Considering Holmes is as sane as Breivik the taxpayer should not be stuck with a bill beyond a preliminary hearing, but as our way demands, all of the legal process must be adhered to before we lock up a person who is a danger to society. People that think they are the saviour or the joker did not get that way from video games, they were always there. Our failure as humans is the inability to recognize these people and keep weapons out of their hands. Gun control is not the answer as there are millions of guns both legal and illegal, and as there is no way to prevent criminals with violent records from obtaining them, the same holds for those that are unbalanced. The answer to those with mental problems has eluded humans since we realized this was among us and although approaches have been tried - nothing has worked.

Hell - If only the apartment managers had sprayed for bugs that week - Holmes would have to let them in, it would be suspicious not to.
A worker wouldve opened the door and seen the booby traps, thwarting the whole thing. Or they might have been blown up and that's terrible, but one dead maintenance worker would beat 12 dead and 58 wounded.

I bet there's lots of fishy things going on in apartments that would shock people.

why is the insignificant psycho still getting coverage? why isn't he in prison now? why is there such a big deal about his trial when there is no doubt who did what? relegate him to the dustbin of history...

There is something wrong with his face. It is grozen in a strange expression. he has been damagted as a baby-and child.
07:12 PM on 01/06/2013
I think it's an act. He has the same look in his eyes in every picture(booking, etc) Bottom line -- he did it, he got caught, convict him then kill him. Doctors are not going to learn anything by "studying" him.
07:43 PM on 01/06/2013
An act? This is a very ill man. He was obviously psychotic and not able to distinguish between reality and his delusions.
01:27 PM on 01/07/2013
Hi rwa 1949

Very good to hear your reply. People such as he have already been studied much but no one seems to know about it in the public. (Ghosts from the Nursery is one) It does look like an act doesn't it? However he had this look when very young. It is his brain. More and more of similar incidents will come to light of this kind in our society. The parents of these people hold the key. (physical, mental, sexual, verbal abuse) It is not likely this society will support killing this man or others like him. We can't stop it if we don't know what it is. The pain this man has caused is unbearable, unspeakable. I can understand just saying "kill him" and be done with it. However, there will be another one, and another...We have to be able to answer "What in God's name is this??"

I rarely get as angry at comments as I have at this thread. 1) He confessed. 2) He left proof that he was the shooter. 3) He had shot residue on his hands. 4) He is entitled to a trial by our very nation's laws, whether he confessed or not. 5) A jury will find him either guilty or not guilty by reason of insanity. 6) Either way, you never have to worry about him out on the streets again.

We don't often catch one of these spree-killers alive. Hopefully doctors can study him and learn something that will help prevent ones in the future.

That would be wonderful, but from whom would you choose to examine? My understanding is that Holmes bought all his weapons legally and had no criminal record. I don't think that any society can prevent murder.

I'm not sure I get your comment.  I wasn't referring to guns - not trying to open up that fight tonight.  I was merely suggesting having some highly qualified shrinks do whatever it takes to learn why he did what he did and what we can do to not make any more like him.

The anti-gun set wants to do a mental health evaluation on anyone who would be crazy enough to want to own a gun. This is not necessary to get the recent crop of shooters, Holmes and Loughner were both known to be mentally ill, Loughner by his school, the US military and the local police, Holmes at least by his school.

Why don't background checks include known mental health issues? Obviously it's part of the extreme "right to privacy" that we have for medical issues, no information can be released no matter what. Meanwhile we ignore the cameras, internet spying, spying on whatever you buy in stores, etc. that goes on in the rest of our lives. Maybe dangerous crazy people should be flagged before they shoot up a theater, political outing, mall, school, etc. This doesn't have to be put in the newspaper, just maybe try including it on the background check if they try to buy a gun. This is just an idea.

Concealed carry being the law in Colorado when all the evidence comes out ; will show that someone watching the movie was carrying a concealed weapon and just like the concealed carrier at the Gifford shooting in Tucson could do nothing to stop the shooter in Aurora , and possibly may have shot one or more of the victims during the terrifying ordeal .
02:44 PM on 01/06/2013
That would explain why they did not take the shot.
Just because you have the "means" to start shooting back ... doesn't always mean "can".

The NRA claims a good guy with a gun could and would have prevented this massacre. The truth is access to assault weapons enabled this sick killer to plan and carry out his sick mission .

Maybe, but the theater was had no guns allowed signs, the shooter bypassed other theaters on his way to this one. Having a gun is not perfect protection, and being responsible often means leaving it in it's holster. There are times it can save life's and often does.

The media will see nothing if he waives his right to a preliminary hearing resulting in none being held. His attorney may recommend it not take place.

'"Waive his right to hearing"

If so, what happens next - They go right to trial? Or would they schedule it for months down the road.

Sounds about right, this guy seems to enjoy dicking the system around. I thought we were gonna hear about another half-assed suicide attempt today, to put off the hearing tomorrow.
08:10 PM on 01/06/2013
Due to his "mental" condition, the case is more intricate than many know. If he waives the priminary exam, then it proceeds on to trial.
I would bet that there is a plea offer before that which keeps him locked up for life. It would eliminate the trauma of witnesses and surviving victims having to relive the trauma by testifying. Surviors and victims families could vent their emotions and anger by speaking at the sentencing. They have a right to address the lunatic and the court then, and hopefully, it would allow them to move on in the grief process.

We need a hefty surcharge on gun purchases, especially any favored by these mass murderers. After all, the cost of prosecution, jail time, and property damages is sugnificant..

When you look at all those in jail on gun offenses, it's a huge price we pay for our "freedom" to own guns. Each prisoner costs at least seventy thousand annually to incarcerate. Can we really afford that? Use funds to aid gun victims.
07:22 PM on 01/06/2013
Absolutely Right!!! We should also put a hefty surcharge on car sales and motorcycle sales. We need to help pay all those costs of ambulance and hospital stays. We should also ban all those "crotch rockets", there are so many other kinds of motorcycles, no one needs a motorcycle that can pull wheelies for blocks or go so fast. Insurance rates are too high now.
Yep - sounds like good logic too me.

I agree, lets find all the criminals, wackies, psycos and crazies and impose a tax on them.
Anyone arrested carrying a gun while commiting a crime should get mandatory jail and a hefty tax bill.
