Well at least he's not hungry any more. I think he's quite happy to be in jail, just look at his mug shot. It's pretty sad when it's come down to people actually being happy to go to jail because they're living on the streets. Inexcusable in a country like this. There are more homes sitting empty due to foreclosures, etc. than there are homeless people in this country. Astounding.

I am the first person to defend animals, but I feel very torn reading this. If he really was hungry and trying to feed himself, I can understand his actions. I think hunger can make people do horrible things. Most people in this country have not experienced real hunger...thank goodness.

Ironic that a man arrested for strangling a pelican is a dead ringer for the frontman of the Counting Crows.

Guy spends hours trying to catch fish... Brown pelican (ironically resembling the man himself, reminding him of his brother that he caught with his wife in his life before his breakdown) swoops down and gobbles up fish he had been trying to catch with no problem. Man goes psycho tries to kill pelican (brother) and get fish(wife) back... "And now you know the REST of the story..Paul Harvey Good Day!"

The pelican must've made fun of his hair.

in long island new york there is a rampant overpopulation of canada geese. they cause alot of health concerns as well as '' birdstrikes'' in new yorks laguardia and jfk airports. the defecate all over playgrounds, lawns and even cemetaries. this is only their natural behavior and none of their fault but with so much rain here and grass and no natural predators they are out of control. i once suggested that instead of jokingly that since their are so many poor and hungry families and and alot of these geese are killed as nuicence wildlife why cant they be butchered and cooked for the hungry. maybe i was half joking in the end. who knows.

Your idea would work as long as wildlife agency are the ones taking the geese. In lower population areas of the country, they have special urban hunts to get the populations under control. In New York where people are not used to controlled hunts netting them and taking them away would probaly be a better idea. 2 geese in the spring can raise 10 or more chicks leading to alot of geese by Summer.

All I know....is learn how to make a stone oven....nothing better than oven baked goose.....and those Canadian geese are pretty tasty stuff. Get you some wild vegetable(cat tail bulbs) for mashed spuds and the feast is on.

The birds life was short, one could say it was "Pelican Brief".

At least he will be fed in jail if they keep him in for the full 60 days.
10:53 PM on 09/09/2012
oh please the poor guy was hungry, so he had to take measures into his own hands, this happens in the wild all of the time, it shouldn't be any different because it was in a populated area; if i had to feed my famiily i would do the same thing, how is this different from harpooning a fish in the ocean and eating it ?? isnt that killing the fishe too ??

Aha! The fish aren't "protected" by the government, like this pelican. Some things you can kill, others you can't.

food banks, churches, there are a lot of ways to provide for your family rather than going "Rambo".
