Excellent article. However, a small point of pop culture geekery:

"After Labor Day, Romney pulled the sheet off his Etcha-A-Sketch and started over."

I know what you're thinking about, and I don't remember the name of it if it has one, but it's not an Etch-A-Sketch. You SHAKE an Etch-A-Sketch to erase it.

Thanks! That boggled me too! In addition to the additional "a" stuck on the first syllable. OK, this is totally irrelevant to the actual topic at hand, but I couldn't help thinking, Didn't Mr. Alexander ever play with one???

Actually, I'm quite tired of the actual topic at hand. The President and Secretary of State were angry and firm at the Rose Garden press conference. I'm sure that whatever can be done to find the SOBs who did this, is being done. I no longer care to hear bickering about when exactly someone said "terrorist act" as opposed to "acts of terror."

Amen.

One thing that struck me later on, though, is, remember how the Bushies (members of the party of "personal responsibility") were all about blaming other people for their failures? And here we've got the President and Secretary of State BOTH accepting responsibility when something goes wrong, even if it wasn't their fault. (After all, it was Paul Ryan and Congress who CUT the budget for embassy security.)

We are not going to accept spin & lies from politicians anymore. Journalist need to do live fact checking more to keep comments based on facts. Nixon's dirty tricks, Atwater, and Karl Rove's dependence on spin, outright lies, half truths, and deception is OVER. Policies and ideas need to be presented, with specifics & details and NEED to rise or fall on their own merits. The USA deserves the truth and American Citizens Demand it. Present your case, take responsibility and quit insulting us with lies.

The President's rebuttal of his opponent's claim was a stunning and dramatic moment. In one instant he became larger than life, he became the President of the United States, and his opponent looked small and petulant in his shadow.

The burden of being the POTUS is impossible to imagine. But in the words the President chose to convey it ( "I have met the caskets"....) we get a sense of a man who is not only able to deal with great challenge, but to do it with grace and dignity.

His opponent, in that one moment, lost all credibility as a leader and became, instead, just another hack with high aspirations and no sense of the magnitude of the job he would seek to have.

If you like used-car salesmen, then vote for Romney. That's exactly what he is: He'll tell you ANYTHING you want to hear to close the deal, period. It's why he's taken every position on every issue over the course of his life: Say whatever it takes.

Are those conservative principles?
Is that that sign of a leader?

Ladies who may be on the fence; you know the guy who will tell you ANYTHING? The "player" who will tell you he loves you, then leaves / never calls? THAT'S Mitt Romney. He'll say whatever it takes to get you to do what he wants, then he'll leave you.

And remember this will probably put you in the 47%, which means you are a big loser victim who doesn't take responsibility for yourself!

But if rr gets elected, then there won't be a safety net any longer, no food stamps, Medicaid, or other forms of assistance, and your life and child's will be on a
spiral downward, because remember, r couldn't find any women for his administration in Massachusetts, and no women or minorities for Bain because they don't wan't to work for Bain (hmmm? Why not?). But wait, there won't be any jobs in America, because he SHIPPED THEM ALL TO CHINA, AND NOW HE'S SPYING ON BOTH CHINA AND AMERICA AND WE ARE NO LONGER FREE! So now not only is your uterus not free ,but NO ONE IS!

Romney is an award winning snake oil salesman. From his time in the Church, when he inhumanely ignored one of his parishoner's need for an abortion to his time at Bain when he pushed cigarettes on children and Russians. While in Masachusettes he continued his sneaky ways, attacking the coal industry he now embraces. While at the Olympics he required a bailout he would have denied GM. His story changes based upon the venue, from hyper-liberal during his campaign in Mass to hyper-conservative during the 2012 primaries to moderate in the weeks leading up to the election.

I saw on the stage last night a very practiced and intelligent con man. It takes a certain level of intellect and political awareness to see through his slick exterior, but it's visible. Mitt Romney is answerable to Mitt Romney and only Mitt Romney. Like his father, he will say anything to get elected. And, like his father, he will lose because people may not be able to know exactly why what he is preaching is fantasy, but they can feel it. People just know when they are being sold a lie.

We don't want your magical elixers, Mitt. They may work on the Tea Party True Believers, but they always have worked on that small slice of Americana, haven't they?

Interesting. That could be a strategy. I thought the age of the internet would make it harder to lie but I was wrong. If used correctly, you can lie quite easily by flooding the fact stream with overwhelming information/disinformation. You know, muddy the waters to the point where facts won't matter.

Correct your facts professor, Obama was talking about the first 911 attacks, and kept pushing the the video as the reason for 14 days after the attack -- even stating it over and over again that the video was to blame in his UN speech long after the attack. Crawly rescued the president several times, and was obviously completely biased. Never more so then this example of declaring a falsehood true to the favor of Obama, which she now has addmitted and has appoligised for.

