Why not start with Chicago? Killings weekly, monthly with drug cartel money funding the gang-bangers and spreading into the heartland of the country. Teachers striking and now facing retaliation from the mayor and board of education - punishing the teachers, closing schools and in reality doing nothing more than punishing the students and families.

Want a taget city? Chicago

come on, everybody in the hood wants to be a "gangsta".

The two latest HP articles that come to mind are the 20 year old gangsta drunk and drive and crahses to death 20 seconds after tweeting about it.

Just yesterday, a wannabe gangsta pointing his shotgun from his porch in Detroit at the Google Street Map car.

Maybe instead of chasing the Gangsta Fantasy why not chase another fantasy like... (fill in). Now that would curb the violence.

I worked in the inner city for years. I wish you the best young man...I'll just wish you the best and keep my more cynical (although realistic) thoughts to myself.

Thanks for the positive comment (and for withholding the cynicism, which doesn't help anything.) I think it's the first positive thing I've read in the comments. I see this problem largely caused by youth unemployment, not to mention parental unemployment.

Thank you for the afffirmation, ma'am. I see the problem as a lack of parental involvement.

Forgive the addendum, please. I am reminded of a situation I read about regarding elephants in India, which I find analogous: A number of adolescent male elephants were having a great time trashing villages just for fun. There were no adult male elephants in their herd (forgive me that I don't know the proper name for a bunch of elephants). The park rangers transfered a number of adult male elephants from another reserve to then one where the adolescents were causing problems and....bingo!... the problem ceased. The adolescents NEEDED adult males to kick a little rear, and teach them how to be adults..

While I will vote for POTUS, I am not satisfied with the feminist tone of his campaign. I am tired of hearing about women's issues, as if they are disconnected from what men and boy's go through. This has been a big failure of his presidency and of the Democratic party at large AND the feminists agenda. To be clear, I support abortion rights and every other Civil Rights issue relative to the female experience: always have. What about us, are all we are good for is protecting the country, going to war after war after after war. Only to come home to the expectation that I must then meet all of the expectations of fatherhood or person hood and masculinity in a country that appreciates me in empty words, but no job? I watched my father( Korea) and my brother( Vietnam) (and I'm sure there were uncles in other wars) go to war to protect their families, serve their country and for what; to be ridiculed and forgotten, thrown in jail because of a bogus war on drugs which is really a war on men of color,or get locked away forever for stealing a piece of bread because of the immoral three strikes laws? What about us? Isn't my vote as worth as much as her's?Isn't my sacrifice as worthy her's? Yeah, let's have another article on Chris Brown and Rihanna, that ought a help.

Veterans' issues are front and center as well in this administration. I don't know how you could miss that.

I was going to react to your criticism of the "feminist tone" of Obama's campaign. But your whole message needs to be read. You're right! I'm appalled at how many black men are in prison. And today I'm disgusted with the Republican Senators who left Washington after they voted down the jobs bill for Veterans. Bah!

PLEASE pass this on to someone who can help. This a special needs black male who is lost. Apparently no one wants to get the word out because he doesn't meet the norm for missing persons stories. I wasn't sure if you got my last post. I apologize for the intrusion, but I'm running out of ideas to help get this man found. It's been 6 weeks since he went missing and I'm afraid for him. Please forward to someone who might be able to help. Thank you.

Improved education? Better job opportunites? Sure, but unil we legalize and develop some controls that eliminate the enoromous profit motives associated with drugs, prostitution, gambeling and other human vices that are currently illegal in this country, you will continue to see an escalation of lethal violence among warring factions over the control and distribution of those products and services.

Hey, if you outlawed the sale of sugar in the U.S., it wouldn't be long until people were killing each other and going to jail over the profits to be made on a black market for sugar!

From the border violence to even our small communities, this is just one more example of the lack of basic common sense our leaders and many of our people exhibit by treating the symptoms of human frailties linstead of accepting their realities ... much as we were forced to do relative to the sale and distribution of alcohol.

This situation could be solved with the stroke of a pen while great new businesses would be legally created to provide a million or more jobs if our people would just support it. Plus, half the prisons we so proudly fill with youngsters could be closed and turned into schools!

A voice in the wilderness. America is at a crossroad. When you are fighting to care for and protect your family you have little time to devote to self improvement. Then "I have a dream" loses it's meaning. We can continue to have the largest obscene military budget the world has ever know supporting corporate America overseas or we can reduce it, freeing money to be used in America for the 47%. We could create manufacturing jobs in America by offering incentives. We could decrease poverty by educating our children and providing meaningful employment. When individuals are struggling to survive they have little time to dedicate to the future. I have never understood why Americans find it easier to see problems overseas in other societies and ignore the plight of Americans on Indian Reservations, Barrios, Slum Areas, or Economically depressed areas of a city or state. A country that could land a man on the moon and a rover on mars can solve our problems at home if we had the desire.

You can't subtract from the fulfillment of The Dream. It's done and we are at 'the mountain top' unless having a Black president don't mean anything to you. What part of the Dream do You think is not fulfilled?

False. Total crap.

Reality = Poverty is often used as an excuse for those who CHOOSE to commit crimes.

My evidence: The vast majority of poor people are neither evil nor criminals.

"I marched because the shootings and deaths of our young people this summer has not just been in my old neighborhood in Queens, but in communities all across our urban landscape." Russell Simmons.
Founder, GlobalGrind.com. At least you are bringing attention to problems that many are too 'politically correct' to even talk about. Democrats ignore the problems. If a Republican or Independent mention the problems they are labled as racist. I do not have any answers but I believe the number one problem is no fathers at home with too many young ladies are married to the government. Making babies has become a part time business. Hope you find success for a very difficult and important issue for all young people..not just those in the metropolitian areas !?

Another feel good.. "blame it on the victims" speech..

Drug Wars since Nixon, and a do for self speech is supposed to negate the atrocities that the "For Profit" Prison System has wreaked on the community. Your lving in a fantasy world if you think ANYTHING wll change unless you address overcrowded prisons, and our drug laws...

seriously Russell, how about you take a stroll by yourself on the southside of Chicago, If he has worked towards curbing urban violence, he has failed miserably and his poor job creation performance in minority communities is appalling. I cannot see why people continue to blindly back someone who has 0 results for black and latinos other than back door amnesty.
