I advise anyone that is vague about the history of Cuba, Castro, and Batista before him to just do a quick read of F. Batista on Wikipedia after you read this. There are many old fans of Batista still alive in this country that think they will have a monetary windfall in Cuba after Castro dies. They live with the hope of reliving the pre Castro past, much like some people are obsessed with the future prospect of winning the lottery.

Many of those people were shopkeepers or successful doctors, lawyers or other professionals. Many are teachers and professors. It was not only the casino owner who fled Castro's Cuba, but anyone who owned his own business or enjoyed free speech. All businesses were nationalized, and most farms. Instead of the successful sugar cane crop, Castro forced farmers to grow all kinds of produce, which proved to be a huge failure. In South Florida, where I live, most who fled when Castro came to power were from the middle class. Poor and disenfranchised had no reason to leave then---unless they were homosexual, in which case, they would have been shot or imprisoned.
Just because Castro made it to old age, does not wash away his sins.
The 'cuban crime wave' that occurred much later, brought unsavory and mentally ill to our shores because Carter dared Castro to do so.
This new, revisionist history, where we see Fidel with a sort of 'The Old Man and The Sea' type label, does not suit him. There are sham elections in that country...the man is a dictator and murderer.

Some of them just want their house back and the few measly dollars he stole when he nationalized all the banks and used them as his personal petty cash fund. Just because the people he murdered or tortured to death are silent does not mean they did not exist. The Cubans I know here in South Florida do not claim great wealth in their past; they only remember a time when Castro took everything they owned. Batista fans would be close to their seventies now, and I have never met one who thought he was going to hit paydirt when Castro dies. These people are telling you true stories about their past. Some were just shopkeepers or professionals. Sorry their happy memories about the past are irksome to you.

OR how about The United States end it's embargoes against Cuba.
01:54 PM on 10/22/2012
The embargo is not the biggest problem. Other countries trade with Cuba. I'm Canadian. We trade with them. It's still a repressive dictatorship. Their problem is not trade, it's investment. The country has not got enough money for any kind of development and no one will invest much as long as this regime is in power. Even if the US stopped the embargo, they would not invest there anyway.

Many of them are correct. When he became the first communinst leader of Cuba, the first thing he did was nationalize farm property, banks, small businesses, and many homes. He did not nationalize homosexuals----those people he had murdered. He outlawed free speech, closed universities, and sent many teachers, writers and professors running for their life. As is policy, the first thing any dictatorship does is outlaw intelligent discourse.
For the most part, it was the middle class and above that left Cuba. So, although those stories are boring to you, many are true. I am sure that those who lost everything because of that man are sorry for making you yawn.

Only if you do not know the history of Cuba. Just because someone made it to old age does not mean that they did not nationalize all privately held land, bank accounts (and the bank), close down media outlets such as radio, newspaper and television, murder to imprison homosexuals, writers, professors and those who spoke out.
He is a freedom fighter only is you think that having the middle class run for south Florida with only what fit in a small suitcase while leaving behind their homes and land is a good thing.
He is only a freedom fighter if you think making a deal with Kruschev to point missles at several large population centers in the US is a good thing.

How old are you? Are you serious? Castro promised to restore Cuba's constitution and conveniently forgot to do so. There are no bill of rights in Cuba. You do the master's will.

One lady said "down with Castro" and got four years in a wretched jail.
No freedom of speech
It's illegal to surf the internet
You can't sell what private property you are allowed to have without state permission.
Salaries are controlled by the state. Who has the incentive to be a doctor when their salary is $80 a month?
2nd highest number of journalists arrested
Gay lifestyle prohibited

There is no freedom in Cuba.

Thank you for that. I thought I was the only one blogging who was born before 1991. But it wouldnt matter anyway---if a person is not allowed to leave their country (i.e. North Korea) and the media is state owned (i.e. North Korea)---its a safe bet that there are other offenses against human rights as well. the fact that we have documents evidence really means nothing against the pic of an old man in a straw hat. I hope I live long enough that everyone thinks I was an angel, too!!

Then I would advise you to avoid your Uncle Al. Castro can make you disappear just like he did to thousands. Unless you are or appear homosexual, then he will shoot you on the spot. But not before he nationalizes your tiny farm and the home on it, and the tiny bank account you thought you had. Then he will make you grow crops he wants you to grow. But do not speak out because he closed every single radio and media outlet, newspaper and television station in the nation. And installed only one.
