We need to pressure China and Vietnam to stop this. The demand is coming from them, and many if not most African nations are already doing all they can. I realize this will upset a lot of people, but the only thing, which will work is to have a policy that anyone caught selling, buying, or possessing a rhino horn gets executed or sentenced to life in prison for the first offense.

we tried pressuring vietnam one time if you remember, it didnt work.

Good God, they will never learn, I belong to many animal groups on Facebook. In China they now have a slaughterhouse for dogs and cats. And still they they strip the fur off of dogs while they are still alive and screaming. Don't get me wrong but there are many Chinese that are trying to stop this. AnimalsAsia is an amazing and very brave group of people. I'm not much for praying but I pray often for these people. Sometimes they say it's a losing battle but they will never give up...

Very disconcerting that humans are unable to see past the monumental greed that drives these senseless acts of barbarism. If we as a species are to survive, we must learn to coexist in peace and harmony with the other creatures who inhabit the planet with us.

Well said, ibnewshawk.

Stocks and pillaries for poachers seem fitting. Maybe that's too nice.

different levels of poaching. you cant compare this to shooting a deer with a rifle during muzzleloading season. just like you cant compare someone who verbally abused a child to someone who raped and murdered a child. what they are doing deserves a new word, poaching is too broad a term.

Peter Beard told us that our greed is going to catch the elephants first. We're super tool designers, but wonder if we're truly intelligent. We, as Beard writes, are pretending we are not destroying anything, and we ....his words...."One million humans are dumped onto the Earth every four days, we're pushing everything else off because we're putting ourselves first without any limitations."

They put Greed ahead of everything else, the ultimate sin. They will all pay the price for this when they die and I'm sorry but I don't feel sorry for them they have it coming.

This is why we need zoos. If it were not for zoos, animals such as these will be extinct in no time

While some zoos treat their captive animals well, many others provide inadequate living space and little to no enrichment/stimulation for the animals.

This is horrible. WE need so many more shooters over there because the poachers have such soulless shooters. They have killed so many of our pepole. I have a video that I could only watch once...Devils they are Devils.

"Mankind can destroy or save our planet..."

Human greed/arrogance is unstoppable, I'm afraid. Each life is so precious...they just don't understand.

"Mankind's true moral test, its fundamental test (which lies deeply buried from view), consists of its attitude towards those who are at its mercy: animals. And in this respect mankind has suffered a fundamental debacle, a debacle so fundamental that all others stem from it." ~ Milan Kundera

Yes, DrNeal, extinction for thousands. Any culture which becomes superficial is a dangerous one. Albert Schweitzer was enlightened in Africa decades ago, and warned all, we abandon affirmation and respect for life, and we undergo destructive changes.

The problem is they don't deal with poachers properly. Whenever a poacher is caught he should be given 30 minutes to plead his case before he is executed.

Sounds as though they have failed in their so called attempts at stopping poaching, 588 killed by poachers? Why don't they enact laws making it legal to shoot poachers on sight? These animals will soon be gone and all we'll have are pictures and videos of these wonderful creatures. All because the backward Chinese cannot move into modern times. I don't understand why the don't cut the horns off the Rhinos so as to prevent them being killed.

I agree that we need to kill poachers on sight, but poaching has evolved. They are using helicopters now and they are almost impossible to stop. They fly in, shoot the rhino or elephant with a dart to put him to sleep, swoop down and land, cut the horn off and jump back in their helicopter and fly off. There are no tracks, and they find them quickly. They can't even be bothered to kill them anymore to end their suffering. There's reports of some rhino's walking around for two days before they bleed to death.

These people are disgusting. I think every single rhino should have an armed team that does nothing but follow them. I don't really know what else would work?

They are doing that right now. Choppers and planes to spot them are in the air, when one is spotted they have to trank the these dear hearts that cause no trouble and bring them down, load them take them to a private place and remove the horns from the Rhinos and the Ele's.
Damn humans.....

If it prevents them being killed, then it is worth it. It is a shame though that we have to intervene to save these creatures in the first place. Humans are such foolish and superstitious creatures.

Lace these tusks and rhino horns with polonium and discretely release them back into the market. That would bring this problem under control.
12:18 PM on 12/27/2012
Paint the rino horns, and the elephant tusks with a pink paint that cannot be bleached out -- make their horns and tusks undesirable. Or cut them off by vets so there is very little to poach.

Until the importing countries make it illegal and hand out sever punishment, and vocally call for an end to it, it for sure will not stop.
