Growing up in the 50's he was a staple in our home along with Engineer Bill. Have many pleasant memories of being a 5 year old and watching them. RIP.

Also Skipper Frank and Tom Hatten...I used to be a proud member of the lunch brigade...We sang "Put another candle on my birthday cake...c'mon and take some birthday cake...Put another candle on my birthday cake..I'm another year old today"..

Man, Sherriff John. Gone. I watched him and "Cartoon Carousel, and of course, Engineer Bill. Red Light, Green Light. As teenagers my brothers and sisters would play it just for fun and the memories of the fun we had as children. Anyone remember Susie? She would draw a picture with the letters from your name? Tom Hatten did too, but I remember Susie doing it first. Wow. The passing of another "childhood" friend. God bless, Sheriff John. Life.

Sad sad day! I was 5 yo and won a 12# turkey with all the fixin's from the show. I mailed in a picture of the Green Hornet's car (I think). My mom has no idea how I did it, but there was a mailbox at the corner right next to my kindergarten playground. Such fond memories! I loved loved loved Sheriff John! RIP

Awwww. Sherrif John. I loved me some Sheriff John.
Put another candle on my birthday cake
Another wish I'm gonna make (kinda guessing here)
Put another candle on my birthday cake
I'm another year old today
We'll have some pie and sandwiches
Some chocolate ice cream too
We'll sing and play the day away
And one more thing I'm gonna do
I'll blow out the candles on my birthday cake
And when I do, a wish I'll make
Put another candle on my birthday cake
I'm another year old today
Happy Birthday to you
I'm another year old today. Wow, even got the majority of words right. Thank you, Sheriff John, for the bestest childhood memories. Res In Peace. Life.

Hello Your name here; Wasn't he great? Lunch with Sherriff John. Wouldn't have missed it for the world. I'm surprised I remembered the words. But I guess it became indelibly stamped after so many happy lunches with him. It's fun to recall happy times. Isn't it? All the best. Life.

I had a very troubled childhood, and SJ was one of my escapes....when I just saw that he died....I burst out crying....I remember in particular the song he used to sing that said a smile makes a hatrack look like a Christmas tree......well, we were to poor to have a Christmas tree, so I used a broom with some branches from the neighboring yards......he was such a bright light to me, as a 5 yr old

08:14 AM on 10/08/2012
I watched him every day in Los Angeles. He was great. I think he ran Little Lulu cartoon along with many other offerings. "Put another candle on the Birthday cake" was a staple. I thought of him for no real reason just a few days ago. Peace to his family from your extended family.

I grew up with sheriff john in the 50's. What great memories of wonderful time gone by. Southern Califorinia, especially Orange County was a paradise for you children growing up. His passing marks the end of an era.

Add me to the growing list of comments of people who offer their condolences at the passing of "Sheriff John." I also remember the Sheriff John show, and his trademark "Laugh and be Happy" opening. The cartoons, "Crusader Rabbit and Clutch Cargo," and of course, the "Put Another Candle on my Birthday Cake." Ahhh, life was simpler then - RIP, Sheriff John.
