Taking from the poor to pay for tax cuts for the rich is unacceptable. Why then is taking from the poor to pay for tax cuts for the middle class? What is wrong with Obama? This is part of the republican war on The New Deal. Get over it guys. Its herre to stay. And dems - dont think that your recent victory is iron clad for future elections. If you abandon the core social programs that the poor and elderly need, there are many of us so-called bleeding heart liberals that will leave you at the alter in a heartbeat.

We stopped at a sandwich shop, and my mother asked if they had a sr. Citizen's discount. We used to laugh about it.

Yesterday, there was no laughter. I noted the urgency in her eyes about getting the discount.

And a happy ending. They could not work their register sufficiently so the owner just knocked five dollars off a fifteen dollar purchase.

But it concerned me that things were becoming so tight without the prospect of new income streams. Our seniors should not have to endure a hand to mouth existence.

Anything that has "chain" in it should not be applied to old people.

Stephen - you have been defending Obama all along. You and I have had several run-ins over what I claimed to be his tendency to make conservative choices in policy. I believe that Democrats are finally going to realize that Obama doesn't have a good grasp of economic and budget consideration WITH OR WITHOUT Republican opposition.

I believe the President is going to continue to cut at entitlements at every opportunity and will leave the US population significantly more vulnerable.

Democrats and Obama supporters will be lamenting this development -- they have themselves to blame for not standing up to the President and refusing to go along with this failed approach.

Democrats WISHED that they had stood up to Clinton on NAFTA over jobs
Democrats WISHED that they had stood up to Clinton on the repeal of the Glass Steagall Act

Obama is the President - he has been elected twice. Yet, he joins an entire generation of business, political, educational leaders across this nation who are dismantling a strong society from the inside out.

NO generation prior --left their children in worse shape --but the current generation has. The current generation doesn't have the money to retire even though everything was set up for them to retire comfortably -- they blew it.

We are living under the leadership of the BUBBLE generation and Obama has the same weaknesses and self delusion as his peers in leadership positions across the USA.

Somehow my points have not been sufficiently persuasive.
I got caught up in a religious controversy on another thread. Not sure how to respond to your concerns right away.
I must share that I do not blindly support our President. Just say in'.

All of what you have described is because we have no Labor Party in the US and Madison Avenue has deluded working class people with asinine "Cinderella" type fantasies. Decades ago, when the Berlin Wall was torn down, I saw a commentator on TV point out that Capitalism would be come ever more vicious and rapacious from then on, because there was no political movement on earth to balance it out. He was correct.

This chained CPI will further increase the gap between the rich and the non rich. It will make it much harder for the 70 million baby boomers to retire comfortably- most don't have enough to retire now. How is the shortfall supposed to be made up? Can you answer that question. That cost is going to be passed along to children -- who are inheriting a job market with fewer jobs and paying less to their employees.

The bottom is about to fall out - YOUR beloved President is undercutting the capacity of the USA to handle this huge coming crisis. You are aware Stephen that Social Security has NOTHING to do with the budget deficit --don't you. Why is Obama doing this?
10:19 AM on 12/19/2012
My...James-You are absolutely right. It is SAD and DISTURBING that the Chained CPI was PUT ON THE TABLE BY PRESIDENT OBAMA!! This is forcing seniors, the disabled, diabled vets and anyone else on SS to SUFFER for such a small gain to the economy. Current COLA does not keep up with increases food, healthcare, rent and transportation. A Chained CPI will just take money away from our ability to make ends meet quicker as it will not keep up enough income versus expenses. I paid into Social Security all my life. It is my money not an "entitlement". Will only save Gov't $100 billion in TEN YEARS!! They could get the same amount more quickly by cutting a small percentage of Defense Budget each year!

Mr. President, many voters stood in long lines here in Florida, many of them, though not all of them voted for you. They belieedthat social security along with medicare and medicaid would be protected under your adminisration.

If it sounds like a cut

looks like a cut

smells like a cut

Guess what Mr. President

Seniors citizens believe it is a cut.

How many of us have bothered to email, call, write or fax our Congressional members and also the president? It does absolutely no good to complain among ourselves - action is needed and that means letting the ones in power know what we think - and in no uncertain terms.

A waste of time, you say? It won't be if they are inundated with emails, calls, letters and faxes. Their staffs will call for some action when they are overwhelmed and this will get the attention of the higher-ups. I email regularly and even if I get no reply, it is worth the time. If we ALL take action, things might actually change in Washington. Don't depend on the AARP and other groups to do it for you - do it!!!!

So, it turns out that Joe Wilson, the despicable South Carolina Representative who called out "You lie." during Obama's State of the Union address a few years back, was right. It turns out that Barack Obama IS, after all, a bald faced liar, and that he's planned all along to help the Republicans sell America's old folks and the poor right down the proverbial river. It turns out that this president really is the fraud the crazy right has been saying he is, not for the reasons they've been serving up but, for much more meaningful and more deceitful reasons. Obama and the Dems have set out to help the Republicans cut desperately needed safety net benefits from those most in need. The Democratic Party's attack on Social Security and Medicare has begun.

