The inability of ideology bound Republicans to properly manage science and technology is once again demonstrated by their selection of a non-scientist from a major oil producing state to be the head of the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology.

No shame, no decency, no appreciation for the science that has made America great.

Republicans only honor money and profit. A pox on their ignorance and may they get voted out of the house in great numbers in 2014. Amen.

You don't know that. He has participated in writing science law - It is really hard for anyone to get into congress without a law degree; arguably anyone who isn't a lawyer doesn't belong there. But you are committing a logical fallacy in saying that people who aren't scientists don't appreciate the greatness of science.

Smith's rejection of the established scientific consensus on anthropogenic global warming which by the way is endorsed by every credible scientific agency that has studied it including NASA, NOAA, the American Geophysical Union, the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences and indeed every national scientific academy in the world and virtually every peer reviewed research paper dealing with the problem is reminiscent of the arguments put out by communists who I knew back in my university days. By the way these were real communists, dedicated Marxist-Leninists who could quote chapter and verse from Das Kapital. When they were confronted with arguments that cited evidence put out by very credible news sources such at the Economist, the Guardian, the New York Times or Time Magazine they would simply dismiss this by claiming that these sources were corrupt instruments of the capitalist establishment. In similar vein, Smith dismisses environmentalists and others including highly qualified climate scientists who warn about the seriousness of the issue as "global warming alarmists."

OK. A non scientist / non engineer /non technologist in charge of the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology.... another clear example of Republicans at work trying to sabotage America.

It is becoming ever clearer that the only groups that Republicans want to represent are billionaires and fossil fuel companies.

So much of the denial of anthropogenic global warming that's tossed out by simple minded reactionaries like Smith seems to be motivated by a kind of "common man" celebration of ignorance but he and so many of the other GOP science deniers aren't alone. There is a long tradition of simplistic ideologues rejecting science that didn't fit in with their belief systems. Adolf Hitler rejected "Jewish Physics" in favour of "Aryan Physics" and drove Einstein and many other brilliant physicists out of European leaving the Allies with the expertise to develop the atomic bomb.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deutsche_Physik#Effect_on_the_German_nuclear_program
Joseph Stalin rejected established agricultural science in favour of the nonsense promoted by Trofim Lysenko and the result was that the Soviet Union could not feed it's own population and in fact millions starved.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trofim_Lysenko
Mao Tse-tung ignored the established science of metalurgy and embarked on a program of small-scale production of iron and steel. The result was a disaster called the Great Leap Forward.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Great_Leap_Forward
More recently, in 1995 Thabo Mbeki announced his belief that the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is not the cause of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). I wouldn't put him in the same category as the first three I mentioned but here we see a similar rejection of scientific consensus in favour of an ad hoc belief system. Smith is in illustrious company.

A little info I stumbled upon concerning Lamar Smith from Wikipedia:
"Smith is a Christian Scientist."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamar_S._Smith
"Christian Scientists believe that sickness and disease are the result of fear, ignorance, or sin, and should be healed through prayer or introspection. Combined with a belief that the use of medicine is incompatible with Christian Science healing methods, this has led to outbreaks of preventable disease and a number of deaths. Its claim that sickness can be healed through prayer rather than medicine, its rejection of science as illusory, and its attempts to present itself as science make Christian Science a pseudoscience, in the view of philosopher John R. Searle...Christian Science is opposed to science and uses the appearance of being a science to give itself extra legitimacy."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_Science
That this science-denier should chair the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology would be laughable if it weren't such travesty. Meanwhile, if you listen very carefully, you can hear Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin howling in outrage.

Hey Lamar, do you think we need more dissenting scientific opinions on the existence of gravity too? I'm sure you must be wondering why all these gravity critics have been silenced! Just think how much money we would save on air travel if we could overturn the scientific consensus on gravity. Yes, you really do sound that stupid. If America is going to remain competitive we need to stop putting scientifically illiterate bumpkins to chair our science and technology committees. If I were you, I'd stop using all these questionable new-fangled science-based technologies around us today. When you feel sick, try incantations, blood-letting, and arsenic. If you can't find a doctor to recommend those methods, be assured that it is simply a conspiracy to con you into spending money on antibiotics or other worthless cure-alls to perpetuate the greedy research industry.

I can't help but wonder if Lamar Smith refers to the meteorologists who correctly and accurately predicted Sandy, Katrina, Rita, etc. as "Hurricane Alarmists." [I know hurricanes are weather events and not climate, but they were all predicted using science and technology — just like Global Climate Change.]

As long as the GOP keeps this up they will remain the party of willful ignorance, blind greed and anti-fact belligerence — three traits widely blamed for their stunning losses on election day.

But far worse, they will continue to drive inaction in the face of a tidal wave of evidence, and so doom us all to disasters that could have been avoided. Talk about healthcare reform and they'll complain that we're burdening future generations of Americans. Bring up climate change and they'll sell their grand children for an Escalade and a tank of gas.
