As a serious amateur photographer, I though that last year’s photos were much better. However, the tigress was simply superb!

That motion, the water. Very unique. Very evocative.

Whether in captivity or in the wild these photos help bring awareness.

Thanks National Geo!

Harold Edgerton would have loved that photograph of the tiger..............
I think Ansel Adams would have loved the photo of the ice on the beach...................

I saw #7, the one of the fox with his legs straight up, on a Road Runner cartoon. Not very original.

I adore a great photograph. It was my dream to become a photographer but life got in the way. Now that our girls have moved out on their own perhaps it is my time to shine.............

You should got out and do it. I had been into photography when I was younger and single but after getting married and kids too many other things demanded my time. Now the kids are gone out on their own I bought a camera and rediscovered a passion from another life and it is thrilling to go out and take pictures all day even if I only get one good shot. Good luck and have fun!

I am soooo going to.
It has always been my first passion. I draw and I am pretty danged good at it, but there is something about catching a moment in time that just enthralls me and always has since I was in the 6th grade.
The things that I draw are of my own head ( not quite sure how to explain it ) but my true artistic eye see's REAL LIFE in a different way. Again...I'm not quite sure how to explain it, all i know is that I LOVE it !!

I have this one particular photograph that I took of my 2 daughters 8 years ago that I adore.
We were at the beach ( we live in San Diego, CA ) and it was a beeeeeautiful day.......I was laying on my back on my towel and had me girls lean over me and I took their pic. They were dripping wet, having just came out of the ocean and they had their arms around each other...it's a tight shot so you only see their beaming faces full of pure joy and innocense and from their shoulders up, Hard to ezplain a photo...eh?
Anyway.....it is so perfect, with the natural lighting and the water dripping off of their hair and so on and so forth.......it is definitely a moment caught in time.
Thank you again tva3.........I am SO going for it. :-)

The fox was funny. The person with mental illness was too sad.

As someone who can never find my camera when something special comes up I thank these intrepid photographers for being there at the right moment and with their camera. Now I can too enjoy the moment. They are pretty awesome.

"In all humility I have to say that Mother Nature smiled favorably on me that day," Vincent told National Geographic.

Umm... you took a picture of a tiger in a zoo and won 10 grand? Mother Nature? Not really. Yeah, big fail Nat Geo. There were hundreds of other pictures of WILD animals that were much more deserving of the grand prize. I challenge people to go and look at the other choices available (note, i did not have one and am not just a jaded loser) and compare it to this ZOO tiger. The cape buffalo with frogs on it, the wolf on the BC coastline, the grizzly bear nursing two cubs...all better, all wild.

The tigress was great I had too much trouble trying to get the rest to come up. The ones I did get seemed a bit ho hum except the fox in snow Takes time and effort to get animals at the exact right time.

This is so fantastic. i love the one where the women forage through the dump. It shows you how much filth there really is. But I think the mattertooth is my favorite and the the tigress picture. How beautiful these pictures are. I wanted to enter my own photos but unfortunately I was simply too busy with school and the holidays. Maybe next year, because, all my heart desires is to go on a student expedition but its so expensive!

What boggles the mind is upon learning that dogs and cats don't see in color, just different shades of gray (don't say it, don't even think it!)... And that must go for other mammals, bulls for one (anyone know if dolphins or whales may see in color?) it becomes easier to believe in God, or any god) because if these beautiful other animals can't appreciate their own color--WE CAN.

cats actually do see colors, and can tell the difference between red, yellow and blue lights as well as red and green ones.  they can distinguish between blues and violets better  than they can towards the red end of the color spectrum.  eagles are known to have color vision much like ours, only their vision is about four times sharper than a human with perfect vision.  most birds can see in color.   dogs are thought to be able to detect color in the same manner that a human who suffers from red-green color blindness does, and they aren't that sensitive to shades of grey.   dolphins have quite sharp vision both in and out of the water, but they seem to respond primarily to colors in the blue spectrum, which makes sense considering their surroundings.....

but i do totally agree with you, we can certainly appreciate their magnificent colors.  i don't know if you saw the four part nat geo series in which a photographer and a biologist set out to "catalog" all the world's species of birds of paradise, but if you can find it, it's well worth it.   the colors of those birds are just not to be believed!  it took those two guys ten years to get all of them, but they did it!

Will definitely check on those birds of paradise, but where did you get the information about the kittens etc? I'd love to be able to prove someone I know wrong about this!

My first thought was that maybe not too many people must have entered. The "Matterhorn" sort of has that Ansel Adams look about it and I would give that honorable mention...I wasn't really overly impressed with any of them and expected much better from a NG photo contest..

Really? Look again-the "Scavengers"? "East of Iceland"? Stunning, but...that's just me...
