its obamas policy of divide the nation between immigrants and citizen, between one race or another. instead of speaking to all americans obama has separated us in to asians, latinos, blacks, whites, islanders, against mainlanders. he has spread a network of divide in all phases of our life. obama enjoy your muslim holidays in hawaii and keep spending american taxpayers money like water. thats what radicals do when they have contempt for other peoples money. they waste it to punish them.

Read your history books especially the part about the nuclear testing the United States did in the South Pacific. Also, look up the part about Bikini Atoll. Then read about the cancer rate in this area of the world and the number of still borns. Many Micronesians still come to Hawaii for health care at Tripler Hospital. Hawaii's tax payers are paying for the damage done to people by ignorant American leaders who felt that they needed to flex their macho muscles by having a bigger bomb than Russia. Whoever wrote this article whitewashed the situation by leaving out these facts.

As for the Obama bashers, I'm not sure that he was even born then. Paying this blood money was decided by his predecessors.

How do I know this? I was a school consultant to Hawaii's schools for 35 years and this is not a new problem. The problem though is that the Hawaii tax payer is paying for the financial costs of the problem. Also, there's no compulsory education in thes island states. So, Hawaii is getting older kids who've never been to school and probably don't understand why they "have" to attend. These kids band together and speak their native language because that's where they feel comfortable. They inadvertently isolate themselves culturally and sadly... like elsewhere in America many school leaders don't think outside the box when it comes to culturally integrating kids. Instead, they blame the parents and penalize the kids which only intensifies the problem.

Now Radiation is spewing around the world from Fukushima. Would have been a more useful article. MSMedia is ignoring the Huge Disaster. Japan is burning 560,000 TONS of Radiated debris and dumping the ash into Tokyo Harbor landfill. Also dumping 1000 TONS of Radiated Water into the Pacific DAILY. Between BP & TEPCO... all that's left to say is GO GREEN.

the article did not say anything about white ethnicity. it did in a concealed way say the fight was between two groups of polynesians, native Hawaiians and a new group of pacific islander immigrants of lesser economic condition.

too bad we have to decipher the news. read the article again slowly this time.

Really?107 million for 17000 refugees. Seems like a lot of money per person - are they paying for anything themselves?
Public education as we are currently promoting it, like the dodo, is a concept that has come and gone.We need to try to give people a basic education thru 8th grade, then divide them into vocational high schools and college entry high schools.Let the ones who want to learn go on, and the ones who have already shown their disinterest in learning get started on a useful vocation so they don't litter our prisons 4 years down the road. That way fewer fights , less tension between smart kids and trouble makers, and kids who want to learn have a place to do so. It's that or you can look forward to militarizing our entire education system. R.I. and Chicago have both successfully proven that simply throwing more money at the teachers doesn't do anything except give the teachers more money: You have to have a willing student if you want education to occur.

While I don't entirely agree with you, I do believe we need to resurrect a vocational program for many of our students. I think it would be a positive move for them, and give more direction to their life. And, I am a Chicago teacher.

my younger relatives can all run circles around me with a computer but cannot change their own oil, have no idea how the engine in their car works, cannot use a saw or drill etc. because they have not been taught any common trades.

i think it was arthur c clarke the sci fi writher who immigrated to cylon ( now siri lanka,) he headed up their school system. graduates can do wiring, plumbing, and carpentry.

It's called private school. It costs money and it is pursued by many who are serious about higher education.
04:56 PM on 12/10/2012
That works for the 1% or maybe even the top 10% who can pay for private education, but why should the middle class have to pay through taxes for a glorified babysitting service that isn't even effective ? Why not revamp it so that it meets the clear needs of the students it serves: education for the ones who want it, and a vocational program,(or suspension and juvenile detention) for the others.

We should NOT be arresting kids for fighting. That's what kids have always done and will always continue to do. It's a part of human nature (that's right; human nature isn't all smiles and happiness).

No one got hurt, yet by arresting these kids, we are potentially ruining the rest of their lives, over a natural phenomenon. Children aren't mentally developed enough to deal with their emotions properly. So, when they get agitated, they tend to fight in order to hammer out their hierarchy. Let them do it. It's pointless to make criminals out of kids for behavior they can't help.

I used to get in fights all the time when I was a kid. Do I still today? No. It's something kids need to get out of their system when their young and harmless. I could probably kill someone now if I were to get into a fight. But the worst I did when I was a kid was break a boy's cheekbone (he was a bully and deserved it -- and stopped being a bully after I punched him out, even though I was the one who got arrested & sued for it -- actually, my single mother got sued for it, by his cowardly father). What produces far worse results is when bullies go unchallenged and never learn their lesson.

Yeah, since the beginning of time there are been scraps between teens. However, what hasn't always happened were racial brawls that involved 30 teens. This is not boys will be boys, as you say. Context Walter, context.

Likewise, they can help it. It's called "self-control." Teens are not like hurricanes, they can control their destructive impulses.

These were High School students.

We are executing children and calling them adults for criminal acts committed as children.. We are giving 12 YO black male children, life in jail for crimes as children but ruling they are adults.

Your argument doesn't wash. If Antonin Scalia had his way, there would be a fuzzy line over childhood/adult definition under 12 years of age. Over 12 YO, any time. 12 YO's aren't in High School.

Hawaii is one of the most race.caste driven societies in the USA. Ask anyone who has moved and or lived there. Its part of isolated island life. Move to any Island and experience it.

You would never understand this concept, but maybe Pres. Obama and his empathy for others, came from growing up on Hawaii and being of mixed race. People who are discriminated against develop a special sensitivity and understanding of it. Ask any person of color. If you know any well enough to ask. But you and a lot here wear their racism as a badge of honor. Something that you know about and are proud of.