Like the laughable Laffer Curve to sell Reaganomics, CPI is gops new gimmick to end cost of living adjustments for S.S. COLA's for S.S have been bare minimum anyway and this will eventually make the program look more like welfare for the poor.

The COLA has already been diminished once before and WE PAY TAXES ON OUR SOCIAL SECURITY, so the middle class has already paid more than its share. WE HAVE PAID and we have paid TWICE when it comes to Social Security which is taxed twice by the same entity, once when it was earned and again when it's received.

It is illegal to tax the same money twice, but somehow Reagan and Greenspan did it to pay for the decrease in taxes for the wealthy - from 70% to 28%, now at 35%. Decreased by half and paid for by the social security recipients in the largest transfer of wealth from the working class to the wealthy and ruling classes.

As of this year the amount put into S S over 40 working years equals the amount received over 20 years of retirement. STOP wringing the middle class, the working class, the seniors and passing the benefits to the wealthy and corporations.

Restore the 70% bracket ? How about 50% ? Not likely, since your representatives are in the 2%.
That's how it works.”

And the real lie that these politicians will not own up to is that Social Security has nothing to do with the deficit. The GOP simply does not like what they term entitlements, as if that were a dirty word. We who paid into this system all of our working lives are just as entitled to receive its benefits as those who had money to invest are entitled to their capital gains.

It's the interest on the money that is owed to the fund that adds to the deficit, but after borrowing the surplus and handing us a bunch of IOUs, they now do not want to pay the interest or at least offset it by making us pay again. Does it ever end ?
07:37 AM on 12/19/2012
Seniors have already been robbed by the FED and the banks on savings interest so we can hand it over to banks. Now they will shake seniors down for SS and next Medicare. How long before they want to just put us on an iceberg or a cold street.......all to pay the tithe demanded by the wealthy.
07:30 AM on 12/19/2012
Yes, let hurt the poor elderly with little life left, especially those with no family. After all, they are on a fixed income trying to get by with high medical bills, life threatening illnesses, and staggering food prices. After all, the 1% needs their life-long investments more than they do.

It seems like I receive a $25 cost-of-living raise about every three years after I paid into the system for over a half a century. Currently, Obama and the Republicans claim I am getting too much. I might just as well roll over and die.

SOCIAL SECURITY IS NOT BROKEN. It takes in more than it spends. Even if it became insolvent, it can easily be fixed by raising the income cap or applying it to "unearned" income. Plus, the government needs to repay the money it has been borrowing from the trust since 1983. Over 100 billion in interest at this point. http://articles.latimes.com/2010/aug/08/business/la-fi-hiltzik-20100808 Our leaders should be ashamed of themselves. ESPECIALLY the president. But he never has been a solid supporter of the middle class. He talks a good line. But he put Wall Street in charge of the treasury and he offered to cut social security during the deficit ceiling dog and pony show. AARP needs to stomp down on this HARD.

I thought the President campaigned on 'not cutting the deficit on the backs of seniors and the middle class...? Deficit reduction plans now include cuts to Social Security COLA's and cuts to health care programs...with $100b in cuts to military spending over 10 years. Hmmm.

Sure, he's asking for extended UI and some additional 'stimulus' spending (not sure what he'll actually get on those measures) - but these are short term solutions, will do nothing to close the income gap, and frankly will do nothing but increase the number of Americans living in poverty. I don't get it. Can somebody help me understand?

THE JOKE OF IT ALL: "but they have not ruled out voting for a broader budget deal that includes it. The change would save the government more than $100 billion in Social Security spending over 10 years, according to the Congressional Budget Office. "
WHO cares what it SAVES for the Govt....WE paid into it, it is not an entitlement. TODAY AMERICA fights two wars of choice. We just finished wiping Iraq off the map killing 655000 civilians never finding any WMD. WHY does not someone talk to the MIC about cutting down perpetual wars say from TWO TO ONE?
Today America has over 1000 permanent military bases world wide and Stock NUKES on many of these. Recently Japan said get your 8000 nukes off of Okinawa and take them further from us as we do not like the daily fear.
and last, both BUSH and Clinton started ill advised WARS and left the public with IOU's for their endeavors IN OUR SSI cash register.

There are few ways to cut expenses, and opting for cheaper food is one. If the SS check is reduced because of that and similar desperate choices, quality of life erodes even further for the oldest. If SS is going to be altered, it should skew towards increasing the monthly check of the poorest at the expense of those who are better off. Those who rely on that check for subsistence are in a different category from those for whom it's a nice supplement, but not critical to their survival.
08:21 AM on 12/19/2012
Let's say you worked your whole life and made sacrifices so you could save money to supplement SS when you retired so you could have a little bit better life in your old age and I didn't. Why should any of yours be mine?
