care for it, so we let them eat Cap'n Crunch for dinner, which they think is kewl.

No, it's really meatless. My life coach told me so.

What is going on is the celebrities who brought that into the spotlight have too much time on their hands. And the one who listen to hem as well.

I really don't see any problem with the practice. If it translates to health benefits then by all means......
08:27 PM on 09/17/2012
Oh, come on! Why don't you just eat your own arm?

No, but I have been known to partake in cunnilingus and was told my performance was satisfying. Eating a placenta can't be all that bad as dogs do it all the time and I'm definitely a DAWG.

A fad, a craze, a bit of nonsense.

Has not anyone realized that mammals (other than sea and humans) eat their placenta to NOT attract other animals to the scent of raw flesh, in order to protect their newborn(s) from being eaten by other animals in the wild? it could have been in our DNA also, but we have evolved out of it.

My dog whelped a litter of puppies and she ate all the placental materials. Then she tried to eat one of the pups that was stillborn. Don't let the doulas and midwives hear about this!
