Public option is the minimum; you are either with us or against us.

Agreed. The ONLY reason not to vote for single payer is you're okay with corporations killing Americans for profit.

I emailed him last week and I'll do it again -- I'm going to email all of these senators until they figure out who they are working for! We need to be vocal -- it doesn't matter if he's in your state or not!

Dispensing health care efficiently, and collecting the money to pay for it cheaply, that's the purpose of the exercise, no one can compete with the government at these two tasks, no insurance company, HMO, or hospital; nobody.

America’s Veteran Administration is the largest, lowest cost; best outcome producing at any cost, health care delivery system in the US, it uses the world’s best medical software, and it has been controlling the problems with access, cost, quality, and malpractice successfully for years.

(The Best Care Anywhere by Phillip Longman)

A national sales tax could pay for the public portion of a dual choice, public or private system.

Every American choosing public care would receive all prescribed care and medications free, no insurance, no co pays, no precondition exceptions, free period.

Businesses selecting public care for their employees would not have to pay for or be involved in health care in any way.

Individuals happy with their private systems could continue paying for, either by self pay, company pay, or private insurance etc, and using the systems that they like.

Private insurance and care providers would no longer be required to subsidize indigent and pre condition patients.

This will cost less to operate, than the $2.3 trillion dollars inefficiently spent last year.

I thought that the general concensus was that President Bush hated veterans and the VA was a prime example of that because it was underfunded, inefficient and was turning away patients??? Did I miss something? Did President Bush get a bad rap?
One of these sides is wrong and I really would like to know which is wrong.
07:03 PM on 06/08/2009
You didn't miss a thing. Never the less, the structure of the VA was sound before Bush took aim at it. He tried for Medicare and Social Security. He got blown out of water on Social Security and reached a draw on Medicare.

I am sick to death of the Blue Dogs. If you want to be Repub, then be Repub. But if you want to be a Dem- get busy and let us get something done. If you aint leadin' and you aint followin, then git out of the way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't you think that it is healthy for our country to have a majority of representatives from both parties somewhere close to the middle?
That is where the majority of the voters are in this country, real close to the middle.
07:53 PM on 06/08/2009
The middle is where every policy truly helpful to the people goes to die.

This liberal will give him a chance, as soon as he quits talking & thinking like a repub. I think the only way anything would change, is if the politicians lost their golden insurance programs & had to scramble for coverage like the rest of us. Then, they might have an actual clue as to what we are faced with day after day after day. Let's cut government waste & quit paying for congressional insurance!
07:04 PM on 06/08/2009
What do you think about their golden retirement plans and their golden annual raises that they have to decline in order not to get them? What about their golden salaries and golden expense accounts and housing allowances?
I think that they should be paid an annual salary that is in line with the per capita income of their districts. I think that they should get the same retirement and benefit packages as the average retirement and benefit package in their districts.
They are no better than we are but they sure treat themselves better.

LOL, I think you see where I'm going with this. I agree, they should lose all the things that Americans have lost these past few years. They have completely lost touch with their constituents b/c of all their built-in comforts. If they had to go without these creature comforts, maybe they'd finally get a clue as to how serious this is.

yet in another HP article he says he won't vote for single payer.

You've reached the bargaining stage a bit ahead of your cronies, Mr. Nelson.
07:05 PM on 06/08/2009
Two different votes. The cloture vote is to close debate and bring the issue to a vote. He'll vote for that, but then he plans to vote against the plan.

Cloture needs 60 votes, Passage only need 51. That's a huge difference.
06:32 PM on 06/08/2009
Ben Nelson has brought all the criticism on himself.

He needs to learn to keep his mouth shut and when it comes time to vote demonstrate that he is on the side of the American voter (ref the election) and not that of the Republican Party and their related neo-con, extreme conservatives.
06:55 PM on 06/08/2009
Is it unAmerican to ask questions and try to decide, for yourself, without urging from some no faced political party, what is best for the country? How do we know that some type of government run health care program would be the best thing for the citizens of the country? How do we know that, by putting an even larger sum of money on the table for the politicians that more won't be stolen by them?
How will this program be funded? How will we be ensured that it will operate fairly and to the benefit of ALL Americans? How often will reports that can be understood by common Americans be provided?
It is very difficult for me to believe that any, I repeat, any program that the government runs can be efficient and effective. I have witnessed so much government waste in my lifetime I am skeptical that the government can ever clean itself up and become responsible stewards of our hard earned money that they confiscate from us every pay period.
If anyone has these answers I am all ears and really would enjoy listening to reasons that you think the government can provide us with low cost, efficient and effective healthcare when they fail in this area in just about everything else they undertake.
07:06 PM on 06/08/2009
Government waste is miniscule compared to what the insurance companies can do. Don't forget AIG which markets it's personal insurance under the name 21st Century.

I hope Nebraskans get rid of this guy. It sounds like he is out for himself and he is probably a GOP in sheep's clothing. He has voted against President Obama on many important bills.

Am I missing something here? Didn't they thwart the filibuster on this issue and now only need a simple majority vote?

'cloture' = 'closure' i take it?
anyway, the only thing i could sincerely wish for these self-aggrandizing fence-sitters is simply that they would 'enjoy' -- as i currently do -- a broken molar, while they take their time to figure out if the taxpayers who pay their salaries deserve a bit of assistance paying for medical care.
Endodontist + crown: $2,200; elected officials who have full, tax-payer funded health care, diddling around and arguing about how many doctors can dance on the head of a pin: $feckless

"According to Pettigrew, the senator said he will not be the 60th Senator to sustain a filibuster on a bill that he ultimately would oppose."

That's wonderful... especially since you need SIXTY votes to BREAK a filibuster... you only need FIFTY-ONE votes to sustain it. We are so blessed to have such geniuses in congress...

As some union members told Sen. Specter in Pennsylvania over the weekend, "you vote for us, we'll vote you." If a Representative or Senator doesn't vote for the people who elect him or her why should they vote for that Representative or Senator ever again?
07:09 PM on 06/08/2009
Good question! Why have we continued to re-elect the ruling class over and over and over again? Why haven't we thrown Senators Kennedy and Kerry and McCain out of office? Why havent' we thrown Spectre out of office long before he needs to switch political parties to try to win yet another six year term?
These people don't represent us. They represent themselves first, their political parties second, their mistresses third, their vacation homes fourth and we are way down the line.
