Cornell West is correct if he means that extreme economic inequality is the cradle of social disorder, civil war and the rise of the indispensable man in politics. Martin Feldstein, a life long member of the economic elite creating dangerous inequality, is absolutely absurd in claiming that our present economic inequality is all right.  He is also wrong in claiming that any measures should  Read More...

This is about a level playing field, that's all. There are those on here who stereotype the poor, assuming they don't work. I work in social services and I can tell you they do. They will work 2 jobs, their teens will work to help support the family, and they get nowhere because the hourly pay is so low.

education mostly. Regardless of what others may think, higher education is often not in their scope because of having focus on day to day survival.

If you look back at history you will see that he is correct. The masses will only tolerate so much subjugation and if they are not able to feed their families, they will rise up. In our governor's race (my state is run by the tp). There was an ad that stated that one of the candidates supported tax breaks for the wealthy but considered a raise in minimum wage to $7.25 was preposterous, a true fact, he did say that. That there is the problem.

They have reproducing down pat. They have violence down pat. They have rhetoric down pat. Now if they could only come to the table like the rest of us have...rather than accuse and finger point. Now what did I do with my violin?
11:46 AM on 11/09/2012
You have a tabloid mentality. The drudge report is probably your first stop each day. Matt Drudge is on a mission to link every black crime in the country in order to feed the stereotype. There is violence in every community in the country. Poor whites are commiting hideous violent crimes each day. Drugs are a huge problem, too. The social ills are not being helped by the growing disparity of wealth in this country. And history has taught those of us smart enough to remember, that it's only a matter of time before the Bastille is stormed. The weallty need to burst that bubble they live in and get smart. No one wants to take their wealth away. But it would be smart on their part to support improving education and raising the mininum wage. CEOs make obscene salaries, more than what the actual job they are doing calls for. And often they are replaced because they don't do a good job. Yet, they want the person preparing their food to not earn enough to support themselves. I find it amusing that they never wonder if these people are spitting in their food or worse. I know that I'd wonder if I were them. Tick/tock......

sure they're all in those groups. Stereotype much? It's much easier to do than try to see them as people and individuals, right?

It's interesting that we'll put the poor, mentally incapacitated person on the TV screen and call them 'hoarders', but when it comes to the supposed 'job creating 1%' who aren't hiring but hoarding, we ooh and ah at them.

Cornell Wests, Pride continues to allow him to speak without consideration for real solutions. Wealth inequality may be here but the question is why? We have more people than ever feeling as if the country owes them something. Many generaations have found no jobs in their majors, they simply found honest work and kept working to provide for themselves, this generation protests, as if that will create a job. Gov't telling the middle class & poor that their plight in life is caused by someone else having success is a catalyst for class warfare and untrue. In the last 10 years we have had more 1st time millionaires than ever before, that mean it wasn't passed down or from being born with the proverbial silver spoon, at the same time we have had more, need and accept government entitlements which contiue to be increased by unjustly taken from earners. Might the wealth inequality have a lot to do with attitude and ones desire to be a producer instead of a consumer? It has to at least be considered. You do not create wealth by taking it from hardworkers simply because " They can afford it". you create wealth by creativity, new ideas and industries and hardwork.
08:21 AM on 11/09/2012
Read the book, saw the movie and it's still just spin and charicature. "Just find honest work"? Friend, this is not the 60's. There are no jobs, and the ever fewer that remain are of the "do you want fries with that?" variety, which even college grads are now forced to take. The mega-wealthy don't care if they make their money through the middle class or via stripping what's left from the poor who have no jobs to take.

Foolish twit.
08:38 AM on 11/09/2012
Perhaps you don't understand the book. I had a million dollars. I was going to build a new house that would've employed electricians, carpenters, roofers etc. But the govt. taxed me at a higher percentage than everyone else; then created extra regulations (expensive) telling me how to build my house. On top of that they threw in a property tax. The govt made it so difficult and cost-prohibutive to build my house I decided not to do it and keep the money in the bank for a rainy day. Who kept me from employing those electricians, carpenters and roofers? Socrates, if you can't answer this question honestly then please just fall back on your ad hominem twit calling.

There are too many who have decided if someone has more than they do, it should be taken from those that excel and given to those that have not

And the solution is???

Oh wait, I remember.

A quick anecdote. A neighbor of mine barely graduated high school. He got a job changing tires at a local chain. He saved his money and opened his own tire store. Now he's got 13 locations and is worth millions. He's that one percent that the left is always carping about. There are millions of stories like that.

Who deserves his money? Him or the lady with the Obama phone?

Just saying.

So you're saying that if someone has an incredible talent their reward for years of hard work is to give the fruits of that labor to someone whose sole claim is that they need and want stuff?

I guess that's the new American dream. Reward the mediocre at the expense of those that excel.

Cornell West isn't wrong, but the plutocrats have been trying to achieve that since this nation began. Their most blatant and expensive failure exploded in their faces on Tuesday, by the simple expedient of people getting out to vote with a courage and bravery, especially in the non-White communities, we haven't seen since the Civil Rights movement of the '60's. What a proud moment for Democracy!

Feldstein needs to add some definition to his terms. What is a high income fairly earned? Is trading derivatives back and forth between your co-conspiring banks fairly earning a paycheck or must some wealth have to be created?
07:32 AM on 11/09/2012
High income fairly earned...only in Colorado and Washington.
