Oh please......just pass the barf bag now. Paul Ryan is a Catholic that pushes for a budget that cuts social programs and the Nuns on the Bus are even against Paul Ryan. But - those male Catholic Church leaders sure do like Paul Ryan - don't they? Did you ever wonder why the nuns wear the black robes with no gold bling and these male Catholic leaders wear the gold-blinged robes? BTW - when did Jesus ever  Read More...

The nerve of Ryan to invoke Judeo-Christian values. What a mockery of a wonderful institution. Ryan scares most people of all other faiths including Jews. He, not Obama, is "THE OTHER".

Paul Ryan overhead after this speech...
"please don't let anyone know how desperate we are"

Ryan has no legislative accomplishments. Because he is not a senator or a governor, he has not shown that he can win an election outside of a Republican House district. His biography is not compelling; he has essentially spent his entire adult life in the conservative political world. He seems basically uninterested in foreign affairs. What he is, at least in the conservative world, is an "idea" man, and his big idea is to transform our social insurance programs so that they aren't social, or socialist, any more.

Yes, he is a "budget expert" and a "deficit hawk." But as history shows, he didn't always care about budgets and deficits. He started caring about them when he saw that conservatives could use them to oppose new and existing social insurance programs - Social Security, Medicare and Medicais - on the grounds that we can't afford them.

Of course, we can afford them with a judicious combination of cost containment measures, benefit cuts, and revenue enhancements. Politically, that requires what is called a "grand bargain," but when Obama and Boehner started talking about such a bargain, Ryan walked. A grand bargain would undermine his brand. Really, Obamacare amounted to a grand bargain, except it had liberals and moderate Democrats voting for conservative ideas, not liberals and conservatives voting for something together. Without that big idea, without the suggestion that he, unlike other Republicans, really intends to carry out the destruction of social insurance, Ryan is nothing but a generic Republican.

It's questionable that Ryan is a budget "expert." He became the so-called expert because no one else in his party picked up the mantle. As they say, in the land of the blind the one eyed man is king. None of his budget proposals have ever been enacted, and when his budget plans (rev 1 and 2) were scrutinized they did not stand up. He is a fraud, and generic indeed.
09:05 PM on 11/05/2012
Thank you, all outstanding points.

There was an excellent article in "The New Yorker" containing an interview with Ryan before he was the GOP's vice presidential nominee.

In it, he stated that ended all social entitlement programs - Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, was his dream, albeit likley an unattainable one, as he acknowledged; however, he would be pleased with drastically reducing them...

The Catholic/Ayn Rand devotee. Talk about a contradiction...!

His budget was condemned by the Catholic U.S.Conference of Bishops as well as the Catholic "Nuns on the Bus" as well as other Catholic groups as un-Christian and inhumane.

As an Evangelical Christian, I object when Ryan and friends suggest that their values are in any way the same as mine. I believe I'm called to serve widows and orphans, welcome strangers, work for peace, speak the truth even when it hurts, care for creation, advocate for workers and stand against anyone who would exploit the poor or take advantage of those in need. I'm called to see that healing is available to everyone, and to make sure that those in prison are treated justly. The values Ryan demonstrates are antithetical to the good news of Jesus Christ.

"The future must no belong to those who defame the prophet of Islam." President Obama remarks on 9/25/12 to the General Assembly of the United Nations. (Historically defaming the Prophet of Islam, includes, words, thoughts and deeds in conflict with fundamental Islam)

Ryan is an Ayn Rand devotee, yet claims to be an observant Catholic, which are completely and utterly at odds with one another.

If Paul Ryan was really sincere about what he classifies as Christian, then he would reject Mitt Romney as a Presidential candidate. According to the Church that Ryan says he is trying to defend, Mormons are not Christian -- and so he is advocating a non-Christian for president. President Obama is a member of United Church of Christ. Protestant, but squarely Christian.

For all the so-called Christians who want to claim Romney as one of their own, ask your clergy this: Could Mitt Romney receive the Communion in your worship service? Could he become a member without having to be baptized afresh? These are the twin tests of what it means to be "Christian" in the liturgical world. Romney cannot do either of these things, therefore he is not a member of a Christian faith.

So, Paul Ryan, your words are hollow. Your hypocrisy, however, is deafening!

There are so many that have faith in Billy Graham. His announcing that the Mormon church was not a cult, after so many years of stating the opposite. Had a very profound effect on easing evangelical voters minds. Scary in so many ways.Surely if Mitt was a Democrat neither of these men would feel the same way. Strange bed fellows indeed.

First of all,I would bet my entire worth that Ryan has never read the bible and knows practically nothing of its contents.
Anyone who has studied scripture and compares democrats to republicans would find democrats closer to biblical ideals then republicans across the board, with a few purely manufactured differences by the GOP.
2nd Thou shall not lie is a tenet of Judeo Christian teaching.Mormons teach ,it is okay to lie for God.Christianity teaches God is the beginning and the end.Mormons teach that anyone can be good enough to become a God.
Ryan was a dedicated follower of Ayn Rand till he was picked for V.P. Now suddenly he is a pious christian.
I don't think so.
I know Romney is NOT a Christian.
Obama is a born again Christian
12:32 PM on 11/05/2012
If Congressman Ryan wants to know about Judeo-Christian values, he should open a bible and read Matthew 25:31-46 and James 5:1-6. The bible gives you those values not the constitution.

One of the primary things that "made us a great nation" was separation of church and state. I have been around too long to let some shave-tail upstart tell me who I should vote for based on RELIGION. Mitt Romney is a MORMON--AND RYAN FEELS IT IS INCUMBENT ON HIM TO CRITICIZE OBAMA'S RELIGION??? The last time I checked there are very few voters who base their choice on a candidate's religious affiliation.

Thank you, my sentiments exactly. We do not, and never have had, a state religion in the US. There may be more members of so-called "Christian" churches, but real Christians are hard to come by--and certainly are not common in the field of politics--except for "lip service."
