-_- Both sides are being ridiculous. The solution to this is simple. Yes, look for small minorities that may be at risk, but no, do not go off the schedule unless you know your child is in one of those minorities. Is that so hard to figure out?
11:54 AM on 06/08/2009
It's not the vaccines themselves, likely, though could be something to do with them , of course. but the schedule is outrageous. What used to be stretched out over a long time, is now accelerated in a ridiculous way. I have been in the field and have seen the huge upsurge in these problems.
It's heartbreaking. Look at anything that might help. Families are understandably desperate.
02:47 PM on 06/09/2009
"It's not the vaccines themselves..." I don't think anyone can claim this at all. Since only one of the vaccines has been studied in any detail. I think the jury is still out on what isn't the cause -- let alone what is.

As a holistic health practitioner, research scientist and author of several books on illness prevention and toxicology, I applaud this study. I have read virtually every study in the field of autism and conferred with colleagues who assist autistic children and their parents. Here is what I have learned.

The medical community does not fully understand how the human body works or the impact of the mother's health on her fetus. There are no tests to measure the total body burden of heavy metals or organic toxins. There are no valid studies that control the variables necessary to make conclusions regarding the causes or treatments for autism. The best medicine can do is to observe and collect information for the future. In the meantime, my approach is to teach people how to restore their bodies as close as possible to the condition that Nature intended.

I feel confident there is no single cause of autism. Certain toxins, but not others, may produce symptoms in some children, but not others. I also feel confident that there is no single cure for autism. Certain remedies, but not others, may produce results in some children but not others. That is what the evidence has shown. I also applaud those parents and doctors with the courage to experiment with a variety of safe preventive measures and remedies.

For more information on an approach to health based on Nature, see my book: "The Wellness Project."

It doesn't take courage or integrity to perpetuate a witch hunt in the pursuit of a predefined cause which the vast majority in popular circles so obviously want to believe.

It's those with integrity who tell these rabid hysterics, no matter how loudly they scream "HERETIC!!!" or "OFF WITH THEIR HEADS!!!", that no amount of scapegoat hunting is going to overrule what remains ingrained in scientific fact.

A search through EBSCO databases, Academic Search Premiere, PsycArticles, PsycBooks, and PsycInfo on peer-reviewed journal articles on autism yielded 29,636 hits. A search through Sage Databases on autism yielded an additional 5309 hits. The journal Autism alone has 553 articles on autism. But Mankovitz has “read virtually every study in the field of autism and conferred with colleagues who assist autistic children and their parents.” I’ve been reading journal articles on autism for the last fifteen years, it’s a major focus of my master’s in psychology, and yet I haven't read “virtually every study in the field of autism.”

Mankovitz “received his undergraduate degree in science from Columbia University with a focus in electrical engineering, and he also holds a doctorate in law.” http://www.ablueprintforhealth.com/bio.php

There you go. He says he’s read “virtually” all the studies, and that can’t be a lie, right? The Handbook of Autism and Pervasive Developmental Disorders, Third Edition, which summarizes and encapsulates all of the knowledge accumulated over the last forty plus years into a 1478 page two volume edition would be a breeze to read one’s way through compared to the tens of thousands of pages in the studies done across the scientific fields of inquiry into autism, but Mankovitz, who is not an autism expert, wants to set your minds at ease. He’s got the answers and he’ll sell them to you in his book. Just visit his site and set your world to right.

Your point is well taken. I presumed from my posts that it was clear my interest is in the area of illness prevention, not on behavioral treatment. I leave that to my wife, president of the Santa Barbara chapter of Marriage and Family Therapists. If you eliminate the redundancies and behavioral studies from your publication list, what remains, dealing with nutrition and toxicology, is quite manageable, and is the focus of my research.

Regarding who is an autism expert, I have yet to meet one. How can anybody be an expert on a disorder for which the causes and cures are unknown. I do not hold myself out as an expert in this disorder, nor have I met any psychologists that claim to be one. That is the entire thrust of my original post. Nobody yet has the answers. At best, we have many theories, some of which produce some positive results in some children. If you disagree with that conclusion, please provide me with a list of references in your field that state otherwise, and I will have them reviewed by seasoned veterans in that field.

You seem to be amused by my educational background, as I am with yours, when it comes to uncovering the mysteries of a disease of unknown origin that produces behavioral symptoms. I am fortunate to have the endorsements of prominent MDs, biological dentists, and psychotherapists for my books, including perhaps the most famous living Jungian analyst of our time, Marion Woodman.

