Wow, a preist that purposely defies his oath of celibacy to God.

Well, if he can't take his oath to God seriously then what else is not right about this priest?

Did this priest ever even read the bible? I mean seriously?

Romans 1:26 and 27

Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.

1 Corinthians 6:9

Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

So I am curious, how can this priest even claim to be a Christian while violating something that God says is deserving of damnation?

Kind of makes everything he says suspect.

I don't think I read anywhere that he broke his celibacy, just that his sexual orientation is towards same sex people. Priests who take celibacy oath do not become asexual, they just do not (or should not) act upon their instincts or physical desires. A person can be gay or heterosexual and celibate.

lisbonlux, well that is true. I do agree with you...doesn't mean he is doing right by his faith though.

"So I am curious, how can this priest even claim to be a Christian while violating something that God says is deserving of damnation?"

Literally every Christian is violating something that "god" says is deserving of damnation. Get real.

I guess the Bible would be wrong if we lived in alternate, reverse world. Good thing we don't.

So he lied to the Church about his sexuality to become a priest?

Unlike the millitary, the Church didn't ask. Up untill Pope Himmler decreed it forbidden after the sex abuse scandal, the church ordained celibate Gay men.

The 'truth' in that verse refers to Jesus Christ.

Bonfanti is quoted as writing on Facebook, "I am gay. Or, better, I am a happily gay EX-priest."

-Fixed that for you.

Isaiah had this to say about Pastors who endorse such contradiction to the faith: “You call evil good and call good evil. You turn darkness into light and light into darkness. You make what is bitter sweet, and what is sweet you make bitter” (Isaiah 5:20)

Your religion should be telling you not to judge others. That part doesn't take huh? Interesting the minutiae sticks but the main tenets don't. C'mon man just be fair!

Disagreeing with another man’s theory does not mean one is judging. If so, you are being judgmental as we speak. I know Liberals like to exploit the word though. It is the prime detractor to avoid the tough virtue of thought.

I was raised Catholic, and continued to practice for my mother's peace of mind for most of my adult life. The majority of priests assigned to the parishes I worshiped were clearly gay-- I never slept with one, but I had plenty of chances.
While the Church allows gay men to be ordained, they definitely don't want them being too 'out' about it-- even if they are celibate. The Church likes to pretend we can put our sexual natures-- gay or straight-- in a box and forget about it.
So this news isn't a small, localized thing. How the public, the parish, and the pope reacts will determine will be fascinating to watch. A decade from now, it may be seen as the first crack in the dam...
Thanks to strong teachings on social justice, 72% of Catholics in the US support gay rights, applying the same standards towards homosexuals as to other minorities despite the opposition of an increasingly bigoted, ultra conservative hierarchy. But not even the Church can stand against the tide of history.

72%!! Where do you get that extravagant figure!? Rest assure the Church will not fold under societal pressures even if she stands alone in Christendom. She is there to defend and uphold the teaching of her Master, not to cater to the lower appetites of men.
07:20 PM on 10/18/2012
Wow, I guess your cult just let its members on the internet. "Obey the Master" Are you joking!? I'm my own "master" and am owned by no one, especially not someone who I've never met and no one has PROVED to exist. Maybe if I was a slave, at least I could know what my "master" looks like. Go back to your "master" back at the headquarters and make sure your rituals don't sacrifice too many nonbelievers... Jeez, you people are the ones who give religion the reputation it has...

The poll numbers are out there, look them up for yourself. Know what Christ said about gays? Absolutely nothing.
02:50 PM on 10/18/2012
I'm not sure how I feel about this. Is it really appropriate to come out on Facebook?
04:41 PM on 10/18/2012
I came out on Facebook a week ago on National Coming Out Day. My family already knew but I wanted to tell my friends. Why do you think coming out on Facebook is inappropriate? (not attacking you just asking why you feel that way)
09:03 PM on 10/18/2012
Well, to answer your question, this is supposed to be a priest. A man of God.

Now we know the "wolf in sheeps clothing".

It is very sad.
01:13 AM on 10/19/2012
I think it is a good thing if that's what worked for you. I don't know if I like the idea of a priest broadcasting personal information, especially about his sexuality, on Facebook.

The whole thing about celibacy is for gays to hide. Forget it ladies, it's 2012. Come out! Stop hiding. Unless you've got real dirty secrets. Then the church will just move you around and keep quiet....

Girl, you didn't have to hide behind the Catholic Church. That's a major part of the problem. If you like kids, that's another problem. If you don't, then go Methodist. Or any Protestant sect for that matter. The Catholic Church is scary. I hear enough about that at home by my silly partner.

1) he's a man, 2) who said he was hiding behind the Church?
02:16 PM on 10/18/2012
Good for him! Now only if he could free himself from that oppressive system that condemns and judges everyone.
09:06 PM on 10/18/2012
You mean God that does not condone homosexuality?

He works for the church. An oppresive system?

Who the heck do you think created the church...and I don't mean the Catholic church but the Church that Jesus created.

What the core issue is that no one wants to admit too is that God said it is wrong to be a homosexual. 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 and Romans 1:26-27

I am sorry you think God is oppresive, but God can pretty much say what is wrong and right. That is what makes him the creator.

11:23 PM on 10/18/2012 you're saying that all your morals are RELATIVE ie based on what-ever God thinks is right/wrong? (never-mind that God in a fantasy)

No wonder the Catholics do harm where-ever they tread...they have lost all basis for morality in favour of a fictional entity...

Jesus never created the church, Paul (who never met Jesus) did, and with it's history of torture and murder and it's current track record of active hatred toward others, Jesus would most likely be actively appalled by it. Thomas Jefferson once said that 'Paul was the first corrupter of the doctrines of Jesus.', and he was right based upon the atrocity that Pauls creation has blossomed into.

God also said that adultery was wrong, in fact that is one of the ten commandments while homosexuality doesn't even make the top ten. But I don't see the church spending tens of millions of dollars tormenting adulterers or prohibiting remarriages. That is because LGBT folks are an easily bullied and targeted minority, whereas adulterers are a dime a dozen and are probably the churches biggest contributors.

I don't simply think god is oppressive ... the bible points that out more than adequately in all of the passages where he directly commits or orders murder, torture, enslavement, rape, genocide and infanticide.

How is this news?? I thought that most of them are, Priests are always in the news about messing with altar boys anyway.
08:29 PM on 10/18/2012
There is a *huge* difference between a gay man and a pedophile. Ironically, the Catholic Church is into condemning the former and protecting the latter.
09:15 AM on 10/19/2012
It's really not that *huge* of a difference.
09:07 PM on 10/18/2012
If the Catholic church allowed priests to marry then they priests would have an outlet for their sexual frustration and not turn to do sinful things with other men (or boys (Sorry, tongue in cheek there)).
There’s nothing blissful about ignorance.

It is a big story for him and his parishoners: Priests have always pretended to be straight, which tends to confirm their more hide bound congregants in their prejudices-- it's much easier to hate an amorphous idea of what gays are like if you aren't receiving communion from one every Sunday.
11:43 AM on 10/18/2012
The churches official position is that it will accept gay men into the priesthood IF they are not sexually active and, have not engaged in homosexual relations for more than a year.

You can expect the church in Rome will mandate that Father Bonfanti make a public statement stating that he is and has been practicing celibacy.

How many men are in the priesthood because they are gay men and have been told their entire lives that what they see as love is a sin punishable by eternal damnation and so to quell those lustful feeling they become priest and take a vow of celibacy in the hope God will control their biological urge for sex?