Just a note, no one plays more shenanigans with statistics than progressive democrats. It's hack professors like you that create so many uninformed so-called "educated" youth. Unfortunately education does't make one smarter or wiser, but because of teacher like you it often doesn't make them more knowledgeable either.

HE IS PRESIDENT OBAMA. Duly elected by the citizens of America.

It doesn't matter what I say in response to your fact-challenged post. It doesn't matter if I give you a dozen links to reputable, credible sources for the actual facts, you are going to believe the Rightwing conspiratorial-misinformation blogs and reports because whatever the President does or does not do, it is wrong in your eyes.

Creditable facts go beyond opinion blogs and articles. They go beyond biased so-called fact checkers. Always to check the facts yourself stop buying into the propaganda, I know it's hard tpfor you to look beyond the left wing cheerleading press for information, you don't even need to go to right wing media, just check the facts yourself, thoroughly don't just stop when you think you got something that supports your original belief. This was an important moment in the debate, but Crowley could also have called Romney out on his lies regarding his position on women's access to contraception. He said that he did not think an employer ought to have the power to deny coverage for contraception. In fact, he supported the Blunt-Rubio amendment in the Senate that would have done just that, not only for women and contraception, but for any procedure or medicine for any employee if the employer claims that such violated his morals.

Just like Cronkite did - he did not put up with it & our political debate was more rooted reality & Pols had to present ideas the rose or fell on their own merit with details & specifics

Perhaps in 2016 we ought to have debate rules that allow for real time fact checking by the moderator. When I looked at factcheck.org, it referenced distortions that they have corrected before that were repeated in this debate. So, real time fact checking is possible.

I am happy to hear that many Americans are beginning to recognize this.

What I see happening:

Romney says anything and everything ... and flat-out |ies ... to appeal to moderates and undecided voters.

Several days later, his handlers come out and walk back what he has said.

BUT ... it is already out there and those who heard and believed him, never hear the walk-back.

It's a strategy. It is dishonest, unethical, utterly shameful, and as you said, e v i l .

I am appalled by the Republicans to see the lies being told and not having any concern over it. They have been told that Obama does it too and the press has not been forthcoming that while Obama may bend the truth, he doesn't frequently out-and-out lie. That has been the norm for politics in my entire lifetime. But when the lies are blatant, you've crossed a line into a world where black is white, up is down and nothing makes any sense whatsoever. I would never marry someone I knew was out-and-out lying to me and I'm sure as heck not going to vote someone into the Oval Office knowing that they have a problem telling the truth. There is just way too much at stake in that. I wouldn't care if they were Republican or Democrat. Liars are not to be trusted. And Romney is way too comfortable doing it. That is scary. And it should be for Republicans but for some reason it isn't. Lemmings are the only thing I can think of that approximates that level of denial and utter lack of self.

Many Republicans would think Romney did a great job no matter what he did or said last night because they are not interested in deviating from their beliefs or even questioning them!
They would happily vote for Bush again if they could, rather that for the "closet Muslim black who wasn't even born in the US"...!
A narrow mind is a very difficult to reverse.

Candy Crowley’s Benghazi Lifeline to Obama - Matthew Vadum

In an outrage destined for the history books, the moderator of last night’s hotly contested presidential debate uttered an untruth about President Obama’s deadly bungling in Libya after Obama overtly asked her on live television to support his dishonest version of it.

It was truly unprecedented and could only have happened in the Age of Obama.

During the town hall-format debate with an audience of undecided voters, Crowley provided an assist to Obama to help him perpetuate his administration’s ongoing cover-up about the murder of four Americans –including the U.S. ambassador— at the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, this past Sept. 11. Reports indicate that Ambassador Chris Stevens and other officials were provided inadequate security in a particularly hostile part of Libya.

Romney consistently came off as the spoiled rich kid who's used to always getting his way, and the last word. How many times did he interrupt, bully, and go back to something that was already discussed to try to salvage some semblance of credibility? The China discussion had ended minutes ago, and he just couldn't let it go, because Obama completely owned him on it.
He simply had to have the last word, even when he was flat out wrong or lying.
Read the fact check on the issue of drilling on federal lands. The amount of oil being pulled from federal lands is up over 10% under Obama, but Romney just kept pushing and lying. Simply couldn't accept he'd been beaten. Like a child would do...

Nice post!

Romney also is a control freak. It was shocking to me (but not surprising) the way he condescended to Crowley and felt he had to explain the rules to her ... after all, he is the boss, the CEO in charge.

He did the same thing to the President. Utterly disrepectful and condescending.
