If only the lawmakers in THIS country would do something about the horrific abuse of animals! We MUST keep pressuring the lawmakers to make it a serious crime for abuse, neglect, or torture of something that doesn't have a voice! In NE Ohio alone, in the past couple of months, there were THREE abused, neglected, and tortured dogs rescued - one of these dogs was tied to a tree and shot twice, yet the perp. will just get a slap on the wrist and a now don;t do it again - this MUST change - we MUST be the voice of these poor animals!!!

You're right. People like you and me have to keep talking about it, pushing (if not harassing) our legislators, and supporting organizations that are already working on this. I'll keep pushing if you will.
08:58 PM on 12/31/2012
I am all for pushing legislation - I haven't stopped writing and complaining to the representatives, and I will keep writing, and calling until such action is taken against ALL animals abusers!!!

Abusy - You say one of the dogs was shot twice - did it survive?
08:57 PM on 12/31/2012
Yes the dog survived - but he limps and is still in the care of the vets. They removed the bullett and traced it back to the perp
10:45 AM on 12/31/2012
Having 4 lifetimes with dogs this is obvious behavior (non-cruelty toward any living creature). How can people be so blind? Sadly, I do know how, ignorance.

It does. But there's not too much meat production in Mexico City anyways.

Animal cruelty in this country is always defined by animals we adore. (e.g. cats, dogs, seals polar bears) But at the same time, we are highly hypocritical by not wanting to protect those natural to the environment. (e.g. coyotes, possums, wolves, black bears) Animal cruelty is animal cruelty wherever it might be found. Just do not speak out of both sides of the mouth. Remeber that free roaming cats are not indigenous to this country and are considered alien species. They are only behind habitat loss in the destruction of birds in this country. (They kill an estimated 3 billion plus birds each year.) Why protect them any more so that coyotes that are natural to our ecosystems??
10:33 AM on 12/31/2012
I brake (avoid) all animals. It is just the right thing to do when driving.

The article reads.......CAN and MAY. NOT WILL!
It's not good enough for these sick individuals.
They MUST be locked up! They are our FUTURE SERIAL KILLERS.
What is the problem..Do it already.

You can't say "will" when you're talking about law, because not all cases are punishable (i.e., the accused being innocent).

This is a great start!

...now where is the "most prosperous and civilized" country in the world at on this issue?

Oh yeah, lawmakers tend not to give $hi# about animals! ....let's keep them factory farms a'rollin'!

"Humans: the only animal that purposely tortures and abuses every species on the planet."

There is horrendous abuse on factory farms but the only law they made is to make it a crime to film it.

I am truly an animal lover and always have been one. While reading the article I kept thinking - these people can't even take care of the cartel that is there and can't stop their people from illegally entering another country so how can they stop animal abuse.

They don't want to stop their poeple from illegally leaving. they leave and send $$ back which boosts the economy. The cartels are also money makers and animals dodn't shoot back. So, if you are an animal, migrate to Mexico; if you are human, migrate to the US. If you are in the US - migrate to Canada.

What does Mexico City's (hundreds and hundreds of miles away from the nearest border) law have to do with immigration?

Also, drug related violence isn't a problem in Mexico City, which happens to have lower crime rates to D.C.

By the way, the only countries that stop people from leaving are considered dictatorships.

Animals are living creatures that feel pain. Their abuse and murder should be treated similarly to human abuse.

Great news! Let's see it happen in the U.S.

You are correct. While abusing animals is against the law too often the charges are nothing more then a misdemeanor. In some cases the abuse is so severe the the abusers are thrown in jail but as far as I'm concerned it does not happen enough. Dog fighing in most states is a felony and is punishable by jail tiime.

The laws are there. Its the enforcement that is lacking. Too many abusers get off easy with a fine and probation.

It's the key to almost all of our societal ills involving crime. Enforcement. The laws exist, now make them work. Too often the justice system allows a crime to be downgraded just to clear the docket while retaining a "win", thus appear on paper to be productive. When a violent assualt is plead down to disorderly conduct we just let a felon know he can get away with his violent mindset. It's the same whether we're talking about animal cruelty or violence against each other.

Way to step it up Mexico City lawmakers. This is long overdue!
03:14 AM on 12/31/2012
Its about time, now we need harsher punishments in the US.
12:52 AM on 12/31/2012
This is awesome! We need to have similar laws passed and implemented in the United States. For every person that starts a puppy mill and gets caught, they should be imprisoned for up to 10 years at a minimum.