There has never been a demonstrated link between vaccines and autism. This belief is based on bad science and hysteria.

Without vaccines we would still be dying of smallpox. If you don't vaccinate your children you are HURTING them.

There is big difference between the mandatory vaccination for smallpox - which has a 30% fatality rate and can be caught from contact as far as 30 feet away - and chicken pox, which has a fatality rate of 0.0067%.

What we know is that vaccines save lives, and until we have solid evidence that the cure is more dangerous than the disease it doesn't make sense to stop using the cure.

Just because a person has autism AND has been vaccinated doesn't imply that
a person has autism BECAUSE they have been vaccinated.

Please everyone buying into this article, think through the argument logically and without bias. There is no good reason not to vaccinate your children (or yourselves). The evidence for a link to autism just isn't there.

Hi Everyone

Not sure I am optimistic about this meeting.

One recommendation is to prepare for mass immunisations that haven't previously been given to people.

Does that sound like the powers that be give one hoot for 260 000 adverse vaccine reports?

Lots of misinformation on both sides but sad to say no-one exactly knows what autism is or what causes it.

Most experts know many causes and these causes can cause other problems.

Thalidomide accepted as causing autism but causes flipper births too etc.

Lead accepted as causing autism decades ago but also causes many other conditions.

Vaccines have been accepted as causing neurological symptoms by every vaccine maker.

Of course you can be born with it or get it at birth but this blog is concerned with MMR causing autism, with vaccines causing autism and organomercury presently in 17 vaccines causing autism and the fact that regulators DENY this, deny trying to investigate fairly, and refuse to remove the mercury.

And a lot of people who have children with autism NOT caused by vaccines stirring things up.

I don't doubt that much autism is not concerned with vaccines but why do you insist that those who watched their child degenerate after vaccines should not press home their case?

Compulsory vaccines can kill certain people. It doesn't need to stop at a disorganised brain. Harry Clark vaccinated with mercury at 4.30pm and dead by 10.30pm is just one over studied example.

12,868 Serious events for all vaccines from 1980-2009 for infant to five years old.

The probability of vaccinations being dangerous & putting our children at risk is growing in evidence & reasoning but some unfairly insist what many see as warning bells going off, as just gut feelings & say they don't count.

They do count, when added up many times over as they do, no matter anyone trying to deny it.

Be sure to have your say at the other debates currently going on here at HuffPo, everyone.

No. You have to pick and choose. generally, though, the CDC is much safer to trust than the FDA. The FDA is funded by fees from industry, and has a customer service relationship with the drug makers its supposed to regulate. The CDC doesn't get its money that way. The CDC says there's nothing wrong with vaccines, and in the absence of any reliable study arguing otherwise, you can pretty safely take their word for it.

to say without unbiased research that vaccines dont cause autism in some childre is just a guess.all people react differently to meds.for people to say there is no connection simply because they didnt get autism and nobody they know did either is foolish.thats like saying because you can take antihistamines everybody else can to.

Five things to do if you want to advocate for Autism. Help us work our way through this epidemic.

1. Read All 19 studies that mainstream medical quote to make their claim that vaccines do not cause autism. Crib notes are at www.fourteenstudies.org

2. Read Age of Autism daily newspaper of the Autism Epidemic. The bull stops here! www.ageofautism.com

3. Join Causecast It is quickly becoming the buzzing hub of synergy between the many stakeholders in the non profit world and will lead us to change the world for the better www.causecast.org

4. Follow Jenny McCarthy on Twitter. She already has over 14,000 followers. This will help us quantify supporters of help for Autism and the parents frustration with the system. Also allow us all to communicate instantly http://twitter.com/Jennyfrommtv

5. Stay active everywhere http://www.huffingtonpost.com/news/autism Your church your school your workplace your healthclub Day care baby showers wedding showers Time to shout change support treatment from the mountain tops and the valleys worldwide. Go tell it on the mountain that No more sons ( and daughters ) need to be sacrificed for the good of many it was done once over 2000 years ago and yours does not have to be next.

Autism research is not only worthwhile and warranted it must be mandated after we help the families dealing with Autism today. Treatment therapies respite support FIRST....

Kids with any risk factor for adverse reactions should be excused from vaccination. We don't need 100% vaccination, just enough so that outbreaks don't become epidemics. It doesn't accomplish anything to vaccinate a kid who's never going to be exposed to the disease because everyone else is already vaccinated.
11:03 PM on 06/07/2009
That would be just hunky dory IF WE KNEW ANY RISK FACTORS! The point is, we don't.
So do we not immunize any children and just return to watching them die of diseases that are now preventable? And I love this plan to let others immunize their children to give herd immunity. There are areas in this country that have already fallen below the necessary levels of immunization to provide herd immunity, and guess what? They are seeing outbreaks of communicable diseases.
If you opt not to immunize your children, keep them home.

