The Church has learned a lot since WWII. While Pius XII tried to do his best through the halls of diplomacy, John Paul II was out in the public square facing down communism along with reagan and Thatcher. Although i do not always agree with Benedict he is out there trying to defuse what could be the biggest explosion the world has ever known. Thank you Pope at least this world has one leader. I wish you had a Reagan and Thatcher to help you now.

The Pope makes me absolutely ill. While he runs about in his gold and designer gowns, eats the best bood, stays in top shelf accomodations, lives the "good life," children across the world are dying every 15 seconds because they lack clean water to drink or suffiecient food to eat. This man is a bottom feeding loathsome creature.
09:05 PM on 09/14/2012
Well at least he is going out on a limb for his Christian flock, giving them consolation and support. The Christians there in communion with him are very grateful. Just as your are probably pleased at finding "flaws" in the pope, no doubt you are just as displeased at finding virtues and good will.

Yep, then the radical christians will shoot him for being to consilatory.

Galileo cracked the case these were not fixed stars but planetary bodies .
With this observation, The Earth, around which everything revolved. An alternate idea ha Galileo's critics decried his new theory as a dethronement of man (and God), and following the shattering of the celestial spheres came the shattering of Galileo.

In 1633 he was hauled before the Catholic Church's Inquisition, broken of spirit in a dungeon, and forced to scrawl his aggrieved signature on an earth-centered recantation of his work.
Galileo might have considered himself lucky. Years earlier, another Italian, Giordano Bruno, had also suggested that Earth was not the center, and in February 1600 he was dragged into the public square for his heresies against the Church. His captors, afraid that he might incite the crowd with information and eloquence, attached an iron mask to his face to prevent him from speaking. He was burned alive at the stake, his eyes peering from behind the mask at a crowd of onlookers who wanted to believe they were the center of all things.

WHY was Bruno wordlessly exterminated? How did a man with Galileo's genius find himself in shackles on a dungeon floor? Because not everyone appreciates a radical shift of world view.

"He was burned alive at the stake."

Yes, and our greatest president, George Washington, supported Virginia law -- for public order, good governance, and for the welfare of society -- which stated that slaveholders could abuse or ever murder their slaves in punishing misbehavior and still avoid legal repercussions. Slaves were abused regularly -- morally, sexually, and legally. That was the thinking of the time in the early period of our country. It is tragic just as the church supported the burning alive of Bruno, believing it for the better of society. But we have moved beyond those time periods. (Our first president even insisted that overseers track slaves closely during workdays that could stretch up to 16 hours in the hot sticky summertime.)

The Pope is a great man. Although i don't always agree with him, there is not another person on the planet who could better help calm this situation. Mitt Romney would not last 5 minutes. Obama not much longer. Not Hillary, not the head of the UN certainly not the heads of any other religions. God bless this Pope. You are doing the best that can be done.

The death penalty was imposed on a wide variety of crimes in this era, but witchcraft in particular was punished by death on the basis of Exodus 22:18: "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live" and Leviticus 20:27: "A man also or woman that hath a familiar spirit, or that is a wizard, shall surely be put to death: they shall stone them with stones." The heretics who were the earlier targets of the Inquisition were almost never executed at first. They typically had a chance to repent and submit to the Church. Thank you SEEESUS

To Donutwizard, Maybe you think that Lebanon is like the other Arabic Countries and I am really sure that all what you know is what you hear on the news in USA. I would like to teach you about Lebanon. I am Lebanese Maronite Catholic. One of the old rites in the Catholic Church. There are 4 Saints in Lebanon so far from the Maronite. Lebanon was mentioned in the Old Testament many and many times. The first Miracle Jesus made was in South Lebanon. We as Christians suffered a lot from all the International Politics as well as the Arab Politics.... We fought a lot and against Muslims since ever... Also we fought the International politics (they wanted to kick us outside Lebanon so the Palestinian take Lebanon as their country and Jews take Isreal), but guess what we fought the Palestinian and this cost us a lot of blood, tears, and suffering but as Christians and true beleivers we carried our cross and we are ready to carry it again and again and again. In Lebanon yes, there are good Christians and good Muslims, also bad Christians and bad Muslims. It is the same everywhere.... You have no idea the relation we have with The Holy Father and the Catholic Church...Go to Lebanon or go online and read about the Holy Valley in North Lebanon and read also about the History of the Maronite.

Christian Lebs (i.e. real Lebs) rock like a quarry : ) You were on the brink of having your country stolen from you, and yet thanks to God and the virgin you can come and go as you please; something Christians in other countries can only dream of. God bless Lebanon. I'm with you; I wish people realized it was and is in fact, the oldest democracy in the Middle East (but shhhhhhh! apparently it's still a secret).

It is incredible that human beings continue to believe in sky dieties when zero evidence exists to show any of these gods intervening on anyone's behalf. They simply never show up. It is humans killing humans in the "name" of gods, these humans supposedly knowing what the gods want and think.

On one hand the Pope was rather brave making this trip right now. Especially considering that the film that caused these violent protests was made by anti-Muslim Egyptian Coptic Christians who just happened to be living in the US and the violence is mis-directed at Americans.
The Pope said "Let me assure you that I pray especially for the many people who suffer in this region," Well that is a good thing , but when is he going to come out and offer prayers for the thousands of children who suffered abuse at the hands of Pedophile Catholic Priests all Europe and America?
11:07 PM on 09/14/2012
You must have either missed or been too ignorant to read a newspaper during the MANY times when he appologized and prayed for the victims...repeatedly...in several countries. A simple google search will give you this very needed piece of information (although I doubt you will be moved by it, since your clear hatred will most likely blind you to facts) Even though there is not one single case of cover-up that he is personally responsible for, he has done more to correct the damage than any other church organization, including Jews, Buddhits and Mohammedans. And yes, they have their cases too.

In an upated story intoday's HuPo authorities have identified a self-described Coptic Christian living in California as the key figure behind the inflammatory film. Stop spreading your anti-semetic hatred and catch up with reality. The man responsible for the film, who is a Coptic Christian was taken into custody tand questioned by Federal authorities in LA over night..You sem to want it to be a Jew and wont accept that original info was incorrect..
