Yes, the Republican's would like you to believe this is a major problem so you won't notice when they give a massive tax cut to the very, very wealthy. They want to start a cut-off income limit for unemployment insurance and they will lower that limit until anyone who makes over $20,000 doesn't qualify and then they will eliminate the program! Republican's love to use smoke and mirrors to promote their agenda of eliminating all the safety nets for the 99% and then give tax cuts and subsidies to the 1%
06:58 PM on 10/02/2012
20,000? Huh? I am allowed to make $30 a week (yep) before my UI benefits start being reduced. For every dollar I make over 30, I lose 1:1 on my benefit (a whopping $240 before taxes). That is GROSS, not net. So, in AZ, the minimum wage is $7.65. If I work 40 hours at minimum wage, my GROSS is $306. I am allowed $30, bringing my calculated wage to $276. This reduces my $240/week to $0 because I am too rich.

This welfare, as some care to liken UI to, is not making anyone comfortable, let alone rich.

Millionaires pay more than their fair share of the taxes that go to unemployment benefits.
The top 5% of earners pay about 60% of all federal taxes collected but they earn far less than 60% of the money so they overpay.
If you have a retiremnt account you benefit from the capital gains rate . Investment is risky . If you work x hrs your employer is required to pay you sum Y but if you invest in stocks and bonds you can lose everything and capital losses are not close to fully deductible . Also if you buy a house or stock in 1975 and now it is worth four times as much it isnt really worth four times as much because of inflation.

I can absolutely believe this. The looting of the middle and working classes by the fortunate and the privileged has been going on since post WW2. It's just accelerated a bit over the past 31 or so years.

Here's the interview with David Cay Johnston on his book Free Lunch: How the Wealthiest Americans Enrich Themselves at Government Expense (And Stick You with the Bill) http://goo.gl/gvgYq

So... its ok for the rich to take take take, but when someone who was not given a silver spoon needs that's not American... I get it now. Its perpetual opposite day in America.
06:37 PM on 10/02/2012
How is it that "the rich" take, take take? They already pay a majority of federal income taxes. The U.S. has a very progressive tax system. The majority of the "rich" have woked very hard their entire life to get where they are. They have educated themselves, worked hard, raised families, donated to charity etc., etc.. Most were not born with a "silver spoon". They are good hard working successful people. I guess that is something to be denigrated in this country these days. Shame on the political elite and media for fomenting class warfare in this country.

Lol.. that is so wrong.. And whoever said that eliminating this would do nothing ? How do you have the audacity to claim for unemployment if you make that much money.. it is not a problem of economics, it is of moral values or lack thereof..
06:20 PM on 10/02/2012
Even the 1% should be repulsed by this. No shame.
06:19 PM on 10/02/2012
I don't agree with this argument. If you qualify for unemployment, then you qualify for it no matter what your income. It's not like if you are a millionaire you are going to get more unemployment. There is a maximum no matter how much you make, and it's not very livable. As long as you are paying into unemployment it should be there for you no matter what your income.
06:23 PM on 10/02/2012
broken record, here. The EMPLOYER pays unemployment. not the worker. the millionaire wall street executive would get his unemployment paid by his employer. he pays nothing. Just like the 8 buck an hour guy who works at McDonalds. He pays nothing, either.

everyone pays. but the worker pays indirectly.

"The EMPLOYER pays unemployment. not the worker."

Doesn't matter. See Krugman (or any other introductory econ text book) for an explanation of tax incidence.

Too bad you weren't even smart enough to get into an introductory economics class.

Well, that's a fair statement. I'm just not sure why they would file when they don't need the extra income. That's the part that confuses me.
11:04 PM on 11/09/2012
You can have a million dollars in assets, but that doesn't mean you have a million dollars in your pocket.  Also, just because you are a millionaire it doesn't mean that you are good with money and living within your means.  I don't think a millionaire should get unemployment over someone who cannot eat, but I believe in fairness, if you lose your job through no fault of your own, you lose your job.

Well, considering that the majority of red states take in more federal money than they give back and that is reversed forthe  majority of blue states....I'm going to guess Republicans and conservatives.
But if you have evidence to the contrary then post it.

Surely eligibility for unemployment benefits should be tied to assets as well as income.

If you're unemployed, but have more than $1 million in the bank, how much is an unemployment cheque helping, really?

And then Republican's will lower the eligibility amount to $15,000, which they will right before they end the program.
06:10 PM on 10/02/2012
WHERE are all you coming up with the idea YOU are paying unemployment insurance out of your paychecks? It isn't so. It has never been that way. The employers pays. Well, now the employer and the Federal Government pays (on extensions).

I suggest you take a look at your stub. Law requires that a breakdown of all deductions be made available to you on your paycheck stub. LEARN what you are paying out. LEARN what is pre- and post-tax deductions. If you have been going all you life assuming your employer is treating you fairly, you will be shocked. And if you see OTHER as a deduction, they better damn well explain what that is. For all you know your employer is charging you 5 bucks to print up your check and stub.

If their only income has been from investments, then they haven't paid any SS or Medicare taxes.... Even if they had a job.... they might have "foregone a salary," which is a great marketing tool, but the reality is, it is a way to take their "salary" through stock options instead (and pay 15% max in tax).

I actually agree, but it just shows the greed and how even the very wealthy take what they can from the government, in fact, I believe they take more than they should, or should I say, don't contribute like they should...

after you reach a certain income level, the government stops deducting for social security and medicare.

during the clinton administration that cap was raise from a (measly) 80k a year to, i think, 120k or something.

lower income people actually contribute more into the system.
06:44 PM on 10/02/2012
Medicare is uncapped. Lower income people pay virtually no federal tax. How do they contribute more into the system?

Uhhmmm..yeah not really, anyone reaching the cap will stop paying. Remember, all reaching that cap are not millionaires, they are often in high cost areas like NY or Silicon Valley and don't have to make a million a year to reach that cap, far from it.

The funny thing is that there are probably 2 MILLION people who are receiving unemployment while working under the table, too.

The 2,000 are receiving it legally because"thems the rules", though I have to agree that here is a place where means tests could apply

Wrong, in most states you HAVE to PROVE employment. If you are paid under the table, you receive no benefits. If your employers does not pay into unemployment, you do not get into the program. What is the deal with you sheep defending the rich like someday they will invite you to dinner and present you with a check for all you're hard work pandering for them?
