A view of political desensitation: The DOJ says, well, we will investigate only this narrow angle of the presentation of "abnormal" torture in conjunction with how and who authorized "normal torture", related to what we feel needs investigated. They have to investigate because of treaties against torture. The uproar regarding partisan investigations begins, and then subsides. And then, revelations spark blinding flashes of the obvious and they reveal more they already knew and dig deeper.

Because this is a highly charged issue they have to desensitize the general public before letting more golden nuggets of truth out.

The more truth that comes out, the less overseas vacation trips these perps will take. Other countries are reportedly not as shy about enforcing treaties related to torture. Then, eventually maybe some of the actors and directors in this mess can take an extended paid trip with meals they don't have to pay for, or choose.

I'm wishing to see more truth in action.

I don't trust internal investigations. The FBI or independant investigators should investigate the DoJ, the DoJ should investigate the CIA, and the CIA should be deleted.

The problem at the DoJ is the incompetent, criminal, bobbleheads hired as career prosecutors by the Bush adminstration.

"A move to appoint a criminal prosecutor is certain to stir partisan bickering that could create a distraction to President Barack Obama's efforts to push ambitious health care and energy reform."

Could they possibly be anymore partisan than they already are?

No, there is nothing at all that the Republicans have not done, or can possibly do in the future, in their attempts to derail our legislative agenda. They have already been to Oklahoma city and done that too. We will survive and move forward regardless.

Do you mean more partisan bickering than there is now? Don't let health care be an excuse not to prosecute war crimes. We are sick and tired of excuses. We can't do this because that needs to be done is doing nothing. Do it and do it right for once.

The breatless "Will he or won't he/" reporting of this story is kind of unfortunate, because it makes what should be a question of law into a story about Holder. That does the rule of law no favors.

I'm sure Holder would say that when it's made the decision will be solely about the facts, the evidence, and the law. If there's enough evidence that a crime was committed, of course we'll prosecute. If not, we won't. This is neither a personal nor a political decision, nor should it be.."

I'll believe it when I see it. A lot of phony rumblings in the past and no follow-through. Torture, coupled with the Afghan POW slayings and this country's unwillingness to demand accountability from the Bush administration are not going to help American foreign relations that's for sure.

There won't be war crimes prosecutions of Bush or Cheney or the rest of the gang. Not here and not by any other country. If you think so, you're deeeeeloooshunUL.

Conspiracy is the key to this. Criminal conspiracy. Without that, there's nothing. The SOL is five years.

Tick tock.

This was investigated and reported by NEWSWEEK back in about 2003! The facts re: these deaths are horrible and should have precipitated an investigation way back then, but Republicans and the MSM were blocking ANY acknowledgement of what was going on!

Dammit! Laws HAVE been broken, human rights ignored, war crimes committed IN OUR NAME! I'm tired of hearing Obama equivocate about holding anyone in the past administration ACCOUNTABLE for breaking just about every law our nation is founded upon! ENOUGH!!!

If Obama continues to shut down, discourage, and stonewall justified Congressional and Justice Dept. investigations, he will lose my respect and support in 2012! His refusal to allow proper investigations is simply POLITICAL, an effort to get Repub votes on his agenda! Forget it! --- His open hand has been met with a FIST at every turn!

It's long past time to for all our "leaders" to put politics aside and FACE THE UGLY TRUTH about the past eight years!

That is how the right moves against Americans. They marginalize and "radicalize" them: "Us against them" ideology where Americans are the enemy.

That is why they need to be prosecuted, convicted, and imprisoned without sympathy or remorse. It is good for the country to separate criminals from society... That is why we have prisons in the first place.

What if Obama is not opposed to an investigation into Bush/Cheney but just wants to spend his political capital elsewhere? If Holder is seen as pushing the investigation while Obama is seen as the pragmatist who is above partisanship this is a win-win situation. The Republicans cannot attack Obama for failing to interfere with his Attorney General, meanwhile all of the darkest secrets of the previous administration get exposed over time. Finally once all the gory details are made public Obama, knowing that the Conservative majority on the supreme court would overturn any conviction pardons Bush and Cheney and scores yet more political points. Obama is the most sophisticated political operator we have seen in our lifetimes and I would not put a play like this past him.
