If we go over the "fiscal cliff" it will be because of the Republicans and the Tea Party and the fact that Boehner cannot control his caucus.

They forced deep spending cuts a year ago to raise the debt ceiling so that the nation could pay for the debts that Congress has spent the money on.  They got those deep spending cuts.  It's called the  Read More...

That debt ceiling stunt by the Republicans cost the nation 18.9 billion, yet the Republicans continue to tell us that they are the "conservatives" and against "wasteful government spending".  Add that to the 1.5 million that the Republicans spent to defend DOMA, the 50 million in taxpayer monies they wasted trying to repeal ObamaCARES and you're talking about some serious wasteful government spending.  They only wish that they could have added another 109 billion to the deficit to actually repeal ObamaCARES.

Republicans have a decision to make.  Taxes will go up on Dec. 31, 2012 if the Republicans continue to refuse to negotiate.  They have a decision if they want taxes to go up on 100% of the American people or 2% of the American people, who told the Republicans today to raise their taxes.

But instead of working on the "fiscal cliff", the House has adjourned for the week and headed home.  That doesn't sound like the Republicans in the House are very serious about a solution.

What do you call a President who won't honor his oath of office and implement existing law to aleviate financial and social burdens on 320 million citizens, particularly, when that law involves no budget costs that violate the debt ceiling?

I hope they have live coverage of Obama, Timmy Boy, Harry Reid, and Nancy Pelosi stepping off that cliff. I just wish this was a literal cliff.

To quote another clever HP blogger, it's just a bluff. Not a cliff.

Yep. Dems hold all the cards. The Prez looks like he's going to hold their feet to the fire. Don't give in!

What hump?

Exactly. Congress created this problem and is now acting as though it just happened yesterday. Maybe they should have been thinking about it over those long vacations that they have been taking.

Typical conservative tea bagger - never take any responsibility for the mess your own team got us into.

Go ahead, Geithner - you can tell us now.

Which is it you guys are trading away?
Social Security?
Medicare?
Medicaid?
Unemployment extensions?
Investments in the future / stimulus?

We say you give away our financial future to the banksters.
And, give and give and give.

Nothing much has changed. Senate and Congress and President still where they were.

So, just how much more are the rich going to get?
And, how will the invertebrate President give it up to them?

Go ahead. Tell us. We'll find out later anyway.

The article indicates that Geitner and the administration are willing to let the Bush tax cuts expire and the automatic cuts (sequestration, cuts across the board in discretionary spending with matching defense cuts) kick in on Jan 1.

Obama doesn't have to do anything even if Congress does nothing. Obama solved this problem back at the debt ceiling crisis in 2011 -- though it will probably have to play out for anyone to finally snap to that conclusion. I still can't figure out how he pulled that off.