Our bodies are exposed to thousands of synthetic chemicals each day in our food, water, air. Ultimately, our immune systems will not be able to fend these off. I believe the chemicals are causing all the disorders, whether delivered in a vaccine alone, or in combination with all the other ones. Hard to pinpoint a cause, when it could be a combined assault.

Big chemical companies rule, and bombard us with messages about how chemicals make our lives so much better. So much so, that most people don't question it. Our role as consumers to look beneath the lies that are told to us 24/7. Question authorities, always. They are all in it for the money.

First of all mercury is still in some vaccines. My daughter was born in 2005. She had mercury (thimerosol) listed as in ingredient in her DTAP vaccines. She reacted to those. She was normal and now has autism. I can not say for sure the vaccines caused it but neither can you say for sure it did not. Mercury in very small amounts has been shown to cause immune dysfunction. The autism rates are climbing. I have worked in special ed and with adults with developmental delays. Guess what, if there were thousands of adults in the shape my kids is in well you can not overlook them.

it is time for some honest and unbiased looks at autism and vaccines. Thus far only 2 ingredients have been studied and no cumulative study of them all. If the powers that be ever want the vaccine program to have public trust they must earn it back. These studies will go a long way in doing that.

Big pharma will have to accept that the curtain is coming down on the practice of trusting the companies who make these vaccines be in charge of safety testing them. This should always have been done by an unbiased third party.
02:49 PM on 06/06/2009
seems to me the article was saying, at least for some, it is infections that are the problem. You will get those without vaccines...so, how is one to prevent the genetics of a person from doing them harm?

And if that is true about Hg, since it is everywhere in our environment, we would all be having immune dysfuntion.
03:52 PM on 06/06/2009
Immune dysfunction is very wide spread. There are many auto immune diseases. Autism, asthma, allergies, ms, and many others are immune disorders. Infections are very common in those whose immune systems are suppressed by heavy metal toxicity.

Yet, out of the blue with no autism in me or my husband's family my son reacted to a DPT shot - six hours after he received it and now has autism and epilepsy. My daughter ended up with Kawaskis, a disease I have never EVER HEARD of! My sister-in-law has twin autistic boys and another son only a year older with hyperactivity/anxiety (no one like him on either side of the family)? What about all these kids having to have special things done for them in school because they are all allergic to peanuts. Are these not part of the general population?

It is all a brain injury that is why it is a spectrum, it all just depends on how bad the brian injury is. Yes, I do know how bad it gets. I have 2 friends and I taught severe cases in special ed. My son was at one time just as bad as it gets, but improved to I suppose he is aspergers. But he will never be on his own. Today he kept interupting my 84 year old father who at our encouragment and because it was June the 06 agreed to talk about when he was in the war in Japan as a front line scout. When my daughter corrected him, My son became upset,,hurt feelings and stomped off to his room after saying some unkind things. He is very strong, he pushes mel, but has never hurt me. I had to talk to my son for an hour, since he never lets things. Meanwhile my 84 year old father took it hare too! I finally got my son to come down but by then the mood was ruined. After my parents left, I had to spend three more hours talking to my son to improve his mood, about ever silly notion that comes into his head. He is on the spectrum, and I know it is always better to be on the top than bottom--- it is also better not to be on the spectrum at all!

All were at one time healthy, normal, and then regressed. How Eserfina 42 does that contradict myself? I saw my son stroke out after his DPT shot, I measured his 105 temp, I saw his big, black - dead pupils of his eyes, I watched while he seized only 6 hours after his third shot. I saw him walking one day and the next he could not, I watched him take 3 months to relearn to walk. You must be interested in this or you would not be here reading. He has never had another allergic reaction from anything like that since - not bees, or wasp, not the MMR. A mutation to the pertusis vaccine perhaps? Oh, I know an allergy mutation to the pertusis vaccine runs in my husband's side of the family. so no need to worry, then.

The crowd that continues to insist on correlating autism to vaccinations based solely on sequence of events because it's easier or more fun to self-righteously assume a conspiracy than to do real research on the subject. Our lovely little fame-at-all-costs media culture has turned this whole debacle into something to pay lip service to in order to get camera time.
