Nice try. You column pretends to deal in specifics, but dwells in generalizations. What I get a sense of is that you are angry that Mitt performed well at the debate, that he made O look like an empty suit, and that he did not fulfill your liberal idea of what a 'mean' GOP candidate is. You say you are a 'Historian," in what sense are you a historian? Do you teach? If you teach, do you use the same awkward tactics to get your students to believe what you do? Just curious.

You really believe that was the new and improved Tea Party Mitt loving and repealing Obamacare on day one?On day one he will be on his way to Canada with his dog on the roof.

I do not even know how to respond to your silly claim.

Having snagged the nomination by pandering to the tea party and neo-cons, he's now cheerfully tossing them over the cliff and laughing all the way to, he hopes, the white house.

Like Obama tossed his long time friend and mentor over the cliff? Charming.

Romney has no convictions. What is a conviction .. "a firmly held belief". Romney has changed his positions so, so many times ... he has no firmly held beliefs. This is not a trait you want in a candidate because you have no idea what he's going to do when he gets elected. People wake up!

Willard "Mitt" Romney = Mr. Etch-A-Sketch! And if enough folks believe his lies, he could just win and we will all be in deep kimschi!
11:40 AM on 10/06/2012
As a cynical observer, I have to admit that Romney's performance was dazzling! He lied convincingly and continuously. Unfortunately, the performance was so good that the American populace is buying it.

The real issue is that Obama was really absent at this debate. My scream at the TV was " Obama.. Wake up!"

Lehrer's performance was poor at best. He allowed himself to be bullied by Romney.

Since in our system, style trumps substance, Romney won.

yes..but in your system...you...does style trump substance?...that what you base your vote on..

romney did worse then lose..he lied to the audience and became whatever he needed to become

that's worrisome in this great country
04:48 PM on 10/06/2012
No, Romney does not get my vote based on his lies.

The points I am trying to make are:

Obama should have expected this and been prepared to respond to it vigorously.

There are many people in this great country who will give their vote to Romney based on his performance. I do not like it but it is true.

I hope that someone on Obama's campaign is reading all this and we see a more dynamic Obama again.

Thank you Mr McElvain...let us hope the televised pundits (maddow, matthews, fineman) etc can see with such clarity the metamorphosis of romney....a man who without a hesitation, can change his positions and lie with such ease he brings morphing or shape changing to a skill level only a gifted actor can admire..

What is truly remarkable is that any voter believes anything Romney says. He's a salesman who will tell you anything to make the sale, but we should know that the spiel is false and the product won't live up to his hype. If you look at his choice for VP and the interests of his multi-millionaire backers, that will tell you what he'll do. It certainly won't be what he said he'd do in this debate. No wonder President Obama was limited in response to Romney's ruse -- he couldn't comprehend that most people wouldn't catch on. Thank you, Mr McElvaine!

Well, sales of bad product is, after all the deregulation, one of the specialties of the Republican
party. Mitt comes to town with his brightly painted wagon selling laudanum to the ladies and "vigor" patent medicines to the men. You see that crowd standing there listening to him? They're still stuck back in the eighteen hundreds.

When I watched the "spirited" and now infamous video of then Senator Obama addressing the Black Caucus, I coun;dn't understand the republican outcry, and then last night while watching the Kudrow report I discovered that while Obama blamed the Federal Goverment for denying New Orleans a suspension of the Stafford Act, Senator Obama himself, voted to refuse New Orleans a suspension. Equally, he failed to mention the millions of dollars sent to New Orleans, more money then was sent to NYC, or Homestead (the community devastated by hurricain Andrew). He also failed to mention that the people of Homestead were literally begging the Government to do something because it took several days for Fema to act. Yes, FEMA refused to act for several days after Hurricane Andrew, that they were or weren't a predominately "white community" matter little to the Federal Government!, but that doesn't make for good press if one would rather spread ghosts of racism.

Iow's, he lied, and spread racism, all the while promising bi-particism.

Further proof: "The Romney campaign" has already walked back half of what he's said, and will walk back the rest within a week or so. (One quibble: The real Barack Obama would never have threatened to kill Big Bird and fire the already-retired Jim Lehrer.)

Next up: Paul Ryan pretends to be Joe Biden? Good luck with that.

@SUzc Obama spoke 4 minutes longer than Obama. They were both guilty of interrupting each other and going over their time. Romney interrupted Obama when he was making false statements relative to Romney's position on the topic at hand. Like Obama could read Romney's mind and know better than him on where Romney stands and how he feels about the issues. How arrogant can a person be?

Romney is going to lose because his own party has been and continues to be his worst enemy... http://www.vaishwords.com/2012/10/the-grand-old-ghost-of-george-w-bush.html

Excellent observation! You hit the nail on the head.
Why don't the print and TV commentators see this?
Most of them simply accept this cynical morph of Romney's as a conventional 'having to move to the center,' and discuss his latest stands as if they are genuine.
It seems that the media saw their next big story/big ratings as 'Romney changes the race,' and their own commentary aims to make that come true.
Grrrr.

I would hope that the public would be aware of this, but, knowing how so many people do not think critically, that won't be the case. It's so easy to hoodwink people.

Mr. Romney! All the statements you made at the last debate, are "those your final answers?"

Apparently, we need to apply the game-show rules of "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" to "who wants to be President!"

LOL - wow - really? So, you agree that Romney will "stick to this?"

100's of fact-checkers seem to disagree.

Romney has been saying the same ting for a while. Where on Factchecker do you vie this? exactly explain what and refer a link.

It is obvious that you don't care what it is running against President Obama, or how much damage it would do to you and the country.
