The article says, "Israel launched the offensive last week to end months of rocket fire from the Gaza Strip". I would say Israel showed remarkable restraint. Had it been us, you can bet we would have retaliated much sooner.

Who has been firing rockets on Israel for a month?  You don't get to "claim" that you are peaceful when you allow, let me repeat allow the militants responsible to live in your midst.  I notice they were perfectly capable of rooting out the "spies" that they shot and killed and who the mobs then dragged through the streets, but they can't seem to find and rid their country of the ones continually perpetuating the violence.  Sorry, sigh, that fish don't swim.

Not with our current president. He would have sat down with them and shared milk and cookies so we could be friends.

Of course Morsi can feel confident that Hamas will agree to a truce. He probably helped orchestrate the rocket attacks in the first place.

Morsi wasn't/isn't a leading figure in the same organization that Hamas is a branch/child of for nothing.

The question is though, he can't really speak for the Israelis and it is doubtful they's be willing to just go back to the 'truce' that existed previously so it will be interesting to see what Morsi has up his sleeve.

You are talking about America, they say they are an honest broker but are the ones giving greenlight to lsrae and providing it with F16 and missiles that are used on Gaza.

Some president Morsi is. He is a perfect example of why the West should just stay away from Islamic dominated regimes. He claims to be an interlocutor but at the same time blames everything on Israeli aggression and nothing on Hamas. He calls Israel names, refuses to meet with any Israeli diplomat, and snubs his nose at the US. And for all of this, we give Egypt $1 billion in annual aid. Pfft.

Yeah, we should only give other countries financial aid and help them build up a democracy if they agree to love everything we do and say and if they refuse, well, we'll just use force.... has helped so often before, right? Nonsensical.

Morsi is demonstrating that, as an elected leader, he now has responsibility for the well-being of the 99% who are not engaged in any fighting. People forget that all this fighting is conducted by a violent 1% in the middle of the non-violent 99% who are trying to go about their daily lives, working and trying to raise families, just like the non-violent 99% in the rest of the world. The real damage is done by ALL the media that focuses on the violent 1%, and pretends like the non-violent 99% simply don't exist.

Want the truth? Here's the truth: Hamas started firing rockets and mortars into Israel. Again. Hamas puts their rocket and mortar batteries in civilian neighborhoods next to schools, hospitals and mosques on purpose to cause civilian casualties, this sacrificing their men women and children which they then use for propaganda purposes.

Sow the wind, reap the whirlwind. Israel should have used much more force than they did. Hamas should be thankful for the restraint.
11:24 AM on 11/20/2012
That is the truth....but hard for the many that are anti-israel (ie: the new anti-semitic) to want to hear it.

We all feel bad about the innocent palestinian civilians...including Israelis. They had it better when Israel was taking care of them in Gaza than they do now under Hamas. They are used as pawns by the Arab countries who after 65 years still won't let them into any of their countries.

65 years ago during the war of independance, 800,000 jews were thrown out of the surrounding Arab countries and also became refugees....the difference was that all of them were allowed into Israel and giving citizenship. Palestinians who left Israel during the war were not welcomed anywhere.

Excellent post, steven55. But of course you'll never hear/read about that truth from the MSM--including a certain on-line site I have in mind. "No bias" in the media, though. That's because there are no real Journalists, only pretend journalists (small "j" intended) with their own narrative to push.

The reason of course, that a cease-fire will never work is that Hamas does not have control of all of its factions. So even though the bulk of them may agree to a cease-fire there are always the odd cell that will send more rockets into Israel.
11:02 AM on 11/20/2012
Untrue. Until the Arabs recognize Israel's right to exist there will be no truce. Why would people that want to kill you agree to a truce?

I clearly disagree with Obama on this one. Israel is not the victim here. If anything, the victims are the civilians on both sides and I wish he'd pointed that one out. Violence has to stop and Netanyahu should stop playing innocent here, they are the ones using excessive force. Ban Ki Moon has just stated that last outbursts of violence will serve neither Israel (naming it first) nor Hamas. I fully agree with him.

Well, while the latter was just mindboggingly insane, the first one is still excessive. What about those numbers anyway? I hear numbers thrown around like candy. First it's 200, then 1000 now 2000. You'd think that Gaza is nothing more than a weapon's arsenal, judging by those numbers, and if they're official Israeli numbers, which they presumably are, some caution as to their validity is required.

"Hamas would only agree to a cease-fire if its demands are met." That, plus 1000 missiles launched into Israel last week are the reasons the violence continues.

I think you are confused. Israel has millions of non-Jewish citizens living with full rights in Israel. Hamas allows NO Jews into Gaza. The West Bank, when it gets independence, will likely allow no Jews either.

The blockade of Gaza may explain why Hamas is launching missiles, but it remains true that Hamas is and was the one launching missiles. Attacking civilians violently. A blockade is non-violent. Israel's use of violence here is in response to Hamas's violence. If Hamas's violence continues, so will Israel's.

Hamas is initiating violence, and responsible for it continuing. You may feel that violence is a reasonable response to the blockade. I supposed that is your prerogative. But that viewpoint is resulting in Palestinian deaths. You probably don't care.
11:24 AM on 11/20/2012
Gaza is not "occupied". Obviously the "blockade" isn't working. The missiles seem to be getting through.

Now we know that Obama and Hillary will respond if firecrackers are involved. My mom always warned me that playing with firecrackers would result in blowing my hands off. The libs told us that the Hamas rockets were firecrackers. Now we see what firecrackers can do in Israel. I will listen to mom and libs from now on.
