Sorry, but did you actually see the whole reference, or did you just switch off at a white guy making a Rosa Parks reference.

He was basically saying that the use of Rosa Parks' protest as the kick-off for the Montgomery Bus Boycott was a way to get attention, and that didn't in any way diminish the importance or depth of what she was doing.

Most of that debate involved the other two candidates saying that Mike's pledge to take no financial contributions was "just" a way to get attention, and they repeatedly called it a gimmick, which technically means "just a way to get attention". His point was that while it IS a gimmick in that it was a way to get attention, that's not ALL it is, and it can be both an attention-getter, AND a meaningful stand against the influence of money in politics.

Where is the entitlement or absence of reality in that? Are white men not allowed to learn from the successes of the Civil Rights movement?
02:16 AM on 11/03/2012
She was not the only one that was asked to move to the back of the bus and probably was not the first to refuse. I see no analogy in what the "white guy" and your "basic understanding of her act had towards the civil rights movement and refusing donations. (one is a life and death situation and the other is just what it is ...a gimmick.)

Rosa Park suffered because of her act in ways Mike could only read about. I think it was a poor analogy should not have been use.

Your justification for what he said only make the matter worse. I respect his clarification a lot better.

The issue I have is the fact that whites are trying to rewrite history! She did what she did not as some gimick (she was not part of the civil rights movement at the time she was arrested) read what SHE SAID about the incident.

Just another example of liberals attacking their own for trumped up reasons. To the PC Thought Police, style is more important than substance.

Actually his official political designation is "progressive independent," which reflects his progressive stands on the issues. For example, he supports making the rich and big business pay their fair share of taxes, creating a public campaign finance system, reproductive choice, universal health care, and more public investment in communities. If more people here really knew what he stands for, I think they would be more sympathetic to his campaign.

And the herd all of which are headed entirely in the wrong and sorted direction will mow you down! That's a fact, everything that is human and decent has been turned upside down and backwards. Humanity by and large is phucked up! How else do Tyrants have the ability to rule the world? If enough people had their priorities in the right place and didn't want something for nothing Tyrants would never be allowed to gain power!

To actually have the b****and audacity to compare your campaign to the struggles of Rosa Parks and the Civil Rights Movement is a slap in the face. I'm sure there were other examples he could have used but this is the one that flew out of his mouth.
04:30 PM on 11/02/2012
The movement to get money out of politics of which the Connolly campaign is a part definitely is a strand of the larger progressive struggle in our country -- which includes the Civil Rights Movemment. It is totally valid to compare tactics within different movemenst in that struggle and to openly be inspired by them. That's what the anti-Vietnam War, Women's, environmental and other movements did, and we are all the better for it.

See, if you actually look at what he said, and maybe take a history lesson, he was pointing out that his "no money" pledge is partly a point by itself, but it's also a way to bring attention to a much deeper campaign.

In the same way, having Rosa Parks sit in the front of the bus was a point to itself, but it was also a carefully planned move to gain attention for a broader call to action across the country.

There's no comparison between Connolly's campaign and the Civil Rights movement, just between the tactics used. I'm sure you have no objection to Connolly learning from the successes of that great movement, right?

If you actually took a history lesson, you would know that Rosa was just really, really tired! For all she knew she would have been dragged off the bus and beaten to death, which was common back then

Rosa Parks was ready to do what she did. She had grown up with this Jim Crow idiocy and she had had enough. It was time for someone to refuse to move. She held her ground and Jim Crow moved. Rosa Parks is an American heroine.

That she is. What she did was also part of a larger, organized effort called the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

I thought everyone knew that! Why she did what she did and the end results! Communism had nothing to do with it. She was demanding her rights! Is that so hard to understand?

Not sure how it was a blunder - he made a valid comparison (as you basically just said), and did so in about three fairly short sentences. If you ignore most of his statement there might be some VERY small grounds for offense, but I have more faith in humanity than to believe that "meanlady21" some how managed to only hear the first ten seconds, and was unable to hear the last five or ten seconds.

The worthless last sentence makes up for nothing, that is like saying the n-word to us and then looking us right in the eye and saying "no offense". He meant what he said, how he said it.
02:19 PM on 11/02/2012
Much ado about nothing. I understood the point he was trying to make, he could have done it better which bring me to another point, he doesn't seem to be all that bright. I thought he was trying to pander with that response but maybe he's just not bright enough to pull it off. He should have asked some of his AA friends if that line worked before he used it and or how to re-state it.

Ok, now I'm just wondering if you're attempting to be satirical or something.
08:37 PM on 11/02/2012
No, but you might want to check with your other family members on that one.
02:55 PM on 11/02/2012
Do you tend to judge how well someone makes a point and how bright they are based on short clip from a larger debate within a whole campaign? Or do you prefer to know the larger context before jumping to such a conclusion? I would hope the latter. Take the right splice from any presidential debate and you can make either candidate look like a bumbling hypocrite. I saw the entire debate, and I know Mike Connolly. He is known to progresive voters in his distrcit as a highly intelligent, compelling progressive advocate.
08:35 PM on 11/02/2012
That's all good but one has to be smart enough to understand the game.  It sounds as if you know him and you believe he's a good guy, that's all good, but the rest of us don't so with a delicate subject matter like this, one has to think before they speak.  If he was on the South side of Chicago where no one knows him and he made that comment in the way that he did, he might not have made it out.  All I'm saying is that the way the game is played today, you get one good chance.  Even the President is measured in what he says.

Hmm.

Haven't polticians learned that they're on pretty thin ice already with things like this? Best to take that pause before you word something.
02:21 PM on 11/02/2012
Not bad advice, but it doesn't apply in this case. This splice was taken out of context by supporters of Connolly's main opponent ( a real creature of the status quo) in order to make it look like a slight on Parks. In fact, Connolly was associating himself with an heroic tradition of symbolic actions against oppression that are unjustly denigrated as "gimmicks." This is clear when you see the rest of the derbate and you actually read Connolly's explanation here.

It seems that this guy doesn't know the difference between a gimmick and standing up for one's rights. Is this someone that should be in any government position?
01:53 PM on 11/02/2012
Ridiculous. You don't what you are talking about, since you didn't see the whole debate. Connolly actually was saying that what he was doing was not a gimmick in the true sense of the word, but a symbolic act of resistance to injustice -- similar to what Parks and other progressive activists have done. You may not be able to see it, but Connolly absolutely is on the side of the oppressed in our country. You are letting yourself be deceived by a spliced clip intended to mislead you.
02:28 PM on 11/02/2012
Good point, but he should have run that line by some black folks to get some feedback relative to how it might be received. Sorry to say but the "Spliced clips" is how it's done today and one has to be cognizant of that fact. You only get one chance to make a first good impression.

If you're trying to make a point about campaign contributions, don't use Rosa Parks and gimmick in the same sentence. Ever. Your point will be lost and you end up sounding like a racist. Remember- think, think, think.
12:39 PM on 11/02/2012
Think more yourself, please. It was Connolly's opponents who used the word "gimmick" first. He was just responding to their charge. But you wouldn't know this because you only saw this spliced clip and not the comments prior to and following it. People should be more careful before shooting off their mouths about something for which they have insufficient information and letting themselves be fooled by a splice intended to distort.

It take a loooooooooonnnnnnnnngggggggggg circular road to contact anything that these men were discussing to Rosa Parks. he could have come up with another explanation. Freedom from oppression is not a gimmick. Let the Taliban come here and have someone stand up against them and tell me they are making a gimmick.
